WEST DEPTFORD, N.J. – Naamans Little League of Wilmington, Del. used a five-run second inning and a solid pitching effort by Mike LaPlante to eliminate host District NJ-15 champion West Deptford, N.J., 10-2, in action at the Senior Little League Baseball Eastern Regional on Sunday.
The start of the game was delayed three hours after torrential rains early Sunday morning dumped nearly three inches of rain on Union Field. Tournament officials still hope to be able to complete the day’s four-game schedule.
Naamans jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first when LaPlante helped his own cause with a home run to left. West Deptford got the run right back, however, on an RBI single by Brandon Thayres.
Naamans broke the game open in the second, though, with a five-spot. Mike Annone had the big hit in the inning, a two-run double to give the Delaware champions a 4-1 lead. Annone finished 2-for-4 with four RBIs in the win.
Meanwhile, LaPlante held West Deptford to just one hit – Thayres single in the first – for the rest of his time on the hill. He left with two outs in the seventh after hitting the pitch count maximum of 95. He struck out four and walked five in his 98-pitch effort. A two-out walk in the seventh kept him from logging a complete game. Jarred Carney came on to record the final out.
Naamans will return to action on Monday at 10 a.m. against North Caroline/Denton, Md. in another elimination bracket game. The winner of that game plays another elimination game at 5 p.m. Monday.
