COACHING:
Jon Wyse is an experienced and well respected coach, and player, in British American FOOTball. He has been a member of the British American FOOTball Coaches' Association (BAFCA) since 1994, and has presented at numerous BAFCA Conventions and workshop clinics.
He began his coaching career in 1992 with the Staffordshire Stallions (BCAFL), progressing from assistant coach, to Offensive Coordinator, to being Head Coach from 1995-98. He was also Head Coach of the Staffordshire Surge (BAFL) from 1997-98. He was the Assistant Head Coach at the Plymouth Blitz (BCAFL) from 2000-2003, and also at the Colchester Gladiators (BAFL) in 2005. He also served on the coaching staff at the Plymouth Admirals (BAFL) from 2001-2002.
Jon Wyse has been a coach for the Great Britain Bulldogs, the National Student team, from 1998-2003. At the Great Britain Bulldogs, he coached Wide Receivers before moving onto coordinating the Special Teams and working as the Mental Skills Coach.
He has worked alongside a number of Senior, Collegiate and Youth teams, helping them with their mental preparation and focusing on being “right here, right now”. This resulted in an impressive 10 - 1 record in the games immediately following his talks !
One of his most cherished achievements was being asked in 2007 to assist the Woodham Warriors during the NFL Flag FOOTball World Championships in New Orleans. The Warriors (from Newton Aycliffe, County Durham) finished a creditable 7th place IN THE WORLD, and Wyse continues to help the team to develop as they progress into the kitted game of American FOOTball.
Currently he is BAFCA Director of Coach Education, and is currently involved in writing the Coach Education and Qualifications Programme. He has also been involved with the EFAF Coaching Development Team. He is also a Director of the British American Football Association (BAFA), the national governing body for American Football in Great Britain.
However, perhaps his finest hour as a "Mental Coach" to date, was in helping the PA Knights (now the Farnham Knights) becoming BritBowl XVIII National Champions in 2004, facilitating "KNIGHT-TIME" and assisting both the Knights' players and coaches to enhance their use of mental skills.
PLAYING:
The Britbowl 2004 victory was also a playing highlight for Jon Wyse, being named the Championship Game’s Most Valuable Player for his play on special teams and defense, and a dazzling 50 yard interception return ! (see http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=f4hDE198e0g )
As a player, Wyse has a reputation as a consistently excellent, intelligent and mentally tough performer. Always “ready to go”, he is perhaps one of the country’s most versatile players. He represented the Great Britain Lions in 1997 as a Defensive Back and Kicker, and has more recently made the 2007/08 squad as a Wide Receiver. He has also been a Punter, Kick/Punt Returner and Running Back for most of his club teams. Additionally, as a Quarterback Wyse was a dominant player in the BCAFL. He was voted the League’s first ever season MVP, twice being nominated All-College at QB (as well as at DB and Punter), and starting for the GB Bulldogs under center in 1994 and 1995. He was voted into the BCAFL Hall of Fame in 1997 as an inaugural member.
More recently, Wyse played for the Farnham “Fast Lane” Knights, and un-surprisingly was a key part of the 2007 BAFL Division 1 Championship winning Knights team. Not only did he label the season as a “12 Step Recovery Plan”, but he was awarded Offensive Player of the Year, and scored the “winning” points in the Championship Game (a 47 – 7 victory !).
In 2008, following a relocation, Wyse played for the Southern Sundevils, and finished off the season playing in a variety of positions (including QB again !). The Sundevils reached the semi finals of BAFL Division 1. However, 2009 saw a return to the BAFL Premier Division, as Wyse moved into the west and lined up (as number 04 !!!) in the orange and black of the Bristol Aztecs where his Special Teams play saw him being awarded Special Teams MVP honours in 2009 and 2010. Additionally Wyse was named the Team MVP for the 2010 season, but finished playing for the Aztecs at the conclusion of the 2011 regular season.
