Legion teams gear up for playoffs

AMERICAN LEGION PLAYOFFS
First round best-of-five series

The American Legion playoffs begin tonight and three area teams begin their quest for a state championship.

All games begin at 7 p.m.

League VI champion Spartanburg is hoping to avenge a disappointing exit from last year’s playoffs against the same team that bounced them in a second-round sweep.

Post 28 will host the first game of a best-of-five series against Rock Hill at Dorman High School.

Spartanburg coach Matthew West says his team is ready after a 13-day layoff.

“The mind-set is (the team) is just ready to play. We’ve had a little lull since our last game against Inman, and they are just ready to get back on the field,” West said. “We just have to win Game 1, then we can worry about Game 2.”

No. 3-seeded Inman returns to the playoffs after a one-year hiatus.

However, Post 45 has a tall order to fill as it travels to League V champion Chester.

“We just have to keep working on the things we’ve done all year, play together as a team and pull for one another,” said Inman coach Steve Skinner about facing the No. 1 seed. “If we do those things, we’ll be OK. If we don’t, we could be three and out.”

Gaffney — last year’s state representative in the Southeast Regionals — comes in as the No. 2 seed and will be on the road for Game 1 at Fort Mill.

Post 109 coach Jeff Osment isn’t familiar with his team’s first-round opponent but says its play shouldn’t be affected.

“We’re just going to be prepared to play in the playoffs,” Osment said. “This is what all the hard work is for. You practice so hard in the offseason to hopefully make the playoffs and then have a chance to win the state championship.”

This is the eighth consecutive year that Gaffney (12-4) has qualified for the postseason.

Osment says he expects that each League VI team will be competitive in their respective series.

“It will be a good series between all three teams in the league,” he said. “It will be playoff baseball. Each team is here for a reason.”

West and Skinner concur.

“We do have a confidence. We have a very competitive league with Gaffney and Inman,” West said. “We feel we can play with anyone in the state.”

“I just hope (our guys) realize that since we beat Spartanburg and Gaffney and had a couple of other close games with both that we can matchup with anybody,” Skinner said.

County teams set for 1st pitch in Steve Sanders Tournament

8 area squads to play over the next week

By BRIAN PEAHUFF, Spartamnurg Herald-Journal

The wait is finally over for high school baseball lovers.

The Steve Sanders Baseball Tournament gets under way today with four games across the county.

The tournament format is the same as it has been the past few years. The teams with the best records in the 4A and 2A brackets will meet in the championship game at 5 p.m. March 1 at Inman Mills Park.

Dorman, which beat Chapman last year in the championship game, will host Woodruff at 2 p.m. today. The Cavaliers will travel to Chapman for a 5 p.m. game Tuesday.

"It has been a long summer, fall and winter after not making the playoffs last season," Dorman coach Ben Waddle said. "Our seniors met for two weeks and discussed leadership, discipline and tradition and came up with our motto for the year, 'Have Fun' - that is our goal."

Former Woodruff coach Doug McNairy, who stepped down after last season, will join Waddle and his staff. Will Lanford will take over for McNairy at Woodruff.

"I couldn't be more excited about our players and team," Lanford said. "They have done everything I have asked of them since I took over the program last June. I believe it will be good for us to open with the first three games against Dorman, Byrnes and Boiling Springs."

Boiling Springs, the defending Region II-4A champions, should have a lot to say about which team comes out of the 4A bracket. The Bulldogs beat Chapman in the tournament championship two years ago.

"Each team we play is a quality 2A team, and we better be ready to play," Boiling Springs coach Jeff Lipscomb said. "Last year, we finished 3-2 in this tournament, so we definitely don't need to take any of these teams lightly."

"Depth is always a concern, and we are working on that during these games," Chapman coach Kevin Carr said. "It is a great way to prepare for our conference schedule."

Vikings land in Duncan Park, work out as crews prepare historic stadium for season
Duncan Park 1-30-08

By Jason Gilmer, Spartanburg Herald-Journal, published Jan 29, 2008

Members of the Spartanburg Vikings baseball team wore T-shirts that read “show up everyday” when they arrived for Monday’s practice.

They had to show up somewhere totally different, though.

The Vikings had their first workout at historic Duncan Park Monday evening, taking a couple of hours to go through throwing, fielding and hitting drills.

They weren’t alone.

Coach Tom Myers had to strain his voice a little for his players to hear him.

A Bobcat prowled the outfield, and workers used saws to cut metal for the outfield fence.

Instead of screaming to be heard, Myers simply brought his team closer together.

“This is the enemy,” he said and held up a baseball. “Catch it. Don’t let it hit the ground. Throwing and catching wins games.”

The Vikings spent a couple of hours on the spongy-soft grass, going through fielding drills, throwing and then hitting near the end of practice.

Pushing for late February

While the field is playable, Myers said they will be pushing to get the stadium ready for the Steve Sanders/Spartanburg County Baseball Tournament that begins in late February.

Fence poles have been placed, but the fence, which will be 10 feet high instead of a 14-foot block wall that once stood there, isn’t up. A temporary chain-link fence is in place to keep balls in and to keep players out of the way of construction crews.

The field’s dimensions will be almost the same: 319 feet down the lines, 360 feet in the gaps and 370 feet in centerfield.

“I believe in the next few years, you won’t be able to find a better setup across the state or maybe in the Southeast,” Myers said.

The Vikings won’t have to change the scoreboard because the last three teams (Stingers, Crickets, Post 28) to use the 82-year-old stadium all had Spartanburg in their names. So the school’s name is in the home spot, with “visitors” listed above it.

When the stadium’s refurbishing is complete, the seating area will be available to fans, and locker rooms are expected to be added. Now, players dress in their cars or in the dugout, and fans will have to sit on metal bleachers on the third-base side.

“It brings back memories of legion ball. I think I’m going to enjoy it,” pitcher David Haselden said. “Our old field was about as old as this one, and this blows it away.”

Spartanburg High School and the city formally agreed on Nov. 30 that the school could use Duncan Park, and both parties agreed to help pay for renovations. The softball and cross country teams also plan to use the facility.

Out in the community, Myers has heard how special the park is and how happy people are for someone to be playing baseball there. No team played there last summer.

Myers said he thought playing in Duncan Park might “kick start” the program some.

“I love that they’re doing it for the younger kids coming up in the program,” third baseman Will Hardin said. “I think it’s going to attract a lot more of them to come out and play.”
