SHARKS FINISH IN THE TOP 13 OUT OF 70 TEAMS AT THE USFA WORLD SERIES
The Sharks '93 traveled to Panama City Beach, FL to compete in the the United States Fastpitch Association (USFA) World Series the week of July 8-15, 2007. The team had an awesome week, coming in 13th out of 70 teams. Teams in the 14U age bracket represented 11 states.
The team played 3 pool games on Monday and Tuesday against quality teams from Texas, Louisiana and Georgia. The pool games allowed the girls to prepare for elimination games that started Wednesday morning. The team won there first two elimination games against the Magic (Atlanta, GA - 9-1) and Centex Slugger (Austin, TX / USFA Texas State Champions - 4-0). By winning these games, the girls earned a day off and didn't have to play at all on Thursday. Friday morning, the Sharks got the Fury '92 from Monroe, LA. The Sharks took a 4-1 lead into the 4th inning only to lose a heartbreaker 5-4. That loss sent the team to the losers bracket, requiring they win the next three games to advance to the gold bracket (final 8 teams). The team won the next two games beating x and then the defending 14U USFA world series champions (Panama City Lady Lightning - 6-3). The team fell to the South Georgia Botz 4-2 to be eliminated.
A number of incredible plays, both offensively and defensively, occured during the week. The team recorded four double plays (Natalie Matos, Chelsea Fagan, Jacquie Shadden, Lindsey Sylvester). Mary Calvert Sammons caught all 8 games and led the team in hitting for the week. Emily Adlich recorded back to back home runs against the the Panama City Lady Lightning. Alyssa Statham, played solid 3rd base and came in to pitch the final game trailing 3-0 to shut down the boltz, allowing only 1 run, the final three innings. Natalie Williams and Julie Davis contributed several key hits for the week.

The sharks then lost in the finals of the winners bracket to the Trussville Red Storm (Champions of the NSA Alabama State tournament) 11-4 forcing the team to beat the Louisiana Patriots, Denham Springs, LA 4-0 in the finals of the losers bracket for an opportunity to play the Red Storm again for the Championship. With their backs against the wall, having to beat the Red Storm twice, the team came together and would not be denied the championship. The Sharks put on a dominating performance beating the Red Storm in the first game 9-0 and then followed that up with an 11-3 win. Those wins were punctuated with several key defensive plays, incredible hitting performances and outstanding pitching. It was a total team effort with significant contributions in the championship run coming from every member of the team.
