WEST DEPTFORD, NJ - Gage Mick bounced back from a rocky first inning to strike out 11 as North Cumberland, NJ earned a spot in the championship round with an 8-3 win over Du Bois, PA at the Senior Little League Baseball Eastern Regional on Tuesday night.
Mick retired eight in a row at one point, settling down after throwing 26 pitches in each of the first two innings. Du Bois got to him for a pair of runs in the first inning on a two-run double by Dante DeSantis.
North Cumberland counterpunched in the bottom half of the frame, however, with a four-spot. The first six batters reached base for North Cumberland, four of them via hits, as nine batters went to the plate in the inning. Barry Larro got them on the board with an RBI single to plate Mick and make it 2-1. Chet Gofrey, who is now 6-for-9 in the regional, smacked a two-run double to make it 3-1 and moved up to third on a wild relay throw. Andrew Owens followed with an RBI single up the middle to make it 4-1.
The teams both scored single runs in the second, but North Cumberland scored single runs in the third, four and sixth to put it away.
Brandon Palumbo had three of Du Bois’ four hits on the night. Owens finished 3-for-3 for North Cumberland. Jack Tyler picked up two more RBI on the night to raise his total to a regional-leading 13.
The New Jersey state champions have now won 23 consecutive games in regional play at West Deptford. New Jersey has won the last seven regional titles. North Cumberland will wait until Thursday, playing at 5 pm against whoever comes out of Wednesday trio of teams in the elimination bracket. Should the elimination bracket team win the first game on Thursday, a second would immediately follow.
Du Bois will face the winner of the Naamans, DE – Wappinger, NY game at 8 pm Wedneday night.
