2009 Regional - Game 18 (Championship game)
WEST DEPTFORD, N.J. – In a week full of instant classics, it was only fitting that the 2009 Senior Little League Baseball Eastern Regional was decided in extra frames.
South Vineland, N.J. became the ninth consecutive New Jersey state champ to win an Eastern Regional title, downing Suffern, N.Y.., 8-6, in nine innings in the first championship round game to go extra innings in the 19 years of regional play at West Deptford.
It was the fourth regional title for South Vineland, which advanced to the Senior Little League World Series in 2001, 2002 and 2003 previously. South Vineland as a program has won 18 of its last 19 and 22 of its last 24 games at West Deptford in regional play. This was the team’s first appearance in West Deptford since 2003, however.
South Vineland will open World Series play on Sunday in Bangor, Maine’s Mansfield Stadium against Italy at 5:30 pm.
Carlos Lebron’s double in top of the ninth broke the 5-5 tie. South Vineland would score two more times in the top half of the inning. But Suffern wasn’t finished.
After consecutive singles with two outs in the bottom half of the ninth, a grounder to short was booted and allowed a run to score and bring the winning run to the plate. But, after Suffern won on a walk-off home run in the eighth Wednesday night over Naamans, Del., it wasn’t to be on Thursday night.
Suffern still had its drama in the seventh. Billy Goldman’s single to center scored Tom Hamner with the tying run, but Nik Kulbaba – who hit the home run to win Wednesday’s game – was thrown out on a bang-bang play at the plate to end the inning and force extra frames.
The nearly three-hour game featured 26 hits, seven errors, 22 strikeouts and a whopping 339 pitches by the four pitchers used.
Lebron and Joe Arce both had three hits for South Vineland and Arce drove in three runs. Lebron was also the winning pitcher, firing 3-2/3 innings of relief.
Goldman had three hits for Suffern and was the losing pitcher, firing five strong innings of relief. He struck out six and did not walk a batter. He held South Vineland pretty much in check until the decisive ninth inning.
Suffern’s runner-up finish was the first regional final appearance by a New York team since 1998. Their consecutive extra inning games made them just the fourth team in 19 years of regional play at West Deptford to have to go extra time in back-to-back appearances.
