What a Weekend!!

It was an amazing weekend of accomplishments relating to the SHCP Track & Field program this past weekend..

First Reilly Hall and Jocelyn Rodriguez ran at the CCS Trials.  Reilly placed 17th in the 800 (2:25.19) and Jocelyn placed 9th in the 3200 (11:38.63).  Jocelyn's finish qualifies her for the CCS Finals, back in Gilroy next Friday (the day between Baccalaureate Mass and Graduation)!

Later on Saturday evening, Jocelyn was awarded the China Lang Scholarship by the San Francisco Prep Hall of Fame.  At the same awards banquet, Shannon Rowbury '02 was inducted into the SF Prep Hall of Fame.  Shannon was unable to attend, however, because she was preparing for a meet the next day.

The meet was the adidas Track Classic in Carson, CA.  And boy did Shannon prepare well!  She won the 1500 meters in 4:01.61.  That time was almost a 6 second PR and gives her the Olympic A standard (which is 4:07.00).  But most impressively, that time is the 5th fastest time run by an American woman in history!!

Congratulations to all!!

WCAL FINALS - Irish win WCAL Championships in 6 events
2008 WCAL Champions
Coach Chan with the WCAL Champions

The Irish brought their 'A' game to the WCAL Trials and Finals, earning numerous PR's, winning 6 events, qualifying 2 athletes to CCS, and placing 4th in JV Girls and 5th in F/S Boys.

Congratulations to the JV Girls, who scored 66 points to place 4th, the Irish's highest WCAL finish since placing 3rd with 72 points in 2003 (the first year the WCAL had girls).  Leading the way for the JV Girls were champions: Nathalie Hechinger, who won the 1600 (new WCAL JV Girls record) and the 3200 by a combined total time of 0.52 seconds, Emily Chug in the Discus, and the 4X100 Relay team of Jocelyn Manalo, Bria Donaldson, Natasha Cooper, and Viana Larkin.

And also congratulations to the F/S Boys, who scored 33 points to place 5th.  That's the most points for the Irish in the F/S Boys division since the 2001 team scored 40 and that's the highest team finish in the Chanman era.  Leading the way for the F/S Boys were champions: Jarrett Moore in the 800 and Ryan Santiago in the 300 Hurdles.

The Irish had 2 athletes qualify for CCS.  Junior Reilly Hall placed 2nd in the 800 in 2:20.93 to qualify for CCS in track & field for the first time (Reilly has run at CCS twice in cross country).  Senior Jocelyn Rodriguez will run at CCS for the 5th time in her career (three times in cross country and now twice in track & field) as she qualified by beting the CCS time standard, coming in 4th in the 3200 in 11:26.78.

The seniors, running their last meet, also had strong and memorable days:

- Jocelyn Rodriguez - qualified for CCS in the 3200, so it wasn't her last meet.

- Tommy Redmond - a great triple - 4:49.45/2:09.50/56.1.

- Michael Cunningham - sub-5 in the 1600 for the first time (4:59.09).

- Nerissa Martinez - season best in the 1600 by 12 seconds at 5:46.44.

- Sarah Spillane - Improved from 6th to 5th in the 100H, running a season-best 17.37 in her last hurdle race.

- Matt Yee - after just missing Finals in both the 110H and 300H, got one last race as he anchored our 4X400 for the final time, splitting another 56 to cap a great season.

"Overall it was a great way to end the season," said Coach Andy Chan, who is completing his 10th season has head coach at SHCP.  The 129 combined total points is the most since the 2003 season.  "What I liked most is that we were competitive in a variety of events," said Chan, "It's the most league champions I've ever had in WCAL and they were in a variety of events - distance, sprint relay, hurdles, and throwing.  Plus we had finalists in almost every event.  I thank the senior for leading us to a terrific season and I challenge our returning athletes to strive to do even better next year."
