Thursday, August 10 2006 Regional - Game 22 WEST DEPTFORD, NJ – Matthew Marzzola homered in consecutive at-bats in the second and third innings to help Bloomfield, NJ to a 13-5 win over Camden-Wyoming, DE at the 2006 Senior Little League Baseball Eastern Regional and earn a trip to the Senior Little League World Series in Bangor, ME beginning Sunday. Bloomfield, the sixth straight representative from New Jersey to earn a spot in the World Series, will take on Brussels, Belgium at 5:30 pm on Sunday at Mansfield Stadium. Marzzola, hitting seventh in Bloomfield’s order, hit a solo shot to left in the second and added a two-run blast to center in the third. He is the 11th player in 16 years of regional play at West Deptford to homer twice in a game. He is the sixth player to ever homer in consecutive at-bats, including the third week, and the fourth to do so in consecutive innings. Marzzola’s second blast came in the midst of a five-run third that broke a 2-1 game wide-open. After Bloomfield had posted single runs in the first and second, Camden-Wyoming got on the board with an RBI single by Jimmy Brittingham in the third. The RBI was Brittingham’s 15th of the regional, setting a new regional record. For Delaware, it was just a case of too many games in too many days. Camden-Wyoming was playing its eighth game in seven days. Because of its draw in the bracket and the fact that the Delaware representative won its opener on Friday and lost on Saturday, it wound up playing on all seven days of the regional, including a doubleheader Wednesday night. The eight games is a new record for a team in the regional. Two teams previously had to play seven before in getting to the title round. In all, Camden-Wyoming staved off elimination five times to make it to the championship round, the first team to won five elimination games in one regional. Marzzola finished 3-for-3 with a pair of runs scored and four RBI on the evening. Jason Chesterman was also 3-for-3 with four RBI. Bloomfield’s Eric Szuhany pitched the first five innings to earn the win. He was strong through the first four innings, fading in the fifth when he allowed four runs. Kevin Miller came on to pitch the final two innings and seal the victory. Camden-Wyoming’s Mario Orlando took the loss. After two outstanding pitching performances earlier in the regional, Orlando came back for a third start on just one day’s rest. However, he allowed eight hits in 2-1/3 innings. Five of the seven runs he allowed were earned.
