SCSA Select Tryout FAQs

When are tryouts held?
Tryouts are held twice a year. Open tryouts for the Fall-Spring soccer year are held in early June. Players selected during the tryouts in June for the fall season should be committed for both the fall and spring seasons. Early November tryouts are held to add players to existing rosters, or for forming new teams if enough qualified new players try out.

Please note that U15 and older play in the Spring only. These players typically play for their High Schools in the Fall. Tryouts for these players is for the following Spring season. Supplemental tryouts are also held after the Fall season to fill the Spring rosters as needed.

What happens to my players if my entire team joins?
Your team will be guaranteed to play as you joined the club as a “team”  for two seasons if you join for the fall andspring - and only one season if you join in the spring. After that your players/team will be entered into the “open” tryouts in June should they decide to stay with the club.

Does SCSA bracket teams?
Yes, new to SCSA for the Fall of 2009, SCSA will move up the age to U10 for the bracketing of teams. SCSA has chosen to do this to be able to field competive teams in the leagues we play in. This same practice is being done by many clubs in the Greater Cincinnati area.

What should my child bring to tryouts?
Your child should show up ready to play soccer - with shin guards, socks, and shoes. They should also bring a water bottle and a soccer ball. Please make sure that your name and phone number is on your ball.

What will happen at tryouts?
You and your child should arrive at least 30 minutes prior to the stated start time of tryouts. This time is necessary to complete tryout registration and to have a number assigned to your child. They will then proceed to the assigned field. During the tryouts, individual trainers/coaches will run a variety of drills and scrimmages in an attempt to assess the skills of your child. After tryouts, administrators and coaches will be available to answer any questions you might have.

If I'm not sure of my child's ability, should I still bring them to tryouts?
Absolutely! We do not charge for tryouts and do not ask for a commitment during the tryouts. We hope that everyone just has fun playing soccer.

Are your coaches paid? How are they trained?
Our coaches are not paid, although some teams elect to have paid coaches/trainers. This is a decision parents on each team make. Our club is run exclusively by volunteers. We require all of our coaches participate in the OSYSA coach-licensing program and compensate them for their expenses while doing so. The vast majority of our coaches have attained a license for coaching and continue to pursue higher levels of licensing. We do strongly encourage that “A” level teams hire a paid coach/trainerand the parent volunteer would act as the assistant coach

After tryouts, how quickly will we know if he has made a team?
Most teams will be able to let you know by the day after the final tryout date. In all cases, however, players will be notified within a few days of the final tryout date. If you do not hear from anyone within a week please contact one of the club officials shown below.

I've heard that SCSA is Neighborhood Select. What exactly does that mean?
The only thing that Neighborhood Select can mean is that we are underthe umbrella of SCSA - the governing body that runs the boys neighborhood recreational program in our area. This is very typical for most other parts ofthe city and country. SCSA also has girls select  teams which are fed from various rec and SAY programs in our area.  We play the same teams, in the same league (CUSL),and in the same tournaments as the other select clubs from our area. Some teams have elected to play in other leagues such as the Buckeye Premier League. These decisions are made as a team and supported by SCSA Select

What are the difference between SCSA Select and the other area select programs?
Other local clubs have no geographic restrictions when selecting players. SCSA Select partially limits membership to boys and girls from the eastern Hamilton County and western Clermont County areas, providing greater opportunity for boys and girls in the area.

SCSA Selects player fee of $150 per season is much lower than that of most other local clubs. The cost of tournaments (usually about $25.00 per player per tournament) is an additional expense covered by the parents. We are able to operate at a lower cost through the efforts of volunteer administrators and coaches. Having said that, many of our teams currently have a trainer or paid coach/trainer working with them. The majority of these trainers, typically former college and/or professional players, are also unpaid volunteers. However, upon the decision of the parents, any team can opt to pay a trainer for their team. Most of our travel is limited to local tournaments and, again, is determined by the parents.

Lastly, we believe that boys today have many options and that they should be able to participate in multiple sports, particularly at the younger ages.

What are the costs to participate in SCSA Select?
The fees are $150 per season. This money covers league and player registration, referee fees, fees for field usage, insurance and equipment. We believe it is the best bargain in select soccer in the city. Each player is responsible for the cost of uniforms (approx. $60 to $80), which typically last three to four seasons. A limited number of scholarships and used uniforms are available forfamilies in financial need.

If my childmakes a team, what will we need to provide and when do we have to pay ourmoney?
We request the fee be paid within a couple weeks of your son being notified of making the team. You will need to provide the coach with a birth certificate to register your son in the league and a small picture for his player card.
