SUBJECT: Wild finish sets stage for Senior League Baseball Eastern Regional final on Thursday

WEST DEPTFORD, N.J. – Nik Kulbaba’s first hit of the regional might have been the biggest of his life so far.
Kulbaba drilled the first pitch over the wall in left center field, breaking an 0-for-9 tourney, for a two-run walk-off homer in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift Suffern, N.Y. to a 9-8 win over Naamans Little League of Wilmington, Del. in an elimination game at the Senior Little League Baseball Eastern Regional.
Suffern will face South Vineland, N.J. in the championship round on Thursday beginning at 5 p.m. If Suffern wins the first game, a second will follow 30 minutes later.
Kulbaba’s blast made a winner of Ritchie Glover, who came on in relief to maintain order after Naamans had jumped out to a 7-4 lead and looked to be on its way to its second straight regional final. Glover allowed just two hits in 3-1/3 innings of work and held Naamans scoreless until the eighth when they manufactured a run with a walk, sac bunt, wild pitch and sac fly.
Mike Vanderloo was the hard luck loser for Naamans. He had shut down Suffern over five innings of work prior to Kulbaba’s blast. He allowed just two hits and two runs.
Jared Carney and Jesse Ellis each had two hits for Naamans and Justin Signora drove in three runs.
Billy Goldman had two hits of Suffern’s eight hits.
Earlier in the night, Naamans staved off elimination by outlasting Barrington, R.I., 7-4. Kevin Czachorowski came on to pitch the final inning and earn his second save in as many days. Jared Carney had two of Naamans’ five hits in the win. The Delaware state champs took advantage of five Barrington errors, scoring four of their seven runs in the unearned variety.
Brendan McNaught had two hits and two RBIs for Barrington, which finished fourth in the regional – the best finish by a Rhode Island team in the 19-year history of regional play in West Deptford.
In tomorrow’s final, South Vineland will be taking two streaks into the game. South Vineland as a program has won 17 of its last 18 and 21 of its last 23 games at West Deptford in regional play. New Jersey state has won eight consecutive regional titles going back to the first of three straight titles for South Vineland in 2001. 2003 was the last time a New Jersey state representative lost a game in regional play – that was South Vineland losing to Cambridge, Md., 10-5. South Vineland came out of the elimination bracket that year to beat Cambridge twice – the last time a team has come back to win twice on the final day.
New York’s last regional title came in 1995 when Haverstraw won it. It is the first regional final appearance by a New York team since 1998.
