2009 Regional - Game 2
Weston, Mass. handles Naamans, Del., 10-5, in second game of 2009 Senior League Baseball Eastern Regional
WEST DEPTFORD, N.J. – Robert Charpie scattered six hits in 6-2/3 innings of work to lead Weston, Mass. to a 10-5 win over Naamans Little League of Wilmington, Del. in opening round action at the 2009 Senior Little League Baseball Eastern Regional on Friday night.
Charpie pitched the first four innings and then was lifted in the fifth for a reliever. But after Naamans plated five runs in the inning to cut the lead to 7-5, Charpie came back and slammed the door, retiring seven of the last nine batters he faced.
Weston jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second without the benefit of a hit. Four walks, a catcher’s interference and a couple of wild pitches proved costly to Naamans in the inning. Weston made it 7-0 in the fourth with a four-spot, with Charpie helping his own cause with an RBI double.
Naamans cut it to 7-5, the big blow coming when Mike Annone came off the bench to rip a three-run opposite field double over the outfielder’s head in right.
But Naamans couldn’t hold it there as Weston scored three more in the bottom half of the fifth and Charpie shut the two-time defending Delaware state champions down the rest of the way.
Weston’s Nolan Neu was 2-for-3, while Naamans’ Jared Carney and Kevin Czachorowski each had two hits in a losing effort.
Weston will face St. Mary’s, Pa. at 1 p.m. on Saturday, while Naamans will drop into an 11 a.m. elimination bracket game on Sunday.
