Minor Atoms Take 1st in Vaughan Tourney
SSE Wild Minor Peewee 2 Win second tournament of the year
SOUTH/SOUTHEAST WILD VICTORY
The SSE Wild MPW2 team won their second tournament of the season at the Vaughan Marshall Drewnowsky Memorial Tournament this past weekend (01/29/06). The boys showed amazing character and went undefeated in the tournament despite adversity, injuries, very tough opposition and a short bench.
In the Semi Finals the SSE team was down 2 1 with less than 5 minutes to go, against a very determined West London team, when they took a 5 minute hitting from behind penalty (the penalized player had only 1 minor penalty all season - earlier in the same game). Facing elimination and playing shorthanded the boys rallied and tied it with 4 minutes to go and then won it with just over a minute remaining on an even strength goal.
In the Finals the Wild team was eager to defend their Championship from the previous year, but faced a very strong Waterloo team, who had earned their spot in the final by soundly beating the only other undefeated team in the tournament, in their Semi Final game.
The final was a back and forth affair for the first 2 periods as the Wild had a 2 0 lead only to see Waterloo tie it with 2 goals in under a minute in the second period. The third period produced no goals although the Wild had the better of the play.
The first 5 minute overtime was played 4 on 4 and saw the Wild outshoot the Waterloo team 6 to 1, including great stops by the Waterloo goalie on 3 consecutive shots from face offs in the Waterloo end with just seconds remaining.
The second overtime was down to 3 on 3. The SSE boys were all over the Waterloo end and finally scored with just over a minute remaining on a great individual effort by Kyle Dann to get the puck deep, retain control, walk out from behind only to be stopped but Chris Carriero jumped in from the point and wacked it home for the win.
The SSE Wild MPW2 team would like to congratulate West London for a very gritty effort and hard fought game in the Semis and to Waterloo for a super game in the finals, no heads should be hanging on these teams! Like we tell our boys: We go to tournaments to have fun and play new and better teams so we can improve ourselves. This weekend we did everything we set out to do because of great competition!
