SFYAL hosting Cal Ripken 12YO 50/70 PA State Tournament SFYAL will be hosting the Cal Ripken 12-year-old 50/70 PA State Tournament from July 18th to the 21st. This is a great honor for our league and a perfect opportunity to show off our facilities and our great community. An event like this requires a lot of volunteers, especially for field work and snack bar. Please try to make time to come out and lend a hand; even an hour at some point would be very helpful. We’d really like to make sure we have snack bar coverage while Spring-Ford is playing so the parents of those players can cheer on the team. The times we most need help are 9:30 – 12:00 and 1:30 – 4:00 on Saturday and Sunday. Hopefully our guys will advance to the semi’s on Monday and the championship on Tuesday, so we could use help those nights as well. Please contact Shirleen Smiley at smiley794@msn.com for more details. Helpers for field work are most in need at 7:00am to get ready for the day, and then in between games to drag and line. The game schedule will posted on the web site once all the teams are set. We’re also putting together a program for the tournament that will go to all tournament participants and guests. Advertisements can be placed in the book for $50 a page, or $25 for a half page. These ads need to be in by Friday, 7/10. Please contact Scott Smiley (SmileyS@PASD.K12.PA.US) for more information. Tournament Coaches:
First, let me extend my gratitude to each of you and your organizations for participating in our Summer Slam events the last two weekends. We always enjoy hosting this tournament and the great baseball that is played. We can only hope that you enjoyed your respective weekends as well. The only true measure and the best compliment would be the desire to participate in our future events. We hope you do.
Second, I wanted to thank all our volunteers who without their selfless efforts we could not have pulled off what we did the last two weekends. Weather certainly was not our friend, but with a lot of hard work and lots of baseballs we were able to manage. I want to also thank all those who offered to help out from other organizations such as Audubon (Ken O'Neill) and Douglasville (Mike Dekker), and others who were willing to lend a hand or resources to help us get fields ready to play. For our team parents at SFYAL, Chissy Pergine (9's), Diane Lachenmayer (10's), Deb Skrocki (11's), and Shirleen Smiley (12's) who organized our volunteers. Our fathers who worked day and night to get fields ready and not just playable, but in very good to great condition.
Now our champions by division:
9's - Final Four: Phoenixville, Douglasville, Spring-Ford, Lower Merion
Champion: Spring-Ford
Runner Up: Douglasville
10's - Final Four: Audubon, Douglasville, Upper Providence, Spring-Ford
Champion: Upper Providence
Runner Up: Spring-Ford
11's - Final Four: Brookline, Spring-Ford, Lower Merion, East Brandywine
Champion: East Brandywine
Runner Up: Brookline
12's - Final Four: Boyertown, Southern Lehigh, Audubon, Spring-Ford
Champion: Audubon
Runner Up: Spring-Ford
A lot of really great baseball, including an 8-inning championship in the 10's division and Brookline 11's playing in their 1st ever 50/70 tournament reaching the finals. We recognize that not everything was ideal or went the way we wanted it to go, but we tried to make the most appropriate decisions based on the information that we had available to us at the time. We certainly welcome any feedback and alternate solutions for future events. We review this at the end of each tournament season to ensure that we put on a value added tournament experience for you and your organizations. We hope that we represented you well as an organization and we hope to see you again in the coming years.
As for next year, our target dates are the following:
June 17-20 for the 10's and 12's (50/70)
June 24-27 for the 9's and 11's (50/70)
If you think you want to be included next year, please let me know and we will keep you on our invite list. IF you are moving on and you think your organization would like to play, please pass on to me an email address to contact next year.
Thank you again, and congratulations to our champions this year. Good luck in the rest of your tournament season!

Thank you SFYAL Parents To SFYAL Parents: Now with the 2009 Summer Slam event over, yet another highly successful event, I wanted to take a moment to recognize our parents efforts. With so many parents and coaches coming up to me to express their appreciation for how much they enjoyed themselves and the kids had fun playing baseball, it was a very impressive thing to hear. I gladly accepted their praise, but my response was always the same: I asked them to seek out a volunteer and thank them because it was all the volunteers who gave so much of their time that made their experience enjoyable. IF they didn't, allow me to be their messenger. I say this because it is not the type of event that can be done half-hearted. It takes a massive effort to make sure that a family from outside our organization that comes into our community can be witness to what a group of people can do when they take pride in their organization and community. Let me thank all the team moms for organizing each team's parents in helping others. Chrissy Pergine, Diane Lachenmayer, Deb Skrocki, and Shirleen Smiley. Thanks to Mary Shields for the tournament T-shirt sales; wonderful as always. To all the dads (and mom's too) who grabbed a rake, a shovel, hose, bag of field dry, tarps, and any other piece of equipment to make the complex look awesome and in great playing condition. Who can forget Norm Coyne's deforesting of the driveway, thankfully no poison ivy for him! But so many parents helped in ways that I'm sure I even didn't get a chance to see and did it without publicity. I thank each and every one of you for making this event worth being a part of. Thanks to people like Frank Pastella, Jamie Stento, and Dwight White for coming out when they weren't involved other than being a valued member of the organization to lend a hand. We are only as strong as the effort we put in and I can't think of a stronger organization than SFYAL. Coaches, I know there are people that I missed, but please pass on to each of your parents individually my gratitude for their efforts. Thank you for preparing your teams to be so strongly represented and a great group of kids who displayed their own desire to volunteer and also play with unquestionable sportsmanship. A true mark of the impact you have on those kids. It truly is remarkable to see what a strong group of people can do to make an impact on nearly 400 baseball players and countless families who got to witness what a great organization SFYAL is and what it provides for the youth of our community. Thank you all again for a great and phenomenal effort during the 2009 Summer Slam event! Kevin Messerle

Summer Baseball
Are you sad about the end of the regular baseball season? We sure are. So several SFYAL coaches are hosting informal Summer baseball free of charge at the SFYAL facilities in Spring City. There is no registration process. Just show up when you can and play ball. 9 - 12 year olds: Wednesday night pickup baseball games for anyone who wants to play. You don't have to show up every week. Beginning July 1st at 6:00 on Field #1 we'll choose up sides and play ball. Games will follow SFYAL National League rules, with a couple minor exceptions designed to keep the games fair and fun. 6 - 8 year olds: Beginning Wednesday, July 1st, several Coach and Machine Pitch coaches will host instructional baseball on Wednesday nights at 6:00 on Field #4. The goal is to provide "skills and drills" time and then choose up sides for a short "Coach pitch" game. This program will be geared toward players moving into the Machine Pitch and Junior League divisions next year. So games and most drills will be conducted with a hardball, as opposed to a safety ball ('T' ball). If you have any questions, you can contact us at sfyal@comcast.net. Please check back here regularly for updates on fields and times. SFYAL 2009 Raffle Winners
