37th District Preview

Girls' 37th District preview

By Kyle Brown • Enquirer Staff Writer • November 29, 2008

Scott is the slight favorite in the 37th District, but it should be a battle for the top spots with Campbell County and Bishop Brossart.

Campbell County won the district over Brossart last season, but Scott has two players in Shelbi Benzinger and Lauren Tibbs who will be tough to contain.

None of the top three teams has more than three starters returning, so it could make for an interesting district tournament.

Scott

COACH: Rhonda Klette (29-53)

LAST SEASON: 11-18

KEY PLAYERS: G Shelbi Benzinger, F Lauren Tibbs, G Bethany Pelle, F Emily Davis

OUTLOOK: Benzinger and Tibbs give the Eagles a nice returning inside-outside presence. Benzinger averaged 11.7 points per game last season and the 6-3 Tibbs averaged 16.4 points and 10.2 rebounds per game as a freshman. Pelle and Davis are both seniors who will provide experience.

Campbell County

COACH: Ed Cravens (165-148)

LAST SEASON: 15-13

KEY PLAYERS: G Katie Kitchen,

G Paige Bowling, C Brianna Peters

OUTLOOK: Kitchen and Bowling return as starters, with Peters, Stephanie Marino and Taylor Griffin newcomers expected by Cravens to step up. Kitchen is nearing 1,000 points in her career, and a lot of the scoring load will fall on her shoulders. The Camels will count on an experienced bench, as they go for back-to-back winning seasons.

Bishop Brossart

COACH: Camey Eberhard (53-30)

LAST SEASON: 15-12

KEY PLAYERS: G Emily Sanker,

F Hannah Uthe, F Sara Cuthrell

OUTLOOK: There are no seniors on Brossart's roster this season, but a strong junior class is expected to lead the Mustangs. Sanker averaged 12.3 points a game, Uthe 8.6 and Cuthrell 8.2 as sophomores last season and will be counted on even more this season. Fellow junior Ana Dischar is expected to see a lot of time at guard, while sophomore Nicole Ridder will be one of the top post players.

Silver Grove

COACH: Ray Kues (441-214)

LAST SEASON: 2-24

KEY PLAYERS: G Cindy Miller,

G Kelly Black, G Nikki Elmore

OUTLOOK: After re-establishing the varsity program at Silver Grove last season and winning two games, Kues expects the team to be more prepared to play at the varsity level. All five starters return from last season, but there are no seniors on the roster. Miller is the top returning scorer after averaging more than nine points per game.

Scott's 1-2 punch provides knockout - Benzinger, Tibbs combine for 47 points in victory - Scott wins 73-34 over Cooper

The Scott girls' basketball team is trying to build an effective inside/outside scoring combination with its two best offensive players, senior guard Shelbi Benzinger and 6-foot-3 sophomore center Lauren Tibbs.

Cooper is trying to build a team in its first year of existence under head coach Shannon Turner.

Each squad on Thursday took another step toward the next level in its respective building process, as Scott coasted to its second win of the season, a 73-34 home victory against the Jaguars, who are still looking for the program's maiden victory after six games.

"We're getting there," Turner said. "Each day we get a little closer. I tell the girls not to look at the scoreboard, but to improve every game."

Scott coach Rhonda Klette delivers a similar message to her Eagles, but she encourages her girls to pay attention to the score.

"We've played very well when Shelbi and Lauren work together in the inside-outside attack. And they are really improving with that every day, along with all the other girls, who we depend on to help out as much as possible," Klette said.

"We went up on them pretty fast tonight, so there was a lot we got to work on, and I thought we did pretty well."

Scott (2-2) sprinted to a 32-10 first-quarter lead with the help of a 13-0 scoring run during which Benzinger drilled two of her four 3-pointers in the quarter.

Benzinger scored 14 first-quarter points and totaled 22 by halftime on the way to a career-high 29. She nailed five 3-pointers in the contest.

Tibbs finished with 18 points and a game-high 10 rebounds, six on the offensive end, four of which resulted in putback baskets.

The Eagles led 52-17 at halftime.

"Coach says we have to go inside-outside as much as we can, so I'm penetrating and dishing, and shooting, and we're trying to rotate people at the top to create openings," said Benzinger, who is being switched from point guard to shooting guard this season to spur her scoring production.

"I think we're looking pretty good," Tibbs said. "We still have some rough spots. But our goal is to win the (37th) district and get to region, so we're going to be working as hard as we can to get better."

Scott last won a district championship in 2004. The Eagles have never won a girls' basketball regional title.

But Klette is confident that Benzinger and Tibbs working in concert with role players is going to pay some big dividends down the road.

"We lost in the first round of the district last year and that was a disappointment. But we gained experience," the coach said. "Shelbi is one of three seniors who are learning to lead. Lauren, one day, is going to be the best post player in the region. We're trying to put them on the same side of the floor so defenses can't cheat as much."

Senior Bethany Pelle, Scott's new point guard, finished with a 3-pointer and four assists. Senior forward Emily Davis added seven points.

Katlyn Sams, who has five years of AAU basketball experience but none at the high school varsity level, hit three 3-pointers and led Cooper with 13 points. Kendall Sebald added 10 points for the Jaguars (0-6).

"We're improving moving the ball around. But we didn't make one free throw, and we only shot two," Turner said.

"And we really need to improve our help defense. We fall asleep on the back side of the zone and lose people on the weak side. It takes small steps, and we're making them. And we'll keep building on them."

Scott hangs tough with Boone but fall 58-49

Tuesday night's victory was not the prettiest among the 500-plus wins in Boone County coach Nell Fookes' career. In fact, the game was downright ugly at times.

Despite enduring one of their worst shooting performances of the season and with leading scorer Jacy Bradley held to just seven points, the young Rebels found a way to win.

Junior Heather Sandlin scored a career-high 20 points, including four 3-pointers, lifting Boone County, ranked No. 4 in the Enquirer Northern Kentucky coaches' poll, to a 58-49 victory over No. 9 Scott.

"We really got sparked by Sandlin and our guard play defensively," Fookes said. "I think we wore them down some. Our kids don't understand the expectations of them yet. We have to play more consistently."

Joscelyn Davis scored 11 points, and Lauren Bowling added 10 for the Rebels.

Scott, tied with St. Henry for ninth in the Enquirer Northern Kentucky poll, was led by sophomore Lauren Tibbs, who scored all 19 of her points in the second half.

Senior Shelbi Benzinger had 13 points and Emily Davis added 12 for the Eagles.

Bradley, one of just two senior starters for Boone County, entered Tuesday's game averaging 14.5 points per game and having scored in double figures 10 times.

She scored just five points in the first half, but she finished the game with nine assists.

"We need her to score in double figures every game," Fookes said. "She'd really rather pass the ball and do those things. She does a great job of that, but she has to score for us."

Boone County's shooting was ice-cold early in Tuesday's game. Bradley missed her first two shots as the Rebels began 1-for-6.

While Boone County was trying to find its shot, Bethany Pelle scored to put Scott ahead 8-7.

Neither team scored in the first 3:35 of the second quarter. Sandlin ended the stalemate with a 3-pointer putting the Rebels ahead 10-8.

Shortly after Bradley was assessed a technical foul for arguing a non-foul call, Boone County caught fire. Bowling and Bradley each hit 3-pointers sparking a 10-0 run to put the Rebels ahead 20-11.

Benzinger kept the Eagles close with two 3-pointers late in the half. But Davis' jump shot put the Rebels ahead 24-17, and Boone County took the lead into halftime despite shooting just 26.5 percent.

Cortney Sellers' 3-pointer off a pass from Bradley made the score 29-21 early in the third quarter.

"We rely on (Bradley) a lot to score," said Sandlin. "She really couldn't find her shot tonight. But toward the end of the game she helped out by setting us up for a lot of shots."

Sandlin hit consecutive 3-pointers to give Boone County its largest lead, 35-21.

Tibbs, a 6-foot-2 center, scored 15 consecutive points in an attempt to rally Scott down the stretch. But the Eagles could get no closer than six points.

Boone County forced 20 turnovers and recorded 16 assists.

Scott (3-7) - Benzinger 5 1 13, Pelle 1 0 2, Davis 5 2 12, Tibbs 8 3 19, Kuhse 1 0 2. Totals: 20 6 49.

Boone County (10-3) - Bradley 3 0 7, Davis 4 3 11, Sellers 1 0 3, Sandlin 7 2 20, Marschall 2 0 4, Browning 1 0 3, Bowling 3 2 10. Totals: 21 7 58.

Scott 8 9 13 19 -49
Boone County 7 17 17 17 -58

3-pointers: S 2 (Benzinger 2), B 9 (Bowling 2, Sandlin 4, Sellers 1, Browning 1, Bradley 1).

Camels get past Eagles 57-53 to capture #1 district seed

Camels get past Eagles 57-53

Bowling makes clutch shots late

Senior Paige Bowling hit a jumper in the lane with 45 seconds to play to put Campbell County ahead and later hit a free throw to secure the lead for the Camels as they defeated Scott 57-53 in a girls' basketball game Tuesday.

The Eagles, who were 5-of-12 from the foul line, missed three free throws in the game's final 16 seconds.

Campbell County and Scott are tied for eighth in the Enquirer Northern Kentucky coaches' poll.

Bowling led Campbell County with 25 points. Scott sophomore center Lauren Tibbs led all scorers with 31 points.

The game featured two individual milestones. Tibbs, who is two points shy of 1,000, collected her 600th career rebound. Campbell County senior Katie Kitchen scored her 1,000th point in the first half and had 20 in the game.

The victory keeps the Camels atop the 37th District rankings with a 2-0 record.

Conner beats Scott 55-46

HEBRON - During Conner's run to the state tournament last year, Lady Cougars coach Kim Warfield rarely played more than six players.

This season's version might not have the same quality of personnel, but they do have more quantity.

"Now when our shooters aren't on, we can keep looking down our bench and hopefully find someone who is," Warfield said.

On Thursday, that someone was Payton Malone.

After spending most of the game on the bench, the junior guard knocked down a pair of 3-pointers in the final minutes to help Conner pull away for a 55-46 victory over Scott.

The win raised Conner's record to 14-6. It is ranked No. 7 in The Enquirer coaches' poll and is 5-2 since losing junior point guard Devin Beasley to shoulder surgery.

Those victories haven't come easily. Four of the five wins without Beasley have been by single digits.

"We're missing (Beasley) terribly on defense," Warfield said. "We are still trying to find our team chemistry (without her)."

The Lady Cougars eventually discovered some of that illusive chemistry, but not before Scott jumped out to a double-digit lead in the second quarter.

The Lady Eagles still led 44-41 midway through the final quarter. That's when Malone began her long-distance heroics - knocking down a 3-pointer to tie the game with 3:10 left to play.

Another Malone 3-pointer pushed Conner ahead 49-46 with just under two minutes left on the clock.

"We had a revolving door (on our bench) tonight to try to find someone to hit some (3-pointers)," Warfield said. "For (Malone) to step on the court after being on the bench most of the night and not be afraid to take (big shots), that was huge."

Guards Allison Long and Ellory Kring followed Malone's clutch shooting by knocking down six of seven free throws late in the game.

Long finished with a team-high 21 points. Kring - the new starting point guard - chipped in 14.

The Eagles (5-13) have now dropped six of their last seven games. That skid hasn't stopped sophomore Lauren Tibbs from continuing to compile monster numbers. The 6-foot-4 center equaled her season average with 26 points and added 13 rebounds.

With Tibbs leading the way, Scott scored 17 of its first 20 points in the paint to take a 13-point lead early in the second period.

The Lady Cougars fought their way back by ending the half with a 16-2 run.

"I keep telling the kids that we can't keep coming out without any intensity," Warfield said. "(Our players) wait until it's almost too late and then they pick it up. Then they decide, 'Now we'll fight.' That almost cost us tonight."

Scott (5-13) - Benzinger 3 2 8, Pelle 1 1 4, Davis 1 1 3, Jackson 2 1 5, Tibbs 9 8 26. Totals 16 13 46.

SK beats Scott 87-58

Two of the top scorers in Kentucky squared off on Saturday, but thanks to a superior supporting cast, Chelsea Tolliver and her Simon Kenton team came out on top.

Led by the senior guard’s 28 points, the Pioneers set a Jeff Stowers-era scoring mark and blew out Scott, 87-58 in Taylor Mill.

Scott 6-feet-4 sophomore center Lauren Tibbs, who averaged 25 points per game, was held to 13 on just three field goals.

“We knew it was going to be a problem for them – our depth,” Simon Kenton coach Jeff Stowers said. “Plus the fact that if you can key in on a couple of players, and make the other people beat you.”

Simon Kenton led, 11-9 with one minute left in the first quarter when Pioneers junior Ali Ponzer hit a 3-pointer, and Tolliver followed with a trey of her one 11 seconds later.

Sophomore point guard Sydni Wainscott also hit a shot from behind the arc with 14 seconds left in the quarter, giving the Pioneers a 20-11 lead.

Simon Kenton extended its lead to 12 points on another Wainscott three with 2:47 remaining in the half, but Eagles senior guard Shelbi Benzinger made a pair of free throws and Tibbs scored four points in 20 seconds to cut the deficit to six, 34-28 with a minute left until halftime.

Tolliver and senior center Caitlyn Figgins made quick baskets to start the second half, giving Simon Kenton a 40-30 lead, but Scott again refused to let the Pioneers pull away.

Tibbs and senior forward Emily Davis both hit field goals and Benzinger connected on another 3-pointer to cut the Pioneers’ lead to three, 40-37.

   And then Tolliver intervened.

Held to eight points in the first half (she even sat for a decent part of it) plus an early basket in the third quarter, Tolliver scored 10 points in the last 5:30 of the period as the Pioneers went on a 19-4 run to close out the quarter.

Then Tolliver scored eight consecutive Simon Kenton points during a smaller 13-5 run in the first four minutes of the fourth quarter to seal the game.

“At the beginning we came out with a slow start,” Tolliver said. “But toward the end, we picked it up – our shots started falling.”

Of her 28 total points, she scored 20 during an 11:35 span in the third and fourth quarters.

“The big thing with Chelsea is she’s got to play defense,” Stowers said. “If she’s playing defense, her offense usually picks up.”

Said Tolliver: “I just kept shooting and they started falling for me in the end.”

Tolliver creates a defensive nightmare for any team, and Wainscott’s 3-point shooting gave Scott fits, but another Pioneer also made the Eagles’ lives miserable: Junior forward Nikki Brown.

Brown, who is not one of Simon Kenton’s major scoring threats, hit some tough shots around the basket and converted her free throws to finish with 17 points off the bench.

“They go deep on their bench, and that’s where we struggle at,” Klette said.

Benzinger ended up with a team-high 22 for Scott, which had not surrendered more than 71 points in any game this season. Benzinger and Tibbs accounted for 60 percent of the Eagles’ scoring.

“Most of the time, those (key) players are going to get theirs,” Stowers said. “But I think we have a few more weapons.”

Stowers was happy about his team’s defense on Tibbs.

“The way we play defense, I knew it was going to be a problem for her,” Stowers said. “She didn’t get the ball down low, in her sweet spots, where she likes to get the ball at. Plus Cait Figgins did a tremendous job on her.”

Frequent foul calls were one of the key reasons the Pioneers finished with their highest point total this millennium and Scott surrendered more than in any game since the KHSAA began archiving results.

The teams combined to make 52 free throws, many as a result of both teams entering the super bonus before the third quarter ended.

“I thought that we played a great game the first half, and it just kind of comes down sometimes to that depth that other teams have,” Klette said.

While Tibbs’ bid for Scott’s all-time scoring record will not unfold for two seasons, Tolliver’s pulled to within 18 of the 2,000 mark for her career.

The school record is 2,185, and because of recent weather postponements, the Pioneers have just four regular-season games remaining.
