Naamans (Wilmington), Del. escapes with 7-6 win over St. Mary’s, Pa. in elimination game at regionals
WEST DEPTFORD, N.J. – Kevin Czachorowski recorded a hairy save, pitching out of a jam in the bottom of the seventh as Naamans Little League of Wilmington, Del. topped St. Mary’s, Pa., 7-6, in an elimination bracket game at the Senior Little League Baseball Eastern Regional.
St. Mary’s trailed 7-1 in the sixth inning, but scored three times in the sixth and twice in the seventh to pull within a run. But with runners at second and third in the seventh and two outs, Czachorowski coaxed Kevin Hoy into a ground out to end the game.
Jared Carney earned the win for Naamans, working the first five innings and throwing 60 pitches. He was lifted in the sixth to conserve him for later in the week, but it almost turned around on Naamans as St. Mary’s rallied.
Collin Cassidy’s three-run pinch-hit home run in a four-run fifth wound up being big for Naamans. That and a baserunning blunder at third base by St. Mary’s to end the sixth were probably the two decisive plays in the game.
Kyle Menchaca had two of Naamans’ seven hits and scored twice and had two RBIs. Hoy had two hits and three RBIs for St. Mary’s.
Naamans, last year’s regional runner-up, will face either Weston, Mass. or Barrington, R.I. in another elimination bracket game on Wednesday at 5 p.m. The winner of that game faces Suffern, N.Y. at 8 p.m. in another elimination game.
