Simmons named boys' basketball coach at Seventy-First
By Earl Vaughan Jr.
Scholastic sports editor
Seventy-First High School didn't look far to find the replacement for retiring varsity boys basketball coach Bernie Poole. Just one seat down the bench. David Simmons, a Seventy-First graduate and varsity assistant at the school for the last 13 years, was named Poole's replacement Thursday.
The announcement was made by Seventy-First principal Tina Poltrock."We have always been impressed by Coach Simmons," Poltrock said. "He gets along very well with his students and he is very knowledgeable in basketball. We felt he would be someone who could continue to keep our program one of the premiere programs in the state."
Simmons, who has never been a head coach, said "getting the Seventy-First job was the dream of a lifetime. The tradition at Seventy-First is always going to be there," Simmons said. "The ultimate goal is to win a state championship."
Simmons said he doesn't plan any major changes in the program, following in the traditions of his two predecessors, Poole and Pete House. He wants to continue stressing academics, and he would like to join with Falcons football coach Bob Paroli in increasing community involvement in the Seventy-First athletic program.
Simmons graduated from Seventy-First in 1987, playing football under Bobby Poss and basketball under House. Simmons earned his college degree at UNC-Pembroke, graduating in 1992.
He coached at Methodist College for two years under Bob McEvoy, then came to Seventy-First, where he has been ever since. He has coached a number of sports at Seventy-First through the years.
In addition to his job with the basketball team, he serves as first responder for football. Outgoing coach Poole said "Simmons was his choice to get the job."
"David been a hard worker for me," Poole said. "He supported me and has been very loyal to Seventy-First and the basketball program. I wanted a seamless transition. The wheels are running well. Keep them running. Don't break it, don't change."
The Falcons were 22-7 this year, winning the Mid-Southeastern 4-A Conference tournament and reaching the second round of the state playoffs before losing to eventual state champion Wilmington New Hanover.

D - R - I - V - E
D is for Discipline. Discipline is a requirement. Discipline requires consistency of effort and inner strength. 1) Do what has to be done; 2) When it has to be done ; 3) As well as it can be done; and 4) Do it that way ALL THE TIME.
R is for Respect. Respect is the key to learning. Players must first respect their teachers, coaches, teammates, and opponents in order to gain knowledge from their interactions.
I is for Intensity. Nothing reflects more on a program than the intensity level that the team plays with - not only in games, but more importantly in practice. THERE IS NO SUBSTITUTE FOR GUTS!
V is for Vision. Long term goals need to stem from seemingly out of reach dreams and aspirations. We must have the courage to "DREAM BIG". Short term goals are set as part of the immediate plan of achieving long term goals. "Show me a throughly satisfied person and I will show you a failure" - Thomas Edison.
E is for Enthusiasm. The love of the game is infectious. Love basketball! Love hard work! Love success! And share that love with those around you AT ALL TIMES. "Nothing great was ever accomplished without enthusiasm". - Ralph Waldo Emerson.
