2009 Regional - Game 5
WEST DEPTFORD, N.J. – Nik Kulbaba struck out 10 in a complete-game effort and survived a seventh-inning scare as Suffern, N.Y. topped North Caroline, Md., 4-2, at the 2009 Senior Little League Baseball Eastern Regional on Saturday.
Kulbaba hit the 95-pitch limit in his final batter, but Charles Squires lined into a double play with runners at first and second to end the ball game. Kulbaba walked one and did not allow an earned run in picking up the win.
Suffern jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning as Kulbaba’s brother Dominick helped his cause with an RBI single to cap off the inning. North Caroline got one run back in the fourth on a throwing error, ending a string of eight straight retired by Kulbaba in the process. Meanwhile, North Caroline starter Cameron Graham settled in after the rocky first inning.
Trailing by three entering the final frame, the Maryland champs got the first two runners on to open the inning. What looked to be a game-ending double play was booted by Suffern, plating Tyler Usilton to make it a 4-2 game. But with the tying run on, Squires’ liner was converted into a double play at second to end the game.
Suffern will face the West Deptford, NJ-Barrington, RI winner at 5 p.m. Sunday. North Caroline/Denton, MD drops into the elimination bracket and will play at 10 a.m. Monday.
