Lifetime bragging rights around the city of Shelton are also up for grabs. Three Shelton natives representing three different NEC teams will begin battling today at New Britain Stadium in what is the collegiate swan song for two of them. Central Connecticut State second baseman Matt Memoli is the host. Quinnipiac second baseman Randy Gress plays with the favorite. And Monmouth pitcher Brett Conner is the sentimental pick. "Me, Brett and Randy have been best friends since we were like 11 or 12 years old," Memoli said. "And we've been playing together since that age, too." Memoli, a senior, and Conner, a junior, attended Shelton High, though the latter also spent a post-graduate year at St. Thomas More in Oakdale, Conn. Gress, a senior, went to Notre Dame in Fairfield, but played American Legion and on other summer teams with the other two. "It's weird. Before the game, we'll talk. And then during the game, it's a different situation. We're playing against each other; we're enemies," Gress said with a grin. "Then after the game's over, we call each other up and 'good game' or whatever. It's a good experience." The double-elimination tournament begins today. Fourth-seeded Central Connecticut (23-24, 14-14) takes on top-seeded Quinnipiac (28-16-1, 21-7) at noon while Monmouth -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Advertisement -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (33-21-1, 17-1) and Mount St. Mary's (35-20, 21-7) meet in the second game. The Bobcats, who won the event in 2005, lead the NEC in batting average and home runs. Gress, who hit .305 with 12 homers and 45 RBIs in the regular season, was a big reason why. "Our goal from the beginning of the year was to make it here, to win the regular season and go on to the NEC's and win that," said Gress, who is fifth on Quinnipiac's career homer list with 28 and is also a two-time Connecticut Post male athlete of the year. "So far, so good." Central slipped past defending champion Sacred Heart for the final berth in the tourney, but has plenty of postseason experience on its roster. "I've been to regionals two years already," Memoli said. "Those are some the greatest experiences of my life." Conner, a junior, would love to leave his home state with a championship. "I'm the only one of us without the ring so far. Quinnipiac won it two years ago (2005) and Central won it the year before that (2004)," Conner said. "It's my turn, definitely." After undergoing shoulder surgery on Dec. 5, 2005, Conner missed all of the 2006 season and most of the current one while recovering. He finally returned to the mound May 9 against Rutgers and pitched one inning. "I just got (cleared to play) a month ago," Conner said. "I finally got my inning against Rutgers, and I'm working off that." Today's first game could be a low-scoring affair thanks to two more local stars. Trumbull's Andy Mayer (8-2, 3.33) will start for Quinnipiac against West Haven native Matt Gianani (3-6, 3.10). Gianani has already thrown three shutouts for Central this season and is very familiar with the Bobcats' lineup. Whatever the outcome of today's games, not to mention the tension-filled battles on tap Friday and Saturday, Gress, Memoli and Conner expect to enjoy their time on and off the diamond. The trio only wishes another one of their friends from Shelton could be on hand to join in the fun. Dan Orlovsky, the former standout quarterback at Shelton High and UConn, is busy trying to move up the depth chart with the NFL's Detroit Lions and is unable to attend. "He's part of our clique. We call ourselves the true entourage," joked Conner, referring to the HBO hit series. "We roll around with him and he wishes he could be here." |
