Alibrandis Pitcher Derek Bates retires from the YBL
One of the best pitchers in the history of the Yawkey Baseball League, Derek Bates called it a career at the end ot the 2009 season by announcing his retirement after the playoffs. Derek was an impressive young pitcher when he joined the team. He fit right in with a staff of Shawn Nadeau and Marc DesRoches and after a few years began to stand out as one of the best pitchers in the league. This was confirmed when Derek was voted by the league mananger's as the Pitcher of the Year in three consecutive seasons( 2002, 2003 and 2004 ) and earning a start at Fenway Park in a YBL All Star Game. His final performance was one for the ages as he struck out the final 9 batters he ever faced in getting the victory of a must win game 5 versus AlThomas. His hard work and team first attitude will be missed and in his honor the team has retired his uniform #40.

20th Season end Somerville Highlander/Alibrandis Baseball Club in Semi Finals
The Somerville Highlander Alumni / Alibrandis Baseball Team completed its 20th Season in the Yawkey Baseball League by being defeated by the Malden Bulldogs 3-0 in the semi-final round of the 2009 YBL Playoffs. This trip marked the 14th trip to the playoffs in the teams historic past, after going 20-11-1 in the regular season. That was the 5th best record, but earned then the #6 seed in the tournament. In round 1, Somerville matched up with the AlThomas Athletics. AlThomas came off another impressive season winning their conference and earning the #3 seed. The series like their last meeting in the playoffs went the distance and in game 5 Somerville took the deciding game on the back of great relief pitching of Derek Bates who got out of a bases loaded jam with no outs in the 5th. Bates, in what was his final apperance in a YBL game struck out all 9 batters he faced. However the run for another league championship was not meant to be as Somerville ran into the best team of the regular season, the Malden Bulldogs who has a 25-6-1 record and the playoffs #1 seed. The sweep ended the 20th season, and also saw the end to the career of Marc DesRoches who after 14 years as the most decorated players ever in the YBL announced his retirement. The Somerville Alibrandis team ended with an overall record of 23-16-1.
