Bryshon Nellum and Sa'de Williams - TEAM USA 4 x 400 Meter Relay
Team USA dominates relays in Beijing
BEIJING, China - Team USA brought home three gold and one silver medal in the relays on the final night of the 2006 IAAF World Junior Championships at the Chaoyang Sport Centre in Beijing.
The women's 4x100-meter relay team of Jeneba Tarmoh (San Jose, Calif.), Alexandria Anderson (Chicago, Ill.), Elizabeth Olear (Woodland Hills, Calif.), and Gabby Mayo (Raleigh, N.C.) got the night started off right, bringing home the gold in their world junior leading time of 43.49 seconds. "It was great," said Anderson after the team's victory. "I'm proud that we won. We all knew what our part was and we did an excellent job."
After a hard fought race, the men's 4x100-meter relay team of Evander Wells (Stone Mountain, Ga.), Gordon McKenzie (Queens, N.Y.), Willie Perry (Lenior, N.C.), and Brandon Myers (Houston, Texas) claimed the silver medal with their runner-up time of 39.21 seconds. "It felt good," said Perry. "We all got out and did our best. The only thing was Brandon isn't comfortable with the baton in his left, but we did our best with what we had."
The U.S. contingent of Jessica Beard (Euclid, Ohio), Brandi Cross (Missouri City, Texas), Sa'de Williams (Los Angeles, Calif.), and Nicole Leach (Philadelphia, Pa.) took the lead on the second leg of the women's 4x400-meter relay and never looked back, crossing the line in a world junior leading 3 minutes 29.01 seconds. After their victory lap, Leach said, "I'm so excited. This was my third gold medal on a world junior team. We're proud, we had confidence in ourselves and did what we set out to do. We want to thank out teammates, the coaches and USATF for sending us on this trip."
In winning the men's 4x400-meter world relay title, Quentin Inglehart-Summers (San Antonio, Texas), Justin Oliver (Stone Mountain, Ga.), Bryshon Nellum (Los Angeles, Calif.), and Chris Carter (Ogden, Utah) easily beat out runner-up Russia, sprinting to the finish in 3 minutes 3.76 seconds to Russia's 3:05.13. "It felt great," said anchor leg and 400mH champion Carter. "I was honored to be a part of the relay." Summers said, "I'm happy we ran as good as we did. We got gold and we're all happy about that."
Also on the track, Darius Reed (Denver, Colo.) took sixth place in the men's 110-meter hurdle final, clocking in at 13.64 seconds. Erin Bedell (Plano, Texas), a freshman at Baylor, was 10th in the women's 1,500m final, crossing the line in a personal best 4:20.01. "I tried my best to give myself a shot. I took a chance and don't regret anything I did on the track," said Bedell. "I'm taking a short break now right before cross country starts."

Sa'de Williams
Junior Women's 300m:
Jessica Young in Lane 7 atic timing glitch, the ragets out very fast and leads all the way around the curve, with Sa'de Williams, Jessica Beard, and Brandi Cross even, just behind her, coming off the curve. Williams pulls away in the last 50 meters to win in 37.13. Cross is 2nd in 37.55 and Beard, the Junior 400m champ, is 3rd in 37.66. Young ends up 4th in 37.84.
Bryshon Nellum
Junior Men's 300m:
Jacob Scheurman runs hard down the backstraight and suddenly leaps, hops, and grabs his hamstring, and he's finished. With 120 meters to go, Calvin Smith has a slim lead over Bryshon Nellum in the middle of the track. Smith still leads with 50 meters to go, but Nellum edges by for the win in 33.19. Smith is 2nd in a hotly contested 33.27. Karjuan Williams is 3rd on the outside in 34.08. Scheurman will have to get on a plane to Beijing tomorrow with what could be a major hamstring injury.

INDIANAPOLIS - On the final day of competition at the Michael A. Carroll Track & Soccer Stadium, World Youth team members Ebony Collins, Bianca Knight, Bryshon Nellum, and Nicole Jones all finished the Junior Olympic meet with gold medals in their respective events.
World Youth 400m hurdles gold medalist, Collins separated herself from the from the field after the third hurdle enroute to a Junior Olympic intermediate girls 400m hurdles, record with a time of 58.26 seconds. Her time eclipsed not only the previous record of 58.84 set by Talia Stewart of Richmond, Calif., in 2001, but also the winning time of 59.97 by Heather Trimiew in the young women's division. "The record was the only thing I was going for," said Collins.
World Youth team 100m gold medalist Knight, made good on her promise, winning the intermediate girls 100 meters in time of 11.57. Similar to Collins' performance in the 400 meter hurdles, Knight's time also bettered the winning time of 11.63 by Kennyanna Wilson in the young women's division. "I really wasn't too worried about the record but I'm satisfied with my time," said Knight.
After finishing in what Nellum called a 'disappointing third' in the 200 meter final his main goal for today was redemption. Clocking a time of 47.16 seconds Nellum redeemed himself with a victory in the 400 meter finals. He concluded his day with two stellar performances running the anchor leg on both the 4x100 and 4x400 meter relay. Nellum's 4x400 meter relay team missed the Junior Olympic record by a mere .25 hundredths of a second. "I got out on a strategy pace in the 400 (meters) but then everyone started to leave me at the 200 mark," said Nellum. "After that I had to use my inside lane to catch everybody at the home stretch."
After a string of impressive performances in the 4x800m, 800m, and 3,000m World Youth team member, Jones, finished her meet on high note by winning the intermediate girls' 1,500 meter run in a time of 4:27.35. She also collected a silver medal in the 4x800m (9:23.74), a bronze in the 800m (2:10.86), fourth in the 3,000m (9:53.82), and gold in the 1,500m (4:27.35). "My goal this year was to make the World Youth team and I'm going to keep the faith that I will make the 2006 (Pan Am) Junior team next time around," said Jones.
In the intermediate boys 110 meter hurdles race, Johnny Dutch, of Clayton, N.C., ran away from the field to set a meet record in a time of 13.92. "I'm excited because I worked pretty hard, and I want to thank my competition because they pushed me to the record," said Dutch following the race. Dutch also ran a time of 52.10, to finish first in the 400 meter hurdles, but after it was decided that the race would need to be run again due to interference he opted not to compete.
Also impressive in the 100m field was Antonio Sales of N.C., winning the intermediate boys division in a time of 10.64, just .01 hundredths of a second ahead of the runner-up Donald Moore.
In the midget girls 400m finals, Robin Reynolds of Miami, Fla., set a meet record in the midget girls division in a time of 55.01. The previous record of 55.54 set in 2001was held by World Youth team gold medalist Ebony Collins, whom congratulated the winner shortly following the race.
In the 800m finals, after setting a Junior Olympic record on Saturday, Claudia Francis, held off a strong challenge by runner-up, Danielle Menlove, to set another meet record in the midget girls' 1,500m run in a time of 4:41.62. The previous record of 4:42.58 was set in 1988 by the legendary Heather Boroughs of Kansas City, Mo.
Also in the midget division, Elias Gedyon, with a time of 4:30.87 set his second meet record on the boy's side. The previous record (4:32.18) was set by Eugene Roberts of Eugene, Oregon in 1994. In addition to his performance today, Geydon also set a meet record Saturday in the midget boys 800 meter (2:06.51).
In the youth girls' division, Jordan Hassay of Arroyo Grande, Calif., collected her second gold medal of the meet in the 1,500m final in a time of 4:31.24.
Tavaris Washington, of Atlanta, Ga., won the young men's division of the 400m hurdles in a time of 51.10. "I had a lot of pressure on me going in because I had the second fastest (qualifying) time in this race and the fastest (qualifying) in the 110 hurdles," said Washington. "I wanted to win this event to give myself momentum going into the 110 hurdles."
Concluding the meet were the fan favorite 4x100m and 4x400m relays. Leading the way in team medals were the LA Jets track club of Los Angeles taking four total gold medals.

Knoxville, Tenn., - Bryshon Nellum ran the fastest 200 meter time in today's competition by any male in winning his division at the USA Youth Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Tennessee's Tom Black Track.
The 16-year-old Nellum of Los Angeles, Calif., scorched the first 100 meters on the track, but eased up the last few meters to win the intermediate boys 200m title in 21.30. "I did not run as hard as I was able to because I slowed down the last 10 meters," said Nellum. "I had a great start and sped up on the curb and just relaxed down the straightaway." Nellum's time would have also won the young men's division in the 200m final. The current intermediate boys' record is 21.10 seconds set in 1995 by William Obea Moore of Los Angeles.
In an amazing photo finish, William Johnson of the Cin Express Track Club came from behind to win the young men's 800m final. Johnson ran 1:54.71 (FAT .704) to barely edge Brandon Jones of Charlotte, N.C., who finished in second-place with a time of 1:54.71 (FAT .709). "I really could not see him (Johnson) coming up from the fourth lane," said Jones. "The last 10 meters, we were going stride for stride."
World youth team member Latavia Thomas of Philadelphia, Pa., cruised 2:09.78 to win the 800m young women's division.
Khrystal Carter of San Jose, Calif., pulled ahead the last five meters to win the young women's 200m crown against Scottesha Miller of the Gazelle Track Club. A member of the world youth team, Carter ran 23.97 seconds followed by Miller's 23.99.
In a highly contested 200m final, Bryan Webb of Knoxville, Tenn., ran 21.53 to win the young men's division by a nose followed by world youth team member Devin Mays (21.54) of Oakland, Calif., and David Chaplin (21.55) of the Titans Track Club finishing in third-place.
World youth team member Antonio Novell of Portsmouth, Va., leaped 6.66m/21-10.25 to win the intermediate boys long jump competition. Later in the afternoon, Novell ran 21.66 to finish third in the 200m final of the intermediate boys division.
World youth team member Kamorean Hayes of Charlotte, N.C., tossed 14.83m/48-8 to win the shot put in the intermediate girls division. In hurdles action, world youth team members Cordera Jenkins (14.11) of Dickinson, Texas and April Williams (13.96) of Dallas, Texas ran the fastest qualifying times in their age divisions to advance in the 110m and 100m hurdles respectively.
In a highly contested young women's shot put competition, Samantha Musil of Dubois, Neb., surprised herself once again with another championship title. On her final attempt, the 17-year-old Musil tossed 12.80m/42-0 to take the lead over world youth team member Jenny Svoboda. "This was a big surprise because the shot put is not my strongest event. I was hoping just to get in the top three," said Musil. A native of Howells, Neb., Svoboda tossed 12.76m/41-10.5 to finish in second-place. "This just was not my day, but I did have fun," said Svoboda. Later in the afternoon, the 16-year-old Svoboda won the young women's javelin throw with a mark of 37.53m/123-1.
Trevon Rainford of Philadelphia, Pa., took the lead with one lap to go to win the young men's 5,000m crown. The 17-year-old Rainford finished in 15:38.56 followed by Clay Mayes of the Jenks America Track Club, who finished second in 15:59.41. "I was about 30 meters behind the leader with four laps to go. I just stayed with the pack and I didn't want the leader to get to far away," said Rainford. "I made my move with one lap to go and finished strong," Rainford continued.
Brennan Clay of the MLK Blasters Track Club leaped 5.89m/19-4 to win a very close long jump competition in the youth boys division. David Amerson of Greensboro, N.C., finished second with a mark of 5.88m/19-3.5 followed by Trevor Tatum (5.87m/19-3.25) of the Gazelle Track Club in third-place.
