Mussafer fires first no-hitter in 19 years of regional play to lift Weston, Mass. to win
WEST DEPTFORD, N.J. – Michael Mussafer fired the first no-hitter in 19 years of regional play at West Deptford to lead Weston, Mass. to a 2-0 win over Brooklyn-Killingly, Conn. in an elimination game at the Senior Little League Baseball Eastern Regional on Monday night.
Mussafer threw just 79 pitches, walking two and striking out five. He faced one more than the minimum number of batters in his second appearance of the regional. In his first appearance of the tourney, Mussafer allowed four runs in 1/3 of an inning of work Friday against Naamans Little League of Wilmington, Del. But it was a far different story on Monday.
He threw 50 of his 79 pitches for strikes, although he almost lost it if not for a diving catch by center fielder Nick Neu to end the fourth inning.
Mussafer outdueled Jack Weaver, who was the tough luck loser for Brooklyn-Killingly. He allowed just three hits and one unearned loss in an equally impressive performance on a hot muggy night.
Weston scored both of its runs in the sixth. The first coming on a perfect suicide squeeze by pinch-hitter Gage Hartman. The second came on a throwing error later in the inning.
Ironically, Mussafer was the third pitcher to carry a no-hitter late into the game on Monday. Two earlier no-hit bids were broken up to lead off the fifth inning on Monday afternoon.
Weston will face Barrington, R.I. on Tuesday afternoon at approximately 2:30 p.m. in another elimination game.
