Big first inning lifts South Vineland, N.J. past Calais, Maine at Senior Little League Baseball Eastern Regional
WEST DEPTFORD, N.J. – Chris Bell had two doubles and a home run and South Vineland, N.J. tied a regional record with a 10-run first inning on its way to a 16-1 win over Calais, Maine, in the Senior Little League Baseball Eastern Regional on Saturday night.
Bell hit a two-run homer in the third to cap off his four RBI night. Andrew Biggs smacked a two-run shot in the first inning to get the scoring started. When the first inning was over, South Vineland already held a 10-0 lead.
Biggs drove in three runs as did Holvin Figueroa, who went 3-for-4 on the night. Calais’ lone run came on a solo homer by Jordan Perry.
The win was South Vineland’s 15th in its last 16 regional games. The New Jersey state champs won the regional title in 2001, 2002 and 2003, but were making their first regional appearance since 2003.
Chris Lopez earned the win in relief, allowing just one hit in three innings of work.
South Vineland will face St. Mary’s, Pa. at 8 p.m. Sunday. Calais will face Brooklyn/Killingly, Conn. in an elimination game at 2 p.m. Sunday.
