Young Irish Earn 4th Consecutive Trip to the Playoffs

Despite the loss of several outstanding seniors at the end of the 2008 season, the 2009 Irish successfully navigated a rebuilding season by finishing fourth in the always-tough Southwest Conference and earning a state playoff spot for the fourth consecutive season. 

The Irish said goodbye to two outstanding seniors - Teea Rogers and Tami Brown. Teea will play softball for the University of Massachussetts, while Tami earned a volleyball scholarship at Oregon State University.  

Team awards were given to the following players:

VARSITY:

Most Improved Players:  Hannah Brown, Tori Wilkinson

Outstanding Defensive Player:  Cleo Nagy

Outstanding Offensive Player:  Teea Rogers

Coach's Award:  Taylor Taggart

Most Valuable Player:  Tami Brown

Five Irish players were named to the All-Southwest Conference team for the 2009 season:

Named to the First Team were seniors Teea Rogers (IF) and Tami Brown (C), and sophomores Taylor Taggart (OF) and Chloe Stiles (DP/Utility). 

After two years in the outfield, junior Jessica Patterson made a successful transition to the hot corner and was given Honorable Mention status by conference coaches as an infielder. 

JUNIOR VARSITY:

Outstanding Defensive Player:  Gwen LeCavalier

Outstanding Offensive Player:  McKenzie Doe

Coach's Award:  Jamie Whisler

May 22

Varsity (12-15, 5-10 SWC): Franklin 3, Sheldon 2

Sheldon fell victim to defensive lapses to drop a first-round playoff game and end the season. Teea Rogers had two hits, including a triple, in her final appearance for the Irish. Torie Halverson gave up only two hits in an outstanding performance in the circle.

May 19

Varsity (12-14, 5-10 SWC): Thurston 9, Sheldon 6

Chloe Stiles, Cleo Nagy, and Hannah Brown had two hits each to lead the Irish offense.

May 16

Varsity (12-13, 5-10 SWC: Roseburg 9, Sheldon 0

Jr Varsity (6-17, 3-11 SWC): Roseburg 12, Sheldon 3

Varsity (12-11, 5-8 SWC): Sheldon 4, South Medford 0

Chloe Stiles had a two-run homer and a double to lead a 12 hit attack. Torie Halverson tossed a two-hit shutout for the win.

Varsity (11-10, 4-7 SWC): Grants Pass 13, Sheldon 0

                                      Grants Pass 9, Sheldon 0

Freshman Angela Whitty singled to center in the second game for her first varsity hit to highlight the day for the Irish.

Jr Varsity (6-13, 3-7 SWC): Grants Pass 10, Sheldon 0

May 2

Varsity (11-8, 4-5 SWC): Sheldon 7, South Eugene 4

                                     Sheldon 7, South Eugene 0

Teea Rogers hit two solo home runs, and Jessica Patterson added three hits and scored three runs to pace a 10-hit attack in the first game. The Irish matched their 10-hit output in game two, inlcuding a three-run home run from Tami Brown. Cleo Nagy, Hannah Brown, and Teea Rogers added two hits apiece. Torie Halverson went the distance in both games, fighting through wet weather and a rain delay to post two wins.

Varsity (9-8, 2-5 SWC): Roseburg 8, Sheldon 0

Jr Varsity (5-11, 2-5 SWC): Roseburg 10, Sheldon 0

April 25

Varsity (9-7, 2-4 SWC):  North Medford 11, Sheldon 1

                                    North Medford 13, Sheldon 2

Chloe Stiles had a two-run homer and a double in the second game to highlight the day. Teea Rogers doubled in both games.

April 21

Varsity (9-5, 2-2 SWC): Sheldon 9, South Eugene 3

Cleo Nagy drove in three runs with a bases-loaded double to tie the game, and Sheldon went on to unleash a 14-hit attack to beat South Eugene. Teea Rogers homered, tripled, and scored three runs, and five other Irish hitters had two hits each. 

Jr Varsity (5-8, 2-2 SWC): Sheldon 11, South Eugene 8

April 18

Varsity (8-5, 1-2 SWC): Game 1- South Medford 5, Sheldon 2

                                   Game 2 - Sheldon 10, South Medford 9

Chloe Stiles delivered a bases-loaded double in the bottom of the 7th inning in game two to drive in three runs and give the Irish a doubleheader split. Stiles and Tami Brown each had three hits to lead the Irish; Teea Rogers, Taylor Taggart, and Jessica Patterson added two hits each to the Irish offense. Taggart scattered six hits over five innings of relief pitching to gain the win in the circle.

Jr Varsity (4-8): Game 1 - South Medford 12, Sheldon 1

                        Game 2 - Sheldon 14, South Medford 10

April 15

Varsity (7-4, 0-1 SWC): Grants Pass 4, Sheldon 0

Sheldon dropped their conference opener to defending state champion Grants Pass. Teea Rogers (double), Cleo Nagy, and Jessica Patterson had the only hits for the Irish.

Jr Varsity (3-7): Grants Pass 10, Sheldon 0 

April 9

Varsity (7-3): Sheldon 8, Wilson 7 (8 innings)

The Irish clawed their way back from an early 7-0 deficit to take the win. Chloe Stiles led off the 8th inning with a base hit, was sacrificed to second base by Jessica Patterson, and scored the game winner on an RBI single to center by Hannah Brown. Taylor Taggart pitched five innings of shutout relief to earn the win in the circle. Cleo Nagy had three hits for the Irish, including a double and an RBI.

Jr Varsity (3-6): West Salem 5, Sheldon 3

April 6

Varsity (6-3): Sheldon 1, North Eugene 0

Sheldon played near flawless defense in support of  Torie Halverson's shutout pitching to defeat the Highlanders. Teea Rogers was 3 for 3 with the only RBI of the game.

Jr Varsity (3-5): North Eugene 16, Sheldon 10 

April 3

Varsity (5-3): Sheldon 12, Reynolds 0

Teea Rogers knocked in six runs with a grand slam homer and two-run single, and Cleo Nagy closed out a five inning victory with a three-run homer in the 5th inning to give the Irish the win. Pitcher Torie Halverson shut out Reynolds and helped her own cause with two RBI singles.

Jr Varsity (3-4): Sheldon 9, Reynolds 4

April 2

Varsity (4-3): Willamette 7, Sheldon 6

Tami Brown and Chloe Stiles had three hits each to lead the Irish offense.

Varsity (4-2): Sheldon 11, West Linn 0 (six innings - run rule)

Taylor Taggart had three hits and two RBI, and Cleo Nagy continued her strong hitting with a two for two day, including a two-run homer, to lead the Irish to its third victory in Bend. Tami Brown, Teea Rogers, Jessica Patterson, and Chloe Stiles had two hits each for the Irish. Torie Halverson threw a four-hit complete game shutout. 

March 24

Varsity (3-2): Sheldon 14, Redmond 12

Sheldon continued its hard hitting with a 16 hit barrage to win a  slugfest with Redmond. Cleo Nagy had four hits including a double and knocked in three runs, and Tami Brown had a four hit day including a double and scored three runs to lead the Irish. Teea Rogers, Chloe Stiles, and Jessica Patterson added two hits each. 

March 23

Varsity (2-2): Sheldon 10, Mountain View 4

The Irish unloaded a 14-hit attack to beat the Cougars. Teea Rogers led off the game with a monster home run over a 20-foot high left field fence, and added three hits during the game for a 4 for 4 game. Taylor Taggart had two hits, including a grand slam home run to right field, and knocked in 5 runs for the day. Hannah Brown and Tami Brown each had two hit days. Torie Halverson scattered four hits for the complete game victory.

March 20

Varsity (1-2): Barlow 11, Sheldon 4

Sheldon dropped its home opener to Barlow's strong offensive performance. Chloe Stiles was 2 for 3 with three runs batted in to lead the Irish, while Teea Rogers added two hits.

Jr Varsity (1-1): Barlow 10, Sheldon 5

March 18

Varsity (1-1): Sheldon 9, Thurston 4

Sheldon broke out the bats to take the road win over Thurston. Teea Rogers had a 3 for 3 day with a home run, triple, and single, scoring four runs and driving in three. Cleo Nagy knocked in two runs with two doubles, and played strong defense in the infield. Taylor Taggart and Chloe Stiles both had two hit days. Stiles broke open the game in the bottom of the first with a bases-loaded single to right that went through the legs of the right fielder to score all three runners. Torie Halverson threw another strong game, scattering eight hits while walking only only one batter in seven innings.

Jr Varsity (1-0): Sheldon 13, Thurston 9

March 16

Varsity (0-1): Marist 2, Sheldon 0

The Irish dropped the season opener, falling victim to two-hit pitching by Nyree White and untimely defensive lapses. Teea Rogers and Cleo Nagy had the only two Sheldon hits. Tori Halverson scattered seven hits and gave up only one earned run in a strong performance.
