2008 Regional - Game 3
WEST DEPTFORD, NJ – Andrew Owens delivered a pair of two-run hits to back a strong pitching outing by Gage Mick as North Cumberland, NJ topped Gloucester, MA, 7-2, in the final game of the first day of play at the 2008 Senior Little League Baseball Eastern Regional on Friday night. Mick pitched six shutout innings and allowed just two hits. He struck out eight and walked three before giving way to the bullpen in the seventh. Mick’s night ended on his 94th pitch with a tailor-made 4-6-3 double play to end the sixth. The win was the 21st straight win by a New Jersey state champion at the West Deptford regional and the 32nd in the last 33 games played by those state champions. New Jersey state winners have won the last six regional titles, earning a bid to the World Series in Bangor, ME. Gloucester pitcher Taylor Burbine cruised into the third inning, recording five of his first seven outs by strikeout and holding North Cumberland without a hit through 2-1/3 innings of work. But then he lost the strike zone and struggled through a 45-pitch third. He walked the bases loaded and then forced home the game’s first run when he walked Chet Godfrey on a 3-2 pitch – the eighth of the at-bat. The very next batter, Jack Tyler, came through with North Cumberland first hit of the night, a single to left to score a pair and make it 3-0. Owens broke it open on the very next pitch with a two-run double to left center to make it 5-0 in favor of North Cumberland. He broke through again in the fifth, smashing a two-run single that one-hopped off the wall in right to add insurance. Gloucester broke the shutout on the seventh when Makenzie Quinn hit a slow roller through the right side to score Brett Cahill. After a pitching change, an infield single by Lucas Ilges scored Santo Lograsso to cut it to 7-2. But Darren Fischer settled down to get the final two outs via the strikeout to end the late threat. North Cumberland will face Ellsworth, Maine in an 8 pm match-up Saturday night. Gloucester moved into the elimination bracket for a 3 pm
