The sun was shining brightly. Not a cloud in the blue, blue sky. There was a crisp fall scent in the air. Dedicated Cougar fans decorated the stadium with posters and lots of green and gold balloons. People were busy setting up stands to sell Cougar Spirit Wear and Homecoming Corsages. As kickoff neared, the stands filled with enthusiastic spectators. Their emerald green and gold uniforms were impressive in the bright sun. All players were primed and eager to play. They were competing against the undefeated Crimson Bears. From the time the starting whistle blew, until the clock ran out, it was the perfect Homecoming game. The Cougars worked hard all season and their dedication paid off. They held their ground against theh Crimson Bears. Cougar defense kept the Bears from getting near their end zone. Cougar offense drove the ball hard through the Bears defensive line. The score was tied 0-0 at half-time. Unbelievable! Juneau's team thought they were going to beat the Cougars easily. They were wrong! Half-time activities charged up the crowd even more. The cheerleaders were terrific. They looked prettier than ever. Their jumps were higher, and their stunts unflawed. Homecoming Royalty paraded onto the field. Class floats motored by as the crowd cheered for their favorites. The second half of the game was very exciting. Cougars worked as a team to advance the ball and keep the Crimson Bears from scoring. Everyone was thrilled by the way the game was going. The stadium was filled with Cougar Spirit. Then, as the sun was shining brightly and the crowd worked itself to a fevered pitch... the Cougars scored! Everyone went wild! People were applauding, yelling, hugging, ringing cowbells, and blowing horns. Cheerleaders were leaping sky high! The band punctuated the touchdown with drums, and loud trills. The extra point was good! The score was Service Cougars 7, Juneau Crimson Bears 0. The rest of the game is a blur. The crowd cheered loudly to help the Cougars stay strong. Everyone watched the clock. As the seconds ticked away, the score remained the same. Juneau did not score a single point! When the final buzzer sounded, the team ran to celebrate. The faces of the players were stained with blood, sweat, and tears. They had done it... They defeated the undefeated Crimson Bears!! The team managed to smudge Juneau's perfect record. The Mighty Cougars held their helmets high as they sang their school song. It was a perfect ending to the 2001 football season. Those of us who were lucky enough to be there will remember it always!

COUGRRRRZ ROCK THE LYNX The Cougars hit the football field eager to win on Friday, September 6. They were determined to beat the Dimond Lynx, Alaska's 2001 State Champions. The game kicked off at 6:00 P.M. at Anchorage Football Stadium. Both South Anchorage teams were ready for the challenge. The Dimond Lynx looked sharp... and BIG! The Service Cougars looked sleek, and ready to run with the ball. The game progressed quickly. The scoreboard lit up with one touchdown, then another. By half time the score was Lynx 12 - Cougars 6. When the teams came out of the locker room after half time, it was obvious the Cougars were ready to fight back. They were pumped! The crowed cheered loudly (encouraged by #53 Mike Sweet). Service football players held their helmets high as the kickoff took place. The Cougars rocked the field during third and fourth quarter. Jake Staser made a 40 yard touchdown. Ryan Ersland ran another ball into the endzone soon after. Matt Akers made an interception and kept Dimond from scoring. Paul DeVasConCellos intercepted another Dimond pass. Nick Fuhr made several impressive runs down the field, headed for the endzone, fueled by shear determination. The Cougar defense was equally inspiring. A.J. Randall, Bryan Jones, Billy Ross, Cornelius McCurry and several other Cougars kept the Lynx from scoring any points in the second half of the game. As the crowd cheered, the team worked together to earn a respectful 30 points. It was an awesome game! Final Score: Service Cougars 30 - Dimond Lynx 12 We can't hide our Southside Pride... COUGARRRRZ ROCK!

CONGRATULATIONS COUGARS YOU EARNED A PLACE IN THE 2002 SEASON PLAYOFFS! The Homecoming Game was excellent. We enjoyed every minute. You worked together to clip the Eagles' wings and in the process helped your team mate, Ryan Ersland, reach a goal of his own... over 1000 rushing yards for the 2002 Season. Way to go!! Congratulations Ryan! We are very proud of you and ALL our Cougars who have worked so hard this season.
IT HAS BEEN A WONDERFUL SEASON BE PROUD OF YOUR ACCOMPLISHMENTS... The Cougars have had a wonderful season... great games, fun family events, a trip to New Mexico, cheerleaders for all three teams... We have photo albums full of pictures to remind us of the wonderful people and events that filled our 2002 Season. Please don't dwell on disappointments. Remember instead the bond you formed with your team mates, the hard work you did together to create an awesome team, the goals you set for yourself and surpassed... In July the Cougars only dreamed about the possibilities. Many of those dreams came true this season. Be proud of your accomplishments. You have shown excellent sportsmanship, incredible playing skills, and disciplined attitudes throughout the season. We are very proud of you! It has been an honor to work with you -- as individuals, and as a team. It has been a pleasure to participate in your events, and it has been exciting to watch you play football. Thank you!
The 2002 Fooball Season was a very busy one! Planning began in October 2001 to make the season successful. Booster Club members worked hard to raise money and provide opportunities for our Service Football families. Their hard work paid off in many ways... All three Cougar teams traveled out of the Anchorage area to compete with other teams during the 2002 season. Our Varsity team traveled to Aztec, New Mexico to play a game in September. This was their first trip out of Alaska in three years. It was a wonderful experience! Aztec citizens welcomed our Cougars into their community and did a tremendous job to make the trip memorable. Our Varsity team also traveled to Juneau for a Conference Game. The Cougars received compliments from Airline and Hotel personnel about their excellent behavior on the trip. Our team represented Service High School with honor. JV and C Team traveled to various in-state locations to play games during the 2002 Season... Kenai, Seward, and Wasilla. Our teams played excellent football and Cougar fans showed the communities what Southside Pride is all about. Other wonderful Cougar events also took place. We had great pre-game meals and activities, and a terrific Homecoming Tailgate Party. We look forward to the 2003 Football Season and the opportunities it will offer for our Cougars.
