Senior Little League Baseball Eastern Regional: Scores & Records: 2010 Regional - Game 16

WEST DEPTFORD, NJ – Joe McCarthy went 3-for-4 with five RBI, including his fourth home run of the regional in the form of a grand slam, as Marvine Dutch Gap Little League of Scranton, PA topped Johnston, RI, 11-2, in elimination bracket action at the Senior Little League Baseball Eastern Regional.

McCarthy smacked a grand slam and teammate Mike Watral followed three batters later with a three-run homer to help his own cause. That accounted for all the runs in a seven-run fifth inning that put the game well out of reach. McCarthy’s fourth home run tied a regional record done four times by three players. He is now batting .611 for the regional (11-for-18) with four home runs and 12 RBI, as well as, 10 runs scored.

Watral, meanwhile, gave Marvine Dutch Gap the outing it needed on the mound. Strapped for pitching after winning two elimination games on Monday, Watral, who has caught the other four games in the tourney, pitched a complete game, allowing six hits and one walk with four strikeouts. He threw 95 pitches, 61 of them for strikes. At the plate, he finished 2-for-4 with four RBI.

At 7 p.m. Wednesday, Marvine Dutch Gap will face the loser of the game between South Vineland, NJ and Naamans Little League of Wilmington, DE. Those two teams play later tonight.

Chris Pistacchio went 2-for-3, including a solo home run, to lead Johnston. Johnston’s fourth place finish in the regional equaled the best finish by a Rhode Island team. Johnston was making its third regional appearance in the last four years.
