Nathan Grey - Wallaby International

During a recent trip to Australia Coach Steve was lucky enough to catch up over a cup of tea with one of his favorite Wallaby International's, Nathan Grey. Nathan has been a great supporter of the club since it was formed. A good friend of Eugene, Jo and the Marchese boys, Nathan loves hearing about the continued growth and development of the club and our kids.

Coach Steve. Thanks for taking the time out to catch up. I need to ask you the standard Wallaby profile questions - i hope they aren't too difficult to answer.

Do you have a nickname?

Greysie. I know - it is a bit weak.

What is your favorite position?

Inside Centre for the Wallabies. When I was at school I played #8. But I always wanted to be a winger - but didn't quite have enough speed.

What is your best Rugby memories?

1999 World Cup and the 2003 World Cup were definitely highlights. Also being part of the 2001 Wallabies squad that beat the British Lions for the first time in 12 years in 2001.

Greatest Rugby Disappointment?

Not having grown up in San Diego I never got to wear the famous San Diego Wallabies Youth Rugby Jersey!!!

Who is your favorite Rugby Player?

Growing up in Queensland I have always loved the big names of Queensland rugby - John Eales, Michael Lynaugh - there are so many. But my most favorite player is now coaching with the San Diego Wallabies, Jason McVeigh. I never met him but I have heard (from you) he is quite a legend.

What have you been doing this summer?

I am traveling a lot between Japan where I am coaching and Australia. Looking forward to the beginning of the new Super 15 season.

Marc

Marc, how long have you been playing Rugby?

Marc: I started with the Wallabies when I was 3, now I'm 4, so... one year playing with the Wallabies... but I have been playing rugby with you (dad) since before I could walk.

And there are pictures to prove it, right?  Now, on to the next question. What is your favorite position?

Marc: Scrum half

Who is your favorite rugby player?

Marc: George Gregan!!! He used to be the scrum half for the Wallabies and also was the captain after John Eales... I want to have his hair cut.

Now, what is your best rugby memory?

Marc: What's a memory?

When you remember a moment that has taken place in the past.   You know how after doing something fun you always ask me "remember when this or that?"? Well, the "this or that" you remember, is a memory.

Marc: Then my best rugby memory is scoring tries against you (dad), and playing touch with my friends and with my cousins.

What have you been up to this summer?

Marc: Lot's of things. Playing baseball and watching the Padres, and traveling to Barcelona to see my uncles, and my cousins and my grandparents, and playing rugby and soccer with my cousins, and having lots of fun!

Good. Do you have any nicknames?

Marc: Yes. Marcky-Marc, Muscles and Marcowsky

Me: What's your best rugby blooper?

Marc: What's a Blooper?

When you screw up and it makes you or others laugh. Do you remember a time when you screwed up while playing rugby and we had a good laugh?

Marc: When I missed a pass and the ball hit my nose and knocked me down. (And after seeing the look of surprise on my face)...  Well, I cried at first, but now I think it's funny.

Okeeeey... Let's move on. What's the best thing about playing for the Wallabies?

Marc: Playing touch with my friends and having a BBQ

Who's your favorite SD Wallaby team mate?

Marc: All of them!!

Boy, you should run for office...

Marc: What's "running for office?"

Never mind. It's grown up stuff. Now it's time to really turn off the lights. Thank you for answering these questions. Was it fun?

Marc: Yes!!

Are you ready to go to sleep now?

Marc: Yes... Dad?

Good night.

Marc: Good night, dad.

By the way, before I resorted to the interview, I tried reading the Wallabies Newsletter as his bedtime story. You'll be pleased to know that it must be very exciting because it didn't work as a sleep-inducing tactic. When I read to him that Coach Steve had had lunch with John Eales, the old Wallabies captain, his comment back, verbatim, was "Wow! Really? Next time, can he have lunch with George Gregan and can I go too?"
