Recycling on Track for 400-Ton Quarter

Treasurer’s Report--Robert Ford reported the amount in the account for Amy.
Minutes – Distributed for review.

OLD BUSINESS
Financial Review (Audit)--Glenda DeShazo performed a detailed review of the cash transactions for ARC as of March 31, 2005. The review included vouching disbursements, verifying deposits, reviewing classifications, and verifying beginning and ending balances. Based upon the limited procedures performed, Glenda reported that the records appear to be in order, with all revenue and expenditures being accounted for in the financial statements. Glenda also stated that Amy Ford has been an efficient Treasurer for ARC and commended her dedication in performing the duties of her office. Glenda also gave officers a list of findings and recommendations. Phil Kaiser made a motion to accept the review, Betty Parham seconded the motion, and it was approved unanimously. Members thanked Glenda for her time and expertise.

Annual Report--Garmon Smith is to complete a Message from the Chairman before the report can be sent out requesting annual dues.

Membership Drive--Photos of 2005/2006 Business Partners will be scheduled during noon meetings after dues are collected.

Wal-Mart Grant--No update.

NEW BUSINESS
Transfer Station--The City Council approved to select an engineering firm for the design and analysis for a transfer station.

City of Ada Recycling Report--Stan Fullingim, Recycling Coordinator, reported the following:
1. Recycling is on track for a 400-ton quarter.
2. There has been a drop in cardboard collection recently.
3. There are currently two types of paper being recycled: Newspaper and all other.
4. An Electronic Billboard would be effective at the new recycling center on 12th Street.
5. Once the new Recycling Center is completed, an additional trailer will be available, and another location will need to be determined.

Wednesday, March 9
ARC Prepares for Annual Meeting
Garmon Smith, Chair, called the meeting to order at 12:15 pm.

Treasurer’s Report – Treasurer Amy Ford reported the current balance upcoming expenses.

Minutes – Keith Wilkerson made a motion, seconded by Amy Ford, that the minutes be accepted as printed. The motion passed.

OLD BUSINESS

Wal-Mart Grant Request – No report.

Annual Meeting -- Details discussed, including: a. Amy Ford reported a problem with students not cashing their checks for a long period of time after receiving them. Jim Miller made a motion, seconded by Joe Braly, that cash be given to this year's recipients. The motion passed. b. Earth Day Proclamation--Mayor Nemecek is scheduled to make a presentation at 12:30. c. Garmon Smith will contact John Cartwright with Linn Paper to invite him to the meeting. d. Slate-of-Officers and Board Members--No action taken.

NEW BUSINESS

Annual Report – Dr. Phil Kaiser presented an outline of the annual report for business partners. He will be contact other members who have worked on various committees this last year to help him complete the report before the Annual Meeting.

City of Ada Recycling Report – Stan Fullingim updated members on the progress of the new recycling building on 12th Street. There seems to be a problem with the recycling bins not being as visible on the south side of 12th Street. Also, a baler is down which may cause the number of bales shipped to be less until the baler is repaired.

Water Festival/Earth Day Fair--Dr. Doug Weirick has volunteered to represent ARC and set up a booth at the Festival on April 21, 2005 at East Central University.

DISCUSSIONS – Following a discussion on E-Waste, Dr. Joe Braly volunteered to contact Roger Cupps at Staples to see if Staples might make a program available to Ada similar to the one Office Depot has conducted in the past in Oklahoma City to collect monitors and other computer equipment at no cost to the public. It was announced that Ada Scrap Works (formerly Ada Iron and Metal) will buy CPU's, but not monitors. Also, the Chickasaw Nation will pick up all types of computer equipment at no charge.

Annual Meeting Scheduled

OLD BUSINESS
1. Telephone Book Collection Contest – Trudy Nevland made a motion that Phil Kaiser follow up with getting a recycling information message on SBC’s 800 number. Barbara Young second the motion, and it passed unanimously. Phil agreed to handle this project.

2. Wal-Mart Grant Request – Barbara Young volunteered to follow up.

3. Annual Meeting
a. Scheduled for Wednesday, April 20th – 11:30 to 1 pm at the Elks Lodge.
b. Ellen Bussert to schedule speaker from Weyerhaeuser.
c. Betty Parham made a motion that ARC purchase 60 Earth Day T-shirts with ARC logo on the sleeve. Russ Lacen seconded the motion, and it passed unanimously. Trudy Nevland will place order. T-shirts will be given out at the annual meeting!
d. Essay Contest – Members agreed to conduct another contest for area high school students (9th thru 12th) to celebrate Earth Day. The title is: “How to convince someone to Recycle.” First place will be awarded $100, lunch and a T-shirt. Two runners-up will receive $50, lunch and T-shirts.

NEW BUSINESS

Annual Report – Phil Kaiser agreed to prepare an annual report for business partners.

City of Ada Recycling Report – Stan Fullingim updated members on the progress of the new recycling building on 12th Street. Construction is underway, and the recycling bins have been temporarily moved to the south side in the parking lot.

DISCUSSIONS – Expanding recycling outside city limits was discussed. Garmon Smith is to check on cardboard recycling in Fittstown.

Linn Paper Stock Donates $2500 to ARC
Garmon Smith, Chair, called the meeting to order at 12:07 pm.

BUSINESS
New Membership Drive – The following was discussed:
1. Garmon Smith reported 35 paid members, which included nine Business Partners, three Organization Sponsors and nine Leaders. Newest Business Partners include TINCDC and Southern Oklahoma Urology.
2. Garmon Smith reported that three Business Partner and four Organization Sponsor presentations of appreciation will be scheduled soon and asked members to assist with that.
3. Gift Certificates – Presenting gift certificates to building maintenance or custodial employees responsible for collecting recyclables was tabled for future discussion. Amy Ford, Dr. Braly and Dana Nickell volunteered to head up a committee to make recommendations.

America Recycles Day
1. Garmon reviewed ARC’s upcoming events for ARD, as follows:
a. Mulching mower giveaway (pledge card drawing)
b. Essay contest for area High School and Jr. High School students, as follows:
   1st Place for High School and Jr. High School winners – $100 each and two runners-up at each level will be awarded $50 each.
Topic: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle – “Ways to Reuse Items that are Too Often Thrown Away”
c. Poster contest for area elementary students (Grades 1-6) as follows:
   Six (6) $25 prizes will be awarded to the winner in each grade.
   Posters will be judged on originality, style and message.
   Teachers are to submit their top three posters.
   Posters must be submitted by 5 pm Monday, November 1, 2004.
   Posters are to be no larger than 8½ X 11 inches.

Members had an idea to host a contest for area students to design boxes for pledge cards. Stan suggested he could donate several small buckets that could be used to collect pledge cards this year.

Wal-Mart Grant Request – No further information at this time.

CITY OF ADA RECYCLING REPORT – Stan Fullingim, Recycling Coordinator, reported that the recycling center was averaging 36 tons per week (30 bales). And, because of the market change, they may begin separating newsprint from other paper products in the near future.

GUEST SPEAKER – John Cartwright with Linn Stock Paper in Pryor Oklahoma presented ARC with a donation of $2500 by commending the City of Ada and ARC for all the achievements made regarding recycling, especially compared to other cities of this size. He also updated members on current recycling conditions. He said that 2004 has been a very strong year for recycling with stable and mostly high-end pricing and that corrugated paper has not fluctuated much at all. Paper mills are running well mostly because China is buying recycled material at a steady pace; keeping prices up. Mr. Cartwright explained that the two types of plastics accepted in Ada (PET #1 soda jugs) and (HDPE #2 milk jugs) are two very different products and are recycled at two different types of mills. Companies use No. 1 plastics to manufacture carpets and No. 2 plastics are used to make items such as railroad ties.

ANNOUCNEMENTS

Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day – David Hendricks reported that the city would be holding its next event in October (tentatively October 30) in the ECU football stadium parking lot again this year. ARC’s committee to collect latex paint for reuse is: Robert Ford, Frank Beck and Phil Kaiser.

Print Cartridges – Marie Wilson asked members for their used print cartridges for Hayes School.

The Chickasaw Nation – Dana Nickell, Site Coordinator, looks forward to working with ARC in the near future.

Shredded Paper – Jim Miller reported that a bin for shredded paper only was added to the 12th Street recycling center.

ARC Prepares for America Recycles Day

BUSINESS
New Membership Drive – The following was discussed:
1. Trudy Nevland reported 31 paid members, which included six Business Partners, two Organization Sponsors and nine Leaders.
2. Garmon Smith reported four plaque presentations of appreciation were made: Credit Bureau of Ada, Flex-N-Gate, McDonald’s of Ada and Valley View Hospital.
3. Gift Certificates--Giving gift certificates to building maintenance or custodial employees responsible for collecting recyclables was tabled for future discussion and input from Russ Lacen.
4. ARC has obtained two new business partners, Ada Evening News and the Ada Wal-Mart. All sponsors have been added to ARC’s website and will be presented with plaques.
5. Donation. Linn Stock Paper sent notice that they are mailing a donation to ARC for approximately $2000.

America Recycles Day

1. Members agreed to give away its annual mulching mower by hosting a pledge card drawing in November.
2. Members agreed to conduct an essay contest for area High School and Jr. High School students, as follows:
a. 1st Place for High School and Jr. High School winners – $100 each
b. Two runners-up at each level will be awarded $50 each

Wal-Mart Grant Request – ARC is sending a request to Wal-Mart, signed by Garmon Smith and Barbara Young, for a $1000 grant.

Manning the 12th Street Recycling Center – Phil Kaiser reported that he distributed brochures and information on Saturday, July 17 from 10:30 am to noon on 12th Street with positive results.

Del Computer Grant – Garmon Smith reported that Kelly Hurt applied for another Del Computer Grant for ARC.

CITY OF ADA RECYCLING REPORT – Stan Fullingim, Recycling Coordinator, gave kudos to Dave Jones for helping to increase cardboard recycling by two bales per week. He also reported that the new recycling drop-off locations were doing well; however, the trailer at North Hills Centre was slower than the others.

DISCUSSIONS

Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day--Upcoming paint collection this fall--Reminder.

Rotary Club--Garmon Smith will contact Barbara Wilson to arrange a date to speak to Rotary and present them with a certificate.

TINCDC--Dr. Joe L. Braly, President, Tri-County (a potential Business Partner) volunteered to promote recycling and distribute brochures to banks and the Chamber of Commerce.

Staples--Barbara Young volunteered to speak with Roger Cupps about becoming a Business Partner and possibly donating printing to ARC for more brochures.

Sounding Board--Garmon Smith agreed to write a Letter to the Editor responding to the recent article in the Sounding Board regarding plastic and shredded paper recycling.

Wednesday, July 14
Bussert Offers Free Recycling Walk-Thru Audits
Garmon Smith, Chair, called the meeting to order at 12:10 pm on July 14, 2004.

OLD BUSINESS

Linn Stock Paper Proposal – Garmon Smith reported that he has not had time to pursue a sponsor for this offer and may seek assistance from Phil Kaiser, as offered.

New Membership Drive – The following was discussed:

1. Trudy Nevland reported 22 paid members, which includes three Business Partners and five Leaders.

2. Betty Parham made a motion that ARC purchase acrylic plaques for current Business Partners. Ellen Bussert seconded the motion, and it passed unanimously. Ellen Bussert will pick up the plaques, and Trudy will make the certificate inserts. Amy Ford volunteered to pursue making future plaques out of pallets or other recycled material.

3. Presenting gift certificates to building maintenance employees responsible for collecting recyclables at ARC’s Business Partner locations was tabled for future discussion.

4. Recycling Audit Walk-Thru -- Ellen Bussert volunteered her time and expertise to Buisness Partners to make recycling work more efficiently and productively.

5. Phil Kaiser plans to man the 12th Street Recycling Center on Saturday, July 17 to distribute applications for membership.

NEW BUSINESS

America Recycles Day -- Ellen Bussert volunteered to man a recycling center to distribute pledge cards in November. ARD activities for 2004 and/or a mulching mower giveaway were tabled until the next meeting.

Dell Grant Proposal Request -- Garmon Smith is to contact Kelly Hurt about pursuing a grant for e-waste recycling.

CITY OF ADA RECYCLING REPORT -- Stan Fullingim, Recycling Coordinator, reported the City of Ada increased their recycling for fiscal year 2003/2004 40.5 percent. The Recycling Department is currently baling approximately 365 tons per quarter, and now has five recycling drop-off centers located and doing well throughout Ada.

Call to Order – Once everyone went through the buffet line and was seated, Garmon Smith, Chair, called the meeting to order at 12:05 pm. Garmon introduced several people in attendance, including Mayor Darrell Nemecek, Vice Mayor Donna York and City Council member
Barbara Young.

2003 Annual Minutes – Last year’s minutes were distributed for review.
Treasurer’s Report – Amy Bryce, Treasurer, reported the approximate amount in ARC's account. Marie Wilson made a motion to accept the report as presented. Gisele Gee seconded the motion, and it passed unanimously.

ARC Update & Review – Garmon Smith reported on several ARC events and accomplishments over the past year, including: participating in the city’s household hazardous waste collection event by collecting and mixed paint, conducting the annual mulching mower give-away for America Recycles Day, conducting another telephone book collection contest and sponsoring a recycling essay contest for area students. He also stated that ARC was very appreciative and encouraged by the City’s recycling accomplishments and goals.

Installation of Officers and Board Members – 2004/2005 – The following slate-of-officers and board members was presented:

Officers: Garmon Smith (Chair) Doug Weirick (Vice Chair) Trudy Nevland (Secretary) and Amy Bryce (Treasurer)
Board Members: Frank Beck, Ellen Bussert, Robert Ford, Gisele Gee, Phil Kaiser, Betty Parham, Barbara Wilson and Marie Wilson.

John Wilson made a motion to accept the above slate as presented. Amy Bryce seconded the motion, and the motion passed.

ESSAY CONTEST – Betty Parham presented certificates, checks and T-shirts to essay contest winners. The essays were entitled: “What are the long-term benefits of Recycling.” First place and $100 was presented to Kayli Edwards. Two honorable mentions, Beth Nevland and Kathryn Hamby were presented with $50.

EARTH DAY PROCLAMATION – Mayor Darrell Nemecek read and presented an Earth Day proclamation declaring April 22 “Earth Day” in Ada.

EARTH DAY ACTIVITIES AT ECU – Doug Weirick described some of the activities that would be taking place at ECU for Earth Day, including contests sponsored by ARC.

City of Ada Recycling Update – Stan Fullingim, City of Ada Recycling Coordinator, reported the following:

1.        The city’s recycling goals are to increase the life of the landfill and provide the public with an environmentally responsible means to dispose of recyclable solid waste.
2.        The city collects, processes and markets about 30 tons of material per week (about 10 percent of the total solid waste collected).

GUEST SPEAKER
John Cartwright, Linn Stock Paper – Mr. Cartwright discussed marketing recyclable products, the demand for paper for recycling and the end products. He stressed the importance of material quality, bale integrity, shipment consistency, relationship with the consuming mill and knowledge of current markets. He also commended ARC, the city of Ada and its citizens for their recycling efforts. He said that Ada was doing a phenomenal job of recycling; especially for a city of its size.

ADJOURNMENT

Garmon Smith adjourned the meeting at 1:05 pm after reminding everyone that ARC meets the second Wednesday of each month at the City Hall Annex Conference Room at noon.

ARC to Collect Latex Paint at City's Upcoming HHW Event
Garmon Smith, Chair, called the meeting to order at 12:15 pm.
Treasurer’s Report – Amy Ford reported the amount in the account (after depositing a donation).
Minutes – Garmon Smith distributed the minutes from the last meeting for review.

BUSINESS
Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event
Doug Weirick reported the following:
1.        When: Saturday, October 25, 2003 – 9 am to 2 pm
2.        Where: ECU Norris Field Parking Lot
3.        ECU students and Dr. Sewell are working on T-shirts for the event. The design is finalized and they will begin working on finding sponsors for the T-shirts and food.
4.        ECU will supply at least one tent. Rosedale Cemetery will supply another one.
5.        Sanner Pipe in Velma, Oklahoma may be interested in collecting white goods during the event. David Hendricks agreed to contact them to discuss the possibility.

Trudy Nevland distributed flyers for the HHW event and encouraged members to post them where ever they could and to send e-mail notifications. She also reported the following for Robert Ford regarding paint collection, in his absence:

1.        Twelve to 15 5-gallon buckets are needed – Members agreed to supply.
2.        The following list of supplies will be needed for the event:

        a.        duct Tape                        d.        tent
        b.        tables with coverings                e.        buckets
        c.        floor covering

3.        Robert Ford contacted Habitat for Humanity and the ECU Art Department with regard to accepting the paint collected at the event. He also asked each for event assistance, but has not heard back from either organization at this time.

David Hendricks reported that the process to obtain a vendor is underway. He also reported that he thought the city was considering making this an annual event.

Garmon Smith agreed to seek information regarding e-waste collection at the event.

City of Ada Recycling Report
Stan Fullingim reported that the recycling department was baling approximately 40 bales per week, and that his goal was 55 bales per week. Stan asked for assistance with a recycling design for containers, and Doug Weirick agreed to check with ECU students.

America Recycles Day – November 15, 2003
Trudy Nevland announced that Michael Patton would be dropping off pledge cards for ARC to distribute again this year. Members also agreed that ARC should sponsor some sort of event to celebrate.

ANNOUNCEMENTS
Cardboard – Frank Beck volunteered to write a Letter to the Editor regarding the importance of recycling cardboard and to encourage residents to recycle.

Newspaper – Stan Fullingim reported that the price of newspaper has increased significantly and is worth almost as much as cardboard.

Recycling Drop-Off Center to Open at Wal-Mart
Garmon Smith, Chair, called the meeting to order at 12:13 pm.
Treasurer’s Report – None
Minutes – Trudy Nevland, Secretary, distributed the minutes from the last meeting for review.

BUSINESS

Essay Contest – Trudy Nevland reported that the deadline for the Earth Day essay contest was April 1, 2003 at 5 pm. She encouraged members to promote the event. Three $50 savings bonds will be awarded to three high school students.

Annual Meeting – Garmon Smith reminded members that ARC’s annual meeting will be held Wednesday, April 23, 2003 from 11:30 am to 1 pm at the Elks Lodge. The guest speaker will be Scott Christianson, USGS Hydrologist. His topic will be the Norman Landfill Environmental Research Site: “What Happens to the Waste in Landfills?" The cost for the meal will be $8.50.

Flex-N-Gate – Employees, looking for ways to increase recycling at Flex-N-Gate, asked for assistance to recycle office paper.

ARC’s Proposal to City Council – Members reviewed the final draft of the proposal to be presented to City Council.

Metal (White Goods) Recycling – Jim Herndon raised the problem of white goods and scrap metal being placed in the landfill and not being recycled. This issue was discussed, and it was noted that two mills in the Oklahoma area went bankrupt; making it very difficult to recycle metal. Members suggested the city begin collecting metal until there is a place to transport it. Members agreed there is a problem and there does not seem to be a short-term solution to it.

City of Ada Recycling Report

Stan Fullingim reported that the recycling trailers will be set in the northwest parking lot at Wal-Mart on Monday, March 17, 2003. Cardboard will not be accepted at this location.
A near record-breaking 38 bales of recyclables were recently baled in one week’s time.

Telephone Book Collection Contest – Garmon Smith reported that six schools participated in the contest. Roff Elementary was the top collector with 1,549 books, Latta was second with 1,294 and Hayes Elementary was third with 710 books. The total amount of phone books collected was 4,209.

Proposal to City Council – Garmon Smith reviewed the “draft” proposal with members. In addition to asking for two additional recycling employees and additional containers, the proposal included future goals of setting an annual household hazardous waste collection day, expanding recyclables to white goods, computers and electronic waste, adding a household hazardous waste repository and eliminating cardboard from the waste stream.

Recycling Grants – Barbara Young reported that Wal-Mart had no money to offer for environmental grants at this time, but that she would check back at mid year. Garmon Smith agreed to send a letter to Governor Anoatubby requesting a partnership to recycle cardboard and paper and to request a grant from the Chickasaw Nation.

City of Ada Recycling Report – Stan Fullingim distributed an Ada Recycling Program Fact Sheet.

Annual Meeting – Members agreed to host the annual meeting at the Elks Lodge on Wednesday, April 23. Trudy Nevland reported that the cost of lunch would be $8.50 and that the speaker would be Scott Christianson with the USGS.

BUSINESS

Essay Contest – Trudy Nevland reported that the three winners were sent certificates and bonds and that the first-place winner, Miranda Ellis, did have her picture published in the Ada Evening News.

Telephone Book Collection Contest – Garmon Smith, Frank Beck and Phil Kaiser volunteered to accept the phone books from the participating schools on Saturday, January 11, 2003 at the Recycling Center from 9 am to noon. Hayes School will deliver phone books on the Friday before.

Proposal to City Council – Garmon Smith reported that he would try to have the proposal ready for council by February 1, 2003. This is the date requested by David Hendricks. Barbara Young and Frank Beck volunteered to assist.

Recycling Grant(s) – Barbara Young reported that she had contacted Wal-Mart (Dale) regarding paperwork for a grant, but was told that Wal-Mart’s new year begins in February. Barbara agreed to try again next month.

City of Ada Report – None

Chickasaw Nation Recycling Update – Garmon Smith reported that he had spoken with Dewayne Laxton and that his call was well received.   Mr. Laxton agreed to investigate the recycling situation with the Chickasaw Nation.

Annual Meeting – Tim Hensley agreed to invite Scott Christianson?, U.S.G.S. to speak at our annual meeting in April. If Mr. Gr. Is not available, Doug Weirick said he could invite Gary Sewell, with ECU, to speak. Members agreed that another essay contest is a good idea and that the topic and awards would be discussed at the next meeting.

DISCUSSIONS – Members discussed the importance of recycling and the need to ban cardboard from the waste stream.

Monthly Meeting -- December
Garmon Smith, Chair, called the meeting to order at 12:10 pm. Treasurer’s Report – Amy Bryce, Treasurer, reported no change inthe account. Minutes – Trudy Nevland, Secretary, distributed the minutes from the last meeting for review and reminded members that they were posted on the website.

Essay Contest – “How Can I Encourage More Citizens to Recycle in Ada?” – The first-place winning essayist, Miranda Ellis (Ada) will be sent a $100 savings bond and the two runners up, Kyle Colon (Latta) and Kristin Brimm (Vanoss) will be sent a $50 savings bond each. An announcement will be sent to the newspaper.

DISCUSSIONS -- Garmon Smith agreed to call Dewayne Langston with the Chickasaw Nation to encourage paper and cardboard recycling.

ANNOUNCEMENTS -- Glass Recycling -- Glass is accepted at the Target Store (on Main) and at the Homeland store (on Lindsay) in Norman.

BUSINESS

Proposal to City Council – Garmon Smith reported that he has not had time to work on the proposal. City Council Member, Sid Bearden, requested that ARC present it to the council in time for consideration in next year’s budget. Members agreed that the proposal must include a request for a Household Hazardous Waste Collection event. It was also suggested that the city pool participation with neighboring communities or for ARC to ask for donations for the event.

Recycling Grant(s) – Garmon Smith – No progress at this time.
City of Ada Report – Stan Fullingim reported the following:
300 tons of recyclables were collected last quarter (tripled since last year).
45 days were saved at the landfill over the last three years. This amount is expected to increase, as recycling is increasing.
Trailers are to be set at Wal-Mart this year.
Commercial paper recycling continues to increase significantly.

Weekly Recycling Report – Members commented on their appreciation for the work Mark Bratcher has done in getting a recycling report in the Ada Evening News.

Telephone Book Collection Contest – Members agreed to sponsor a telephone book contest for area schools. ARC will treat three classrooms that turn in the most phone books to a pizza party.

Recycling... "It's the right thing to do!"
Garmon Smith, Chair, called the meeting to order at 12:18 pm.

Treasurer’s Report – Amy Bryce reported the amount in the account.

Minutes – The minutes from February 13, 2002 were distributed for review.

BUSINESS

1. Annual Meeting / Earth Day – Final Preparations -- Trudy Nevland reported the following:

ARC’s annual meeting will be Tuesday, April 16 at the Elks Lodge from 11:30 am to 1 pm. The guest speaker will be Michael Patton with the Tulsa M.E.T. The cost is $7.50 for a buffet meal and there will be 50 Earth Day T-shirts available for guests. Our 2001 Earth Day T-shirts will be available for door prizes or purchase. Trudy will promote the meeting thru the news media, e-mails, etc.

2. Proposal to City Council – N/A

3. Recycling Grant(s) – N/A

4. Electronic Recycling Research – Garmon stressed the importance of keeping electronics, including computer and television parts out of the landfill due to the high lead content. Stan Fullingim agreed to supply recycling information on this topic if available.

5. Ideas to get students to look at ARC’s web site – Doug Weirick announced that he had a new web site for his students and that he would link us to it. His new web address is: www.ecok.edu/~dweir .

NEW BUSINESS

1. Essay Contest – Garmon Smith announced that an essay contest was suggested. Betty Parham made a motion to sponsor an essay contest for 5th grade through high school students, and Doug Weirick seconded the motion; the motion passed. The following are the details decided upon:

a. Trudy Nevland would promote the contest through the news media, e-mails, etc.

b. The contest would be divided among three categories: 5th and 6th, Jr. High and High School.

c. Savings bonds would be awarded to the winners, as follows: $100 savings bond for the winner in each age category and two $50 savings bonds for the runners up in each age category.

d. The essay theme is: “How Does Recycling Benefit My Community.”

e. Electronic submissions will be accepted and typewritten essays are preferred.

f. The deadline to submit essays is Thursday, April 11 and they are to be submitted to Trudy.

g. Trudy will number each essay so the names are not known to the judges.

h. The committee volunteers (judges) are: Betty Parham, Barbara Wilson and Doug Weirick.

i. We hope to announce the winners at the annual meeting (winners will be invited).

j. The essays will be placed on the web site.

City of Ada Recycling -- Stan Fullingim, Recycling Coordinator, reported the following:

a. The city continues to bail 20-25 bales per week.
b. The Chickasaw Nation has increased their recycling of paper and cardboard.
c. The new satellite trailers are finished, but need labeling.
d. A theme is needed for the promotion; members liked:

Ada Recycling Coaliltion -- Minutes
Garmon Smith, Chair, called the meeting to order at 12:06 pm.
Treasurer's Report was given
Minutes for September 13 were distributed.

OLD BUSINESS
1. Proposal to City Council -- Robert Ford reported that he had completed the first draft, which included traffic counts at the recycling center.
2. Recycling Grants -- Robert Ford reported that Amy Bryce is working on them.

NEW BUSINESS
1. America Recycles Day (11/15) -- Trudy Nevland distributed pledge cards to members for distribution and asked that they be returned at the next meeting in order to be sent off in time for the state and national drawings.
2. Telephone Book Recycling Contest -- Trudy Nevland reported that she was able to send out flyers to schools and to the media to promote the contest. A date for the collection is still to be announced.
3. ECU Student Pilot Recycling Program -- Doug Weirick reported that several members of ECU's Environmental Science Club were interested in initiating a temporary curbside recycling program. Garmon Smith made a motion that ARC pay for the instructional brochure printing cost of $100 or less. Robert Ford seconded the motion, and it passed.

REPORTS
Stan Fullingim, City Recycling Coordinator, reported that he continues to average 12 bales of cardboard per week, with an 18- to 22-bale average of total recyclables.

DISCUSSION
There was discussion regarding the need for the city to pursue a regular environmental or recycling column in the Ada Evening News. Members agreed that education is of the utmost importance when it comes to recycling.
