Shelburne Soccer Club

The Shelburne Soccer Club has its origins in a local recreational league, which was formed in the 1970’s. The league was formed as the Shelburne Minor Soccer Association and, throughout the early years, it consisted of various numbers of teams often with very large age differences. There were just over 50 players. The Association had no affiliations, they often recycled uniforms and shoes and had virtually no funds, but the kids had fun.

In 1987, Shelburne Minor Soccer Club was formed and we began to resemble what the club is today. The players were getting better, the coaches figured out that soccer isn’t the same as hockey, and we were invited to compete against the Orangeville Minor Soccer Club. The Club developed affiliations with the Orangeville Minor Soccer Club, South West Regional Soccer Association as well as the Ontario Soccer Association. The Club had nearly 100 players. The players got new uniforms, the Club still had no funds, but the kids still had fun.

In the spring of 1995, after competing with teams from the Orangeville Minor Soccer Club for six years, we were told that Orangeville had too many local soccer players and that their schedules couldn’t accommodate Shelburne teams any longer. Shelburne teams winning five out of the eight available division titles in 1994 probably didn’t please Orangeville too much either. This split forced Shelburne Minor Soccer to take some bold steps.

The 1995 season saw Shelburne teams competing at the non-house league level for the first time. We entered our older teams in the Five County Soccer League as well as the Grey-Bruce League and the South-Region Competitive League, which brought into the mix many teams from southwestern Ontario. We also developed our own house league for the younger players. The Club had about 140 players, the teams faired well in their new leagues, the Club had no funds, and the kids had fun.

In 1998, the Club name was changed from the Shelburne Minor Soccer Club to the Shelburne Soccer Club. This change opened the door to the next major step in our history. The adults could finally play.

The 2000 season started a new era for the Shelburne Soccer Club. We entered teams in the challenging Inter-City League, one of them was a men’s team. The Club now has teams competing in three leagues plus our own house league. The players ranged in age from 3 to 50. The most recent season was a success at all levels.

2001 saw Shelburne Soccer Club officially change its name to Shelburne Soccer / Football Club in order to differentiate between the youth and adult teams that it represents. The Club now sported two men's teams and two women's teams in the ICSL.

2002 saw the introduction of an Over - 35 team that played in the Simcoe County Senior Soccer League and the registration continued to grow.

2003 will see the most dramatic change in the last three years. Shelburne Soccer Club will have an adult co-ed house-league for all of those adults that wanted to play soccer, but were unable to travel. It truly has become a club for everyone.
