SCYSA All-Star Program Guidelines
The SCYSA All-Star Program features a single day tournament of exhibition games for the 10U, 12U and 14U divisions. The principal goal of the program is to "Recognize SCYSA players who demonstrate exceptional softball skills during regular season SCYSA games." Secondarily, the Program should "Provide a "higher level" playing experience for All-Star players than they would normally encounter during regular season play."
The program is NOT intended to:
- Signal to players or parents any indication of preference for selection to the Force Summer Travel Team(s).
- Reflect the "popularity" of a particular player with her teammates or others.
- Recognize general athletic ability or abilities demonstrated in other sports.
- Recognize the commitment and contributions by parents to SCYSA.
Overview
- Two teams will be selected for each division.
- A player "scorecard" will be provided to each team's coaching staff at the beginning of the season to assist with the season-long identification and tracking of potential All-Star candidates, coaches and managers.
- Approximately two weeks prior to the All-Star game day;
* The coaching staff from each team will submit to the Player Agent a rank order roster of players who best exemplify the core criteria of the program. (Coaching staff may NOT select players from their own team.) Nominees for All-Star teams coaches and managers will also be submitted at this time.
* The Player Agent will rank nominees and present the list at a division meeting of coaches and managers. At this point, coaches and managers may provide input on nominated players from their own team, addressing observations made throughout the season including; attendance, attitude, effort, commitment, sportsmanship, and athleticism.
* Using the list of candidates presented, a second rank order roster will be collected from each team during the meeting. A final sorting of names will yield a population of top players needed to field two team.
* By the conclusion of the meeting, a full and final roster of players will be agreed upon by the attending coaches and manager.
* After the meeting, the Player Agent will assign players to each team, with the focus on balancing the rosters. Coach/Manager pairing will be based upon popular vote and availability of personnel.
- The players elected to All-Stars will receive a phone call to advise them of their selection. Alternates will be called in order of votes received if an All-Star cannot participate in the All-Star games.
- One week prior to the All-Star game day, rosters will be posted. (12U & 14U divisions will roster 12 players, the 10U division will roster 13.)
- If more than one players has expertise at a specific position (e.g. pitcher, catcher, short), playing time will be shared EQUALLY. The players selected must have played in 51% of the regular season games. (Any exception to this rule mst be with Board approval.)
- At the time of the All-Star team selections, rules and conduct will be discussed with all coaches and managers.
- Spring league playing time, position, and batting rules will be in effect.
All-Star Nomination Criteria
An All-Star is a player who can do most things well - field, throw, hit, run the bases, and is exemplary in their defensive position.
Hitting:
- Has a good eye and makes contact on a regular basis.
- Good technique--especially important in older divisions.
- Don't overlook pure power or a great bunter.
- A good hitter makes solid contact even against the best pitchers.
Fielding:
- Moves well to the ball with proper positioning and makes most plays easily.
- Outfields "shadow" infielder movement to back up the play.
- Catches the ball with two hands, eyes on the ball and body behind the ball.
- Has a good idea on how to play their position and knows where the plays are.
Throwing:
- Has good form and exhibits consistent control of the ball.
- Can reach target with some power and accuracy on just about every throw.
Base Running:
- Speed is important but also look for body positioning, running through the bag at 1st, etc.
- Take healthy leads and is ready to run.
- Assesses the play and makes proper decisions with respect to advancing.
- Pays attention to base coach signals.
Effort, Attitude & Sportsmanship:
- Gives full effort to each of the above.
- Has positive attitude toward coach/manager, umpire, teammates and opposing players and management.
- Respects calls and outcomes and demonstrates good sportsmanship to teammates and opposing players.
All-Star Coach and Manager Nomination Criteria
An All-Star Coach and Manager should exemplify SCYSA values and Positive Coaching guidelines on a consistent basis.
- Exhibits positive coaching in both words and actions while on the field.
- Demonstrates good sportsmanship.
- Knows the rules of the game.
- Focuses on player skill development.
- Demonstrates respect for umpires, players and other coaches and managers.
- Exhibits equal treatment of all players.
Summer League
There will be tryouts for the SCYSA summer league teams near the end of te spring league, generally during the first week of May. A player may tryout for her age appropriate team even if she "played up" during the regular season.
The Board will approve the number of summer league teams based on the number of girls who are interested, and the amount of Manager/Coach volunteers.
The summer league is separate from the spring league and must support itself financially.
Summer League is a competitive league where winning is the primary goal. If there are two or more teams in a given age division, the teams will not be balanced. The best players may be put together on one team and that team will probably play in more tournaments and travel greater distances (i.e., a greater commitment of time and finances).
Performance during the spring League and past summer league performance is also taken into consideration when the summer league teams are selected.
