South Vineland, N.J. pushes across single run to win pitcher’s duel, 1-0, over St. Mary’s, Pa.
WEST DEPTFORD, N.J. – Allen Rivera broke up Ben Daghir’s no-hit bid in the fifth and hustled home on a wild play for the game’s only run as South Vineland, N.J. topped St. Mary’s, Pa., 1-0, in a winner’s bracket game at the Senior Little League Baseball Eastern Regional on Monday afternoon.
Rivera singled through the left side to open the inning for South Vineland’s first hit of the game. Moved to second on a balk and third on a sac bunt. Elijah Carter struck out on a pitch in the dirt, but when the throw went to first, Rivera raced up and barely beat the tag at the plate with a great slide to the outside.
Andrew Biggs made that run stand up, firing a four-hit shutout with eight strikeouts and just one walk. He threw 86 pitches in the complete game effort as South Vineland (15-1, 2-0 Regional) moved to the winner’s bracket final on Tuesday at 10 a.m. The three-time regional champs will face Suffern, N.Y., a 4-1 winner over Barrington, R.I. earlier in the day.
Ricky Pearsall had two of St. Mary’s four hits on the day. Daghir wound up working 5-2/3 innings before hitting the pitch count maximum, allowing just two hits and striking out nine.
St. Mary’s (14-2) will play a 12 noon elimination game on Tuesday against an opponent to be determined.
