Tuesday, August 8 2006 Regional - Game 17 WEST DEPTFORD, NJ – Chris Halliday got himself into and then pitched out of a bases loaded, no out jam in the bottom of the seventh to keep Auburn, MA alive at the 2006 Senior Little League Baseball Eastern Regional, eliminating South Caroline, MD, 3-2, Tuesday afternoon at Union Field. Auburn, MA, which staved off elimination for the third consecutive day, advances to face either Camden-Wyoming, DE or Montoursville, PA at 5 pm Wednesday. Those teams play later this afternoon in an elimination contest. The winner of Wednesday’s 5 pm game will have to play again at 8 pm on Wednesday. In the seventh, South Caroline’s John Northam led off with a single to left. Justin Towers followed with a bloop just inside the left field line to put runners at first and second. Tyler Bennent followed with another bloop, this one just inside the right field line, to load the bases. Halliday retired the next hitter, Grant Harrison, on a liner to center that the runners had to hold on for the first out of the inning. He then struck out Eric Karge for the second out of the inning and got James Dunn to ground out to third to end it. Halliday, who was knocked out in the third inning Friday night after allowing 10 runs on 10 hits and didn’t have much defensive support against Camden-Wyoming, DE, was a different pitcher on Tuesday and his defense was much more reliable. After Auburn committed eight errors in the loss on Friday, it committed only one on Tuesday as Halliday scattered 11 hits and allowed just one earned run. He struck out just two, but got 14 ground ball outs that his defense handled. That added up to 11 runners left on base by South Caroline. Auburn scored all of its runs in the top of the first inning. Jon Leroux got the scoring started when he smacked a two-run home run to left field into a stiff wind to give the Massachusetts representatives a 2-0 lead. Auburn tacked on an unearned run later that inning to make it a 3-0 lead. South Caroline countered with two in the bottom of the second. A one-out walk and a double by James Dunn, followed by Auburn’s lone error, loaded the bases. That set the stage for an RBI single by No. 9 hitter Ryan Blanchfield that plated the first Maryland run. Blanchfield was perfect on the day, going 3-for-3 with an RBI. Dale Payne followed with an RBI groundout, but Halliday escaped further trouble two batters later with a ground out to second. Keith Latham was perfect on the day, collecting four of Auburn’s seven hits. He was 4-for-4 with a run scored that wound up being the game-winner. James Dunn was the tough-luck loser for South Caroline. Dunn did not walk a batter and struck out seven in a complete game effort.
