Spartanburg HS Baseball Team Wins State Championship
Pat Crowley claims that SHS won the state high school baseball championship in 1953. Anybody remember ? Let us know.
Update 12-19-00: By way of Asst AD Miles Wilson, Mike Cook has corrected us on the above. The 1943 Spartanburg High School Red Birds were the Class A South Carolina State Champions. They beat Sumter twice at Duncan Park to take the title that year.
Here is that team coached by Lonnie Dunlap: George Smith, Jimmy York, Mullett West, W.B. "Dub" Yates, Nat Walker, Bill Vaughn, Fred Rudasil, Jess Tindall, Hugh Swain, Jimmy Burwell, John Earnhardt, Jimmy Wallace, Bob "Chuck" McMillan, Wofford Shehan, Earl Tinsley, and manager Harry Mahaffey. Miles tells us that the dominate pitching of Jimmy York was the key to that championship team.
Vikes' 2000 Season Their Best
