Wednesday, August 9 2006 Regional - Game 21 WEST DEPTFORD, NJ – Camden-Wyoming, DE scored five times in the top of the sixth to break open a tight game on its way to a 11-4 win over West Deptford, NJ on Wednesday night and advance to the championship round of the 2006 Senior Little League Baseball Eastern Regional. Camden-Wyoming will face Bloomfield, NJ on Thursday for the right to go to the Senior Little League World Series in Bangor, ME, which gets underway Sunday. The first scheduled championship round game begins at 5 pm on Thursday. Bloomfield is unbeaten in the double-elimination regional. If Camden-Wyoming wins that game, another will follow approx. 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first game. The two teams have not yet met in the regional. Camden-Wyoming will set a tournament record by playing its eighth game of the regional tomorrow and will try to become only the third team in 16 years of regional play at West Deptford to win a regional title out of the elimination bracket. However, the two previous teams – South Vineland in 2003 and Lewisburg, PA in 1997 – lost in the winner’s bracket final and had a short stint in the elimination bracket. Camden-Wyoming has been putting off elimination since Sunday and has now won five consecutive elimination bracket games, including two on Wednesday. Bloomfield will try to continue a streak of New Jersey champions. The New Jersey state champ has won the Eastern Regional and advanced to the World Series in each of the last five years. South Vineland, which Bloomfield beat in the state final this year, won three in a row in 2001, 2002 and 2003. Freehold Township won the regional title in 2004 and 2005. Jimmy Brittingame earned the win for Camden-Wyoming, which had to get a complete game effort from him if it wanted any shot on Thursday. Brittingham went the distance, scattering four hits. He walked seven and struck out eight, but didn’t let West Deptford bunch anything together to gain a whole lot of momentum. Solo home runs by Camden-Wyoming’s Jeffrey Gravatt and Will Ross gave the Delaware representative a 3-2 lead in the top of the fifth. But Steve Jakubowski responded with a two-run home run to left in the bottom half of the fifth to give West Deptford the lead back at 4-3. The home run was just the second hit of the game for West Deptford but was enough to put the host District champs back in front. But Camden-Wyoming had an answer of its own in the top of the sixth. After John Lust grounded out to open the inning, a walk and three straight singles tied the game and loaded the bases. Ryan Contino’s RBI single just off the glove of a diving West Deptford infielder tied the score. Then, with the bases loaded, Jimmy Brittingham walked to force in the go-ahead run. The RBI was Brittingham’s 14th of the tournament to tie a regional record and signaled the end of the night on the mound for Scott Renauro. Greg McKee then beat the throw at first on a potential double-play ball to allow Contino to score from third and make it a 6-4 game. Camden-Wyoming, which has played every day of this regional since it began last Friday because of its path through the elimination bracket, was in control from there. Camden-Wyoming, which suffered its only loss of the regional to West Deptford on Saturday, jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second on Gravatt’s sac fly. West Deptford took the lead in the third, however, in one of the weirdest innings you’ll see. The host District NJ-15 champs scored twice without the benefit of a hit or the ball leaving the infield. Two walks and a hit by pitch loaded the bases with one out. Scott Renauro hit a bouncer to third that Camden-Wyoming tried to turn into a 5-2-3 double play. The relay at first was too late to get Renauro at first. Meanwhile, Steve Jakubowski never broke stride around second and beat the throw back to the plate to tie the game, 1-1. Later in the same inning with the bases still loaded, a grounder to first was booted, allowing Jon Leise to score from first. Camden-Wyoming second baseman Will Ross alertedly picked up the ball and threw home to nail Renauro at the plate, trying to again score from second. However, West Deptford had itself a 2-1 lead as the inning came to a close. Ross and Gravatt each had three hits for Camden-Wyoming.
