SHELDON IRISH FASTPITCH: 2006 Season
SHELDON IRISH FASTPITCH

Great Season for the Irish!

The 2006 season was outstanding and memorable - one of the best seasons in Sheldon's history. The Irish closed the season at 22-6, a nine game improvement in the win column over the previous season. Sheldon enjoyed solid defense and pitching throughout the season, and boasted one of the top offenses in the state. Eight Irish starters received all-league honors: Taylor Pangilinan, Kaycee Gamez, Katie Steigleman, Theresa Brown, Teea Rogers, Chloe Buerstatte, Kaitlyn Patterson, and Sienna Stanley - all but Kaycee will return next season.

First year Sheldon varsity letter awards were given to players Teea Rogers, Jordan Goschie, Niki Stafek, and Tami Brown, as well as to team manager Molly Owens. Annual award winners included the following:

Most Inspirational Player: Lacy McJunkin
Most Improved Player: Theresa Brown
Coaches Award: Kaitlyn Patterson
Defensive Player of the Year: Sienna Stanley
Offensive Players of the Year: Katie Stiegleman, Taylor Pangilinan
Most Valuable Player: Kaycee Gamez

SEASON GAME SUMMARY

MAY 25

Varsity (22-6): Westview 5, Sheldon 3 (playoff game)

The Irish season came to an end on Thursday afternoon with a 5-3 loss to Westview. The Irish came to compete despite the difficult travel and late nights of the previous two days, jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning on a three-run home run by Taylor Pangilinan. However, the Irish couldn't produce any more runs against a solid Westview defense. Senior Kaycee Gamez closed out her remarkable Sheldon career with a 3 for 3 day, including a double, and scored a run.

Sheldon finished with a 22-6 record for the 2006 season, a nine game improvement over 2005.

MAY 24

Varsity (22-5): Sheldon 10, Centennial 9 (8 innings) (playoff game)

The Irish overcame a five run deficit in the top of the seventh inning with a memorable rally to tie the game, then won the game outright with two more runs in the eighth inning to defeat Centennial 10-9. The victory capped a two day, 700-plus mile odyssey that took the Irish first to Hood River, and then back to Centennial (Gresham) to play a seven inning 6-6 tie on Tuesday, May 23 - followed by a return trip to Centennial on Wednesday to replay the game, only to see Wednesday's game stopped by rain in the top of the second inning and moved to Hillsboro Stadium to be completed on artificial turf under the lights.

The Sheldon girls jumped out to a 3-0 lead on the strength of a booming triple by Theresa Brown, but eventually fell behind 8-3 by the seventh inning. The Irish bats finally awoke in the top of the seventh. Niki Stafek opened the inning with a booming double to the fence, raising hopes and changing the game's momentum. Minutes later, Taylor Pangilinan delivered the big hit - a bases-loaded double down the right field line to tie the game. The Irish took the lead in the top of the eighth inning on a two-run double by Katie Steigleman, and then held on for the win with some strong defense as Centennial left the tieing and winning runs on base in the bottom of the inning.

The Irish duplicated their 11 hit effort against Centennial pitching from the previous day. Chloe Buerstatte, Teea Rogers, and Niki Stafek all had two hits for the Irish.

Jordan Goschie pitched five-plus innings of solid relief to pick up the pitching win.
