Call for Board Members and Volunteers

Dear Families of SDLL,

I want to take a moment to thank everyone for the participation in the 2015 SDLL Fall Ball season. Mother Nature may have done her best to interfere, but we still managed to play some great baseball.

Before we begin to turn our attention to the 2016 seasons, I want to take a moment and recognize some members for their support of SDLL. First, I would like to thank Jill Simpson for her years of service to South Durham Little league, including the last year as President of the league. We wish her luck with her new opportunity, even though we are disappointed Jill has chosen to dedicate the next phase of her life to a sport other than baseball. She did a wonderful job as player-agent and president guiding SDLL through some of its most successful years. Good Luck Jill.

I would also like to thank Marc Clifford, Kelly Budzinski, Erica Caveney and Shana Riley for their service on the board over the last couple of years. Managing a growing league takes a special amount of dedication and all of their efforts are appreciated.

Turning our attention to 2016, as you are aware, SDLL is an organization that is made up of volunteers. We all volunteer for different reasons and in different capacities, but every volunteer contributes to our success. As a coach, I started every season with an e-mail talking about how it takes more than a coach to run a successful team. The more parents that got involved, the better the team would perform. As league president, I can tell you the same is true. The more parents we can get involved, the better the league we can have.

I am asking you to consider joining the SDLL board this probably don't have time for it, it may be out of your comfort zone, but I assure is SO worth it! We are all SDLL and we are all an important part of this COMMUNITY!

To nominate yourself or someone else you believe can help, please follow this link. The board has a number of important roles to fill. Roles that will help shape the way we function as a league, in our attempts to provide your children with the best experience possible. These roles require time and dedication, but they do not require a deep knowledge of baseball. I sincerely help you will consider volunteering.

The league will be working to identify new opportunities for your children to play baseball over the next few months.

Thank You,

SDLL Leadership

Dear SDLL Families,

I would like to thank you all for making SDLL such an amazing place to volunteer for the past 5 years. I have enjoyed getting to know so many of you and watching your kids grow as baseball players and people. I will not be continuing in a leadership role with SDLL, due to a new career opportunity.

Last night our Board of Directors elected Jim Tarpey as the next president of South Durham Little League. Jim has been a coach, a board member and most recently the vice-president of the league. He is passionate about baseball and teaching kids the game and will be an innovative leader of the league. SDLL is in great hands and will thrive under Jim's leadership.

Thank you all for making SDLL the best Little League around. I look forward to sitting in the bleachers and cheering on our kids together during the Spring 2016 season, registration opens January 1! Take care. --Jill

SDLL Dick's Sporting Goods Shopping Day

SDLL Parents and Players,
We are very fortunate to once again have Dick’s Sporting Goods as a South Durham Little League sponsor. Not only does Dick’s Sporting Goods support our teams and players through financial contributions and equipment donation, but Dick’s Sporting Goods is hosting a SDLL shopping day on August 22, 2015.
If you have never attended a league shopping day, it is a fantastic opportunity to load up on equipment and gear for the Fall season (and do a little holiday shopping) while saving a bunch of money. Dick’s Sporting Goods is again extending exclusive, store-wide savings for SDLL families by issuing a 20% off shopping pass for any purchase made in the store on Saturday, August 22, 2015.
For players new to the league this year, shopping day will last all day. So, feel free to stop by after evaluations. If you have not already purchased new equipment for you child, please hold off until shopping day. Your child will be just fine at evaluations with old equipment and cleats, or even tennis shoes. A copy of the shopping pass is below.  You will also receive a copy of the pass by email. Please print the shopping pass and plan to attend the SDLL Shopping Day on August 22nd. This is a great chance to save lots of money while at the same time showing Dick’s Sporting Goods that the SDLL family truly appreciates its support.

Dear SDLL Families,

It has been so great seeing such great, competitive baseball during this End of Season Tournament! Bulls Tickets at Opening Ceremonies

Tomorrow at Opening Ceremonies you will be able to buy Bull's ticket vouchers!  This is a great way to support SDLL and save some money while you cheer on the Bulls!  The vouchers are $10 (this is cheaper than than buying tickets at the box office!) and you can buy as many vouchers as you would like!  SDLL gets to keep $5 per ticket, so it is a great way for us to raise money and for you to enjoy a Bulls game!  The vouchers can be used for any Sunday-Thursday regular season home game based on ticket availability.  You just take the vouchers to the box office to trade them in for tickets!  They are good for seats in the Terrace View Section (209-218) or Outfield Reserved Section (128-134).

We will be able to accept cash or checks (made out to SDLL) tomorrow, so be sure to come prepared to get your tickets for the season!  There will be a table with a sign for Bulls Tickets tomorrow at Hillside.  Thank you so much for your support of SDLL!  --Jill

Save the Date! Slugfest is Saturday May, 2nd

The day you have been waiting for is rapidly approaching! We hope you are as excited for this year's SDLL Slugfest as we are! Mark your calendars for Saturday, May 2 at Herndon Park. It is a fun day of baseball, family, friends, and food!

Slugfest is our annual fundraiser and all SDLL players are asked to participate. SDLL is committed to keeping our operating costs as low as possible while still providing both ongoing field improvements and quality baseball equipment. All money collected from Slugfest goes directly towards these goals. We need your help to make this our most successful Slugfest ever! Each player is being asked to raise money for this event.

The number of swings your player receives the day of Slugfest depends on the amount of money he/she collects. There will be a maximum of 12 swings per player for those who collect $125 or more. We ask that each player set a goal of collecting $125, but donations of any amounts are welcome! We are really hoping for 100% participation from every team! Your team will be assigned a specific time to meet us on the fields and hit balls to earn points. Trophies will be awarded to the first, second and third place "slugger" in each division. This week your team parent will distribute your player's Slugfest envelope. Printed on the envelope is a bullet point explanation in case your player needs help explaining the event to family and friends. All donations are tax-deductible and should be collected and kept in the envelope. Players should record donations on the outside of the envelope.

All teams with 100% player participation will win a Popsicle party to enjoy after a practice or game. Additionally, every team that raises at least $1,000 will win a free pizza party! The day of Slugfest we will have food and drinks for players and their families. There will be giveaways and drawings for gift cards and other prizes, so start collecting your donations. Envelopes will be collected in a few weeks. Going to be out of town? Have another commitment? You can still raise money and help your team get 100% participation! If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to e-mail your Slugfest Coordinators: Jennifer and Lawrence Kahn (, Erica Caveney (, or Shana Davis-Riley (
