SHELDON HOOP NOTES:
Happy Holidays from Irish Hoops!!
Martin scores 29 in loss to 4th-ranked Jesuit -- Even a career high 29 points from sophomore Cymone Martin and an unlikely Sheldon rebounding advantage over a tall Jesuit team wasn't enough as the Irish fell behind early and never recovered in a 72-52 loss on Tuesday afternoon in Portland. The game was the second in less than 24 hours for the Irish after suffering a disappointing 43-33 loss to Lincoln on Monday night at Lincoln.
Despite trailing the Crusaders 25-7 after the first quarter, Sheldon competed well the rest of the way even though Jesuit had a huge size advantage at every position. Jesuit built its early lead by shooting well from the three-point line and overwhelming Sheldon for much of the first quarter with full court pressure. No other scorers had more than five points for the Irish, but eight players scored. Five freshmen saw game action against Jesuit, including Hannah Rodrigues, who grabbed seven rebounds and dished out four assists along with scoring five points.
Martin ran her consecutive game streak of double-doubles to six, as the 5'10 post grabbed 12 rebounds to go with her 29 points as she put on an impressively strong performance in 31 minutes of action, despite the Sheldon loss. Martin is averaging 17.2 points and 12.3 rebounds a game for the Irish through six games.
Sheldon has three days off for Christmas before opening play in the Gary Lavender Nike Interstate Shootout at Lake Oswego Sunday, Dec. 27 at 3:30 pm against West Albany. The four-game tournament concludes on Dec 30. Sheldon opens Southwest Conference play with a home game on Tuesday, January 5 against Grants Pass.

Sheldon wins at North Eugene -- Sheldon faced the 2009 5A state tournament runner-up North Eugene on the road Tuesday night and the Irish came away with a hard-fought 49-46 victory. Behind a solid team defensive effort and a convincing rebounding edge, the Irish led throughout the game and took a 11-point lead into the fourth quarter before withstanding a North rally down the stretch.
Sophomore Cymone Martin recorded her fourth straight double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Irish. Alisen Hinton scored 12 points and had two assists while maintaining poise against a furious NE defensive effort late in the game. Kristin Clark came off the bench to lead Irish scorers with 14 points and she grabbed five rebounds. Carlee Hauser had six boards and two steals and Hannah Rodrigues dished out four assists for the Irish. In her first career start, Ellie McConville had three boards, two steals and two assists as Sheldon improved its record to 2-2 for the season.
