How are players assigned to divisions and teams?

Shore Regional Little League offers five divisions of play:

AA Minors

The AA Minors division consists of children ages 7, 8, and 9 on 4/30/08. 7-year-olds must be in 2nd grade. The number of teams in the league is adjusted yearly so that one half of the 9-year-olds in the League are in this division.

AAA Minors

The AAA Minors division consists of children ages 9, 10, and 11 on 4/30/8. Exceptional 8-year-olds may be selected to play in this division with their parent’s consent. The number of teams in the league is adjusted so that one half of the 9-year-olds and one half of the 11-year-olds are in this division.

Majors Division

The Majors division consists of children ages 11 and 12 on 4/30/08. Exceptional 10-year-olds may be selected to play in this division with their parent’s consent. Beginning this year, all 12-year-olds, are required by Little League International to play in this division or Juniors division unless a waiver is approved by the parent, the league, and the league district administrator.

Juniors Division

The Juniors division consists of children ages 13 and 14 on 4/30/08.

Seniors Division

The Seniors division consists of children ages 15 and 16 on 4/30/08.

Assigment of players to divisions and teams.

Players are contacted in February and asked to attend an indoor player evaluation where baseball coaches who are not coaches in our league observe and grade them on their ability to field ground balls, catch fly balls, throw, and hit as well as run. Each evaluator grades each child on each skill and the results are compiled. League team managers can also attend player evaluations and make their own observations of the players.

Two evaluation sessions are conducted and each player must attend one of them. 2nd, 3rd, and 4th graders are usually asked to attend the first session while 5th and 6th graders are asked to attend the second.

Since the League allows players to register up until the time of evaluations, after the evaluations are complete, the League Board of Directors decides how many teams should be in each division so that the 9-year-olds are split between the AA Minors Division and the AAA Minors Division and the 11-year-olds are split between the AAA Minors Division and the Majors Division.

After the number of Majors Division teams is set, the Coach Selection Committee, who are board members who are not Head Coaches or Coaches, recommends a Head Coach for each Majors team to the President who then appoints the Head Coach for each team who then must be approved by the board of directors. The Majors division Head Coaches select their players according to Little League International procedures under the direction of the Player Agent. Before the draft, if a Head Coach expresses interest in drafting any of the 10-year-old players, the Player Agent will contact the players to make sure that they want to play in the Majors Division if drafted. 11-year-old players may express their desire to the Player Agent to play in the AAA Minors Division.
