SC Swim Team: Welcome
JV Cards start off February with some great swims!
The JV Cardinals were on display this weekend, fully shaved and prepared to swim fast. On Friday night we swam against Columbus Academy, with the JV boys swimming their secondary events. Sam Smith started the night off in incredible fashion with possibly the swim of the weekend, dropping 9 seconds in his 200 free! That got the ball rolling, and the confidence was high for his teammates waiting to follow. Andrew Alfred finished strong in his 200 IM, dropping 2 seconds off of his best. The 50 free saw 3 of our swimmers each dropping 1 second in the sprint event; Max Ziegler broke the 25 seconds barrier with a 24.9, Tyler George dropped under 26 for the first time, and Devon Saccocio went under 27 for the first time. The 100 fly saw more great drops, as Francisco Garcia and Sam each dropped 3 seconds from their previous best times. Max and Tyler had another great battle in the 100 free, with each swimmer dropping over a second, and Peter Oellerman broke 1:00 for the first time ever! Francisco and Devon had a great race in the 100 back, with each dropping 3 seconds to get under the 1:10 barrier. Andrew closed out the evening with a 3 second drop in the 100 breast. A solid first night of swims for the JV!
Saturday took us to the UA Invitational, commonly known as 'JV Champs', although we were the only school there participating with only their JV squad. We kicked off the meet with a 1-2 finish in the medley relay, a great way to start the day! Our first individual swims were in the 50 free; Sam Smith continued his strong swimming with a near 2 second drop, while Andrew Alfred recorded a lifetime best as well. Max Ziegler had the next big drop of the day, cutting nearly 5 seconds off of his 100 fly time, while Tyler George finished right behind Max in a lifetime best. Francisco Garcia continued his consistent improvement by breaking 1:00 for the first time in the 100 free. Up next were our rookie 500 swimmers; Sam and Devon Saccocio. With 11 and 9 second drops respectively, they will be ready for the D-Lane next year! The back was a big event for us, with 4 swimmers reaching new lifetime bests. Andrew led the way by winning the event, and earning his varsity letter with a new lifetime best. Peter Oellerman had a great swim, dropping 3 seconds, while Tyler and Max each dropped 2 seconds off of their best times. The breaststroke was equally impressive, with Devon swimming a fast 1:10, while Francisco dropped 2 more seconds off of his best. Throw in 3 more lifetime best swims in the time trials (Sam- 100back, Devon-100fly, Francisco-50 free), and we finished the weekend with 94% lifetime best swims from our 7 JV Cards.
The coaching staff is extremely proud of the hard work that our JV group put in this season, and were glad to see it pay off this weekend. The improvements made throughout the season were remarkable, and we will share some of those in a later update. Congratulations to our two senior swimmers; Francisco Garcia and Max Ziegler, who both ended their St. Charles swim careers with 100% lifetime bests this weekend! Our challenge to the other JV swimmers is to come into next season faster than they ended up this season. Keep working hard in the off season!
The varsity Cards will be starting their postseason run this weekend at the Sectional meet at Upper Arlington. GO CARDS!
