2006 Regional - Game 20

WEST DEPTFORD, NJ – For an inning, it looked like a miraculous turnaround. But when the dust settled, the result was similar.

Camden-Wyoming survived a four-run first inning by Auburn, MA and rallied for an 11-6 win in an elimination bracket contest at the 2006 Senior Little League Baseball Eastern Regional at Union Field on Wednesday night.

Camden-Wyoming advances to face West Deptford in a second game tonight (Wednesday) beginning at 8 pm for the right to move onto Thursday’s championship round.

Auburn, MA, after losing to Camden-Wyoming, 16-0, on Friday night and nearly getting no-hit in the process, set what is thought to be a regional record with six straight hits to open the game to jump out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first. It could have been worse had it not been a great play by Camden-Wyoming shortstop Greg McKee, who made a back-hand stab of a line drive up the middle and turned it into an unassisted double play with the bases loaded to end the inning.

Camden-Wyoming finally came around in the middle innings, scoring once in the third, five times in the third and three times in the fifth to turn a four-run deficit into a five-run lead. The Delaware champs got on the board with an RBI fielder’s choice by Alex Jones in the third.

In the fourth, however, Camden-Wyoming exploded. Three straight doubles by Josh Harris, John Lust and Jones were in the heart of a five-run fourth that saw Camden-Wyoming send 10 batters to the plate and take a 6-4 lead. Camden-Wyoming added three unearned runs in the fifth to pad the lead and take away what little air might have been left in Auburn, which had won elimination games on three consecutive days to get to Wednesday’s contest.

Auburn’s Jon Leroux left the regional, however, with a parting shot, or perhaps two. Leroux homered in the fifth and seventh innings to become the fourth player in regional history – and second this week – to homer in consecutive at-bats. It also gave him four home runs in the regional, which tied a regional record. Shippensburg, PA’s David Orndorff hit four home runs in a regional in consecutive years in 1992 and 1993 to set the mark. Leroux finished the day 3-for-4 with 3 RBI.

Camden-Wyoming got two hits each from Greg McKee, Will Ross, Josh Harris, Eric Long and Ryan Contino to pace its 14-hit attack.
