Little League teams have one Head Coach and one Coach. There can be additional “Assistant Coaches” who help at games and practices but these are not assigned positions and are at the discretion of the team Head Coach. The team Head Coach is assigned to a team before the players are selected and the Head Coach selects the players for his team according to Little League rules and under the supervision of the League Player Agent. After the players are assigned to a team the Coach for that team is selected, usually from the parents of the players on the team. No Head Coach or Coaches have tenure and returning Head Coaches and Coaches must be re-appointed every year.
Head Coaches and Coaches are recommended to the League President by the Coach Selection Committee which consists of Little League Board of Directors members who are not coaches. The League President appoints the Head Coach or Coach and the entire League Board of Directors confirms the appointment.
Parents who are interested in coaching their child’s Little League team should express their interest by selecting “Team Head Coach” or “Team Coach” on the 2008 Volunteer Preference Form. The Coach Selection Committee will then contact the parent to confirm their interest and ask them to complete a Volunteer Application Form which is used to conduct a criminal background check. The parent will then be required to complete a Rutger’s certification course if one has not been completed in the past. The parent will also be asked to attend a Little League Coaches Clinic either before or after selection depending upon clinic availability.
There are several things to be aware of regarding the Head Coach and Coach selection process. First, the process of interviewing, checking, and training potential coaches takes several weeks so if you want to be a Head Coach or Coach you should register your player and complete your Volunteer Preference Form before February 10, 2008. Second, Head Coaches are chosen before the players are selected bu Coaches are not chosen unti after the players are assigned so your child may be selected onto a team with several other players who have parents who are also qualified coaches. Only one Coach is allowed per team so the Coaches Selection Committee will decide which potential Coach will benefit the players most and recommend that parent to the President for appointment.
