Steve Sanders Spartanburg County Tourny
For 25 seasons, the Spartanburg County high schools baseball season has kicked off with the Steve Sanders Baseball Tournament. Named in honor of the late Herald-Journal sports writer, the tournament pits the Spartanburg County High School teams against each other in a pre-season tune up tournament. Starting on a Friday night in late February with opening ceremonies at Wofford College's baseball field featuring individual baseball skills competition, the ensueing week witnesses a series of games at various fields culminating with bracket final play offs that following Saturday afternoon.
Teams: Boiling Springs, Broome, Byrnes, Chapman, Chesnee, Dorman, Landrum, Spartanburg, and Woodruff.
The Steve Sanders Baseball Tournament began as the Jim Everhart Tournament and then became the Spartanburg County Tournament in 1983. Both tournaments were organized by former Chapman coach Bill Metcalf. The tournament was renamed in 1996 after Steve Sanders, the longtime preps sportswriter for the Spartanburg Herald-Journal who died in 1995. rev 3/18/09
