Welcome to the SHCP Fightin' Irish Cross Country Web page.

One of the most important factors in cross country is the mental side of running.  To be successful you have to believe that you can do it.  Such confidence comes from many things: working hard at practice, preparing yourself by doing the little things, knowing that your teammates and coaches love and support you, and knowing that when things get hard during a race, you will be tough.  This season, everyone on the Irish Cross Country team will be given a License to Believe, so that you can honestly say “I BELIEVE”.

Very Good State Meet Races from Jocelyn and Jackie

Jocelyn Rodriguez and Jackie Flynn, finished off the 2007 Irish Cross Country season with very good races at the State Meet.

Jocelyn was 35th in 19:21.

Jackie was 60th in 19:43.

There were 190 total runners in the race, so the two SHC runners were well ahead of most of the field.  They both executed the race plan well, running a patient first mile and then being aggressive on the 2nd mile.  That put them in the exact position they wanted to be in for the final mile of the season.  It isn't always that you can walk away from the State Meet race happy with your race.  But from the smiles on both Jocelyn and Jackie's faces they were pleased and proud of their performances.

Thanks to all the supporters who came to Fresno to cheer them on!

Pictures from Andy's camera are uploaded in the Albums Section.

If it's Thanksgiving, then it must mean Fresno

2007 marks the 20th year of the California State Meet.  You can read some nostalgia about the 1st State Meet here: http://www.dyestatcal.com/news/xc2007/September/1987%20CC/1121/Summary.htm

Coach Andy has been lucky to attend all 20 years:

- 1987-88 as an athlete for Lowell (150th/156 at the first State Meet, yes that's 7th to last!)

- 1989-1992 as the team manager for UCLA (went to recruit athletes)

- 1993-1997 as an asst. coach at Lowell

- 1998-2007 as the head caoch at SHC

Thanks to Jocelyn and Jackie, his streak of spending Thanksgiving Saturday in Fresno continues.

Good Luck at State_07

Strong Races at CCS

The Irish ran races to be proud of at the CCS Championships at Crystal Springs, Saturday November 10.

The Boys ran an incredible team time of 84:36, making them the fastest team in the Chanman era and probably also school history.  "These guys were 37 seconds faster than the team that went to State Meet two years ago," said Coach Andy Chan, "I am impressed and proud.  We had a patient race plan and it paid off with some phenomenal races."  Thanks to their clutch performances the Irish placed 8th/16 teams after coming into the meet seeded 11th.

The Girls, too, ran solid races that resulted in a team time of 98:36.  That's the 3rd fastest performance in school history behind the league finals and CCS races of the 2001 team (led by Rowbury and Gallagher).  Unfortunately the Irish placed 4th/16 teams, just 10 points behind 3rd place (the final State Meet qualifying spot).  It was the third year in a row that the Irish were 4th, one spot away from State.  "It's disappointing to just miss again," said Chan, "But I certainly am proud of the effort we put forth.  North Monterey County just ran very well.  Especially their 3rd and 4th girls.  Frustrating as it is, all we can do is tip our hat to them.  It may be different faces in the future, but we'll be back to fight again."

But the Irish will still have representation in Fresno on Thanksgiving weekend at the State Meet.  Jocelyn Rodriguez (7th in 18:44) and Jackie Flynn (12th in 19:03) qualified individually for the State Championships.  For Rodriguez, it will be the first State Meet for an athlete who started out running the 800 in track in the 2:50's.  For Flynn, this will be her second State Meet, having competed there as a sophomore.  Flynn, just like in 2005, grabbed the final individual State Meet spot as the 5th individual in 12th place overall.  She was one second ahead of the 6th individual and 13th place so she made it by the narrowest of margins.  Flynn can also be proud that the athlete she beat out for the final State Meet spot came from Sobrato, our nemesis from last season's one point near miss.
