After being stagnant for the first three innings, Dorman’s offense erupted.
The Cavaliers scored four runs in the fourth, two in the fifth, and four in the sixth to erase a 4-0 deficit and defeat Spartanburg 14-4 in six innings on Friday night at Dorman.
The win clinches the Region II-4A title for Dorman and gives the seniors a game to remember.
“Beating our rivals, on senior night, in our last regular-season game, to clinch region, it couldn’t be any better than that,” Dorman senior Will Muzika said.
Muzika finished 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs.
The Cavaliers managed only an infield single in their first three at-bats but exploded for 15 hits in their last three.
“I looked them in the eyes and said ‘fellas, we ain’t losing this one,’ ” Dorman coach Ben Waddle said he told his team before heading to bat in the fourth.
His team responded by sending 11 batters to the plate.
Senior Dylan Cole got the rally started, singling and later scoring on Sammie Kennedy’s two RBI single.
Muzika followed with a home run to tie the game. Jake Kirkland added a double that scored two to give the Cavaliers a 6-4 lead before Spartanburg got out of the inning.
After starting the rally in the bottom of the fourth, Cole went on the mound and shut down the Vikings the rest of the way.
He allowed the first batter he faced to single before retiring the next six.
“Everything happened to be working for me tonight,” Cole said. “My No. 1 pitch is a fastball. I just try to get ahead in the count and throw hard.”
Fisher Easterling hit a home run, and T.J. Young hit an RBI single in the fifth to extend the Cavaliers’ lead to 8-4. Dorman added six runs in the sixth before the game was called.
Aaron Everette and Tyler Crocker both doubled twice for the Cavaliers.
Nicholas Myers led the way for Spartanburg, going 3-for-3, including a leadoff homer to start the game. Jordan Kollock and Justin Gullickson added RBI singles for the Vikings.
“For the first half of the ballgame we were pretty good, but like they say momentum can change in a heartbeat and that’s what got us,” Spartanburg coach Tom Myers said.
