Spartan Welcome Letter
STANWOOD YOUTH FOOTBALL (SCJAA)WELCOME

On behalf of the SYF Board, Coaches and Volunteers welcome to the 2009 Stanwood Youth Football Season.  Below is some information to get the season started off on the right foot. SYF is dedicated to instructing fundamental football as well as teaching life skills such as discipline, responsibility, respect, loyalty, teamwork, self-esteem and sportsmanship. You will witness many positive changes in your ballplayer as the season progresses.

SYF provides you with all the necessary equipment except a practice jersey, cleats and athletic supporter/cup. If you have questions on were to purchase such items, please contact your Head Coach. This is your equipment, please take care of it. You are financially responsible for all gear issued. If you have questions or issues with your equipment, please speak with your Head Coach.

It is our goal to keep an open line of communication with you at all times. If there is an issue please speak with your Head Coach. If the issue cannot be resolved, then please make arraignments to speak with me.  Codes of Conduct and other matters have been discussed at this practice. Conduct issues will not be tolerated at practices, games or other SYF events.

Please have your ballplayer suited up and ready to practice each night. There is no water available at the field so please supply your ballplayer a container of water with their name marked on it. Practice schedules will be handed out at your team practice.

Running a youth football program is very expensive. One-way to offset the registration costs are to conduct fundraisers. This year we will be conducting our annual Car Wash on Sunday, August 17th. Each team will have a selected time. We ask that each ballplayer sell two (2) sheets of pre-sale car wash tickets. Every cent raised goes back toward the SYF program. (Car Wash times below). If every Spartan participates, we will raise over $10,000 without even washing a car. Here are also two cool incentives. The ballplayer that sells the most car wash tickets wins a signed Ingram Seahawks Jersey. The second place ballplayer wins a signed Ingram Seahawks hat. The team that sells the most pre-sale tickets wins a pizza party. Team parents have additional sheets. Help us keep the ballplayers in the best equipment possible.

August is a busy month with practices and many events scheduled. Please visit the SYF website often for an updated calendar. Everything from the Car Wash to the Meadowdale Invite to the WJFL Jamboree to the Stanwood High School game schedule.

Please visit www.stanwoodfootball.com

Communication and flexibility are the key to any good program so if you have a question, comment or concern, please contact your Head Coach. Give your Head Coach an opportunity to help the situation. If he doesn’t know it’s broke, he cannot fix it.

Practices are very important, and so is family time. We ask that you make every reasonable attempt to make it and participate in practices. Football is a sport where you learn the most during practice. On average, a SYF team will practice between 130 and 170 hours in a season and only a fraction of that playing actual game.

For new parents, Stanwood Youth Football is unlike any other sport/program you have been apart of. We encourage you to get to know your fellow team parents and ballplayers. We spend a lot of time together and many ballplayers and parents make lasting friendships. Conduct, as always will be stressed this season. We at SYF strive not to allow feuds or other “adult” problems or politics enter this program. If you perceive that there may be an issue, we encourage that it is solved. SYF is not a neighborhood program and we do not support neighborhood teams. That is why such steps as combines are taken. Help us make this a great season. This is a kid’s game, let’s not let adults politics interfere with your child’s experience.

Please continue hydrating to prepare for the upcoming practices. SYF uses conditioning as a safety tool. Your ballplayer may not be physically ready for 3-hour practices. Your ballplayer will be sore and most likely find muscle groups he never knew he had. Do not skip practices due to being sore. Stretching and conditioning are vital.

Stanwood Youth Football as well as many youth programs in the community is completely run/operated by volunteers. There are thousands of hours dedicated in making such a program successful. Assist us in making this program successful. Make every attempt to be part of the solution and not the problem. Remember the bigger picture and the fact that there are 135+ ballplayers who want to enjoy the great game of football. Become a team parent, a team supporter and pitch in to better the program.

Here are a few key dates to remember:

If there are any questions, please contact your Head Coach or myself. Visit our SYF website at www.stanwoodfootball.com for schedules, football information and photos.

Until next time, be safe and KEEP THE SPARTAN PRIDE ALIVE!!

Kids first! Stanwood Youth Football is focused on coaching fundamental football. Kids first! That is our focus and should be the focus for everyone involved including coaches, parents and officials.

Respect    Discipline    Responsibility    Character    Sportsmanship    Teamwork    Leadership

Just a reminder of what our focus should be-

Do what’s right, not what’s easy. We are being watched and listened to every minute we are with ballplayers. Stay positive! Here are a few things we were taught when we were little...
1. Do what we know as right.
2. Treat others as you want to be treated.
3. Pick up after ourselves.
4. Say please and thank you.
5. Remember the big picture.
6. This is a kid’s game.
7. If you have nothing good to say, don't say anything.
8. You are a mentor to these kids.
9. We should teach more than football- responsibility, discipline, leadership, respect, teamwork and good citizenship.
10. Do what we know as right.

2009 Rule Changes and who is eligible to participate

There has been some questions about the rule changes for the 2009season.

 THERE ARE NO BIG CHANGES!

No rush for PAT at the 89er level when kicking. Everything else, playdowns, weights and such are the same.

Who is eligible to participate in SYF/WJFL. Anyone in grades K-8th. You cannot turn 15 during the season. That's it. That means ballplayers from Stanwood, Camano Island, Arlington, Warm Beach, Lakewood, Conway, Burlington and where ever. Just be entering K-8th grades and provide a legal birth certificate.

If you have a question.... email us at spartanfootball@hotmail.com. Rumors are sometimes fun but a fact is that... a FACT.

HOW STUPID IS THIS?

2 arrested in fight at youth ball game

News Published September 30, 2007
15 in fray; 1 man goes to hospital with neck injury
Diane Huber
The Olympian
Two people were arrested and another man was hospitalized after a fight that involved at least 15 people at a youth football game Saturday. The fight occurred when a parent of a child on the losing team struck a parent from the winning team with an umbrella, Lacey police officer Roland Sapinoso said. The fight broke out at about 3:30 p.m. in a practice field next to South Sound Stadium after a game between two Black Hills Youth Football teams made up of second- through fourth-graders. The Yelm Thunder won the game 13-0 over the Lacey Bobcats, and parents were making a pyramid for the players to run through when the fight started, said Roger Reise, whose grandson, 9, plays with Yelm. "It kind of takes away from everything. It's silly," Reise said, echoing what many parents and coaches said.Police arrested Lacey residents Reginal Maae, 18, and Madlyn Mapu, who is in her 50s, for simple assault, Sapinoso said.Jennifer Brooks of Yelm said her father, George Rabon Jr., was hospitalized with a neck injury after he tried to break up the fight. Two other women supporting the Thunder were treated at the scene for minor injuries, Sapinoso said.Maurice Hooper, coach of the Bobcats, said he didn't see how the fight started."I don't know what happened, honestly," he said. "There was a lot of stuff said on both sides. We're grown-ups, and it's about the kids."Chuck Farrar, president of the league, said there were two to four instigators "who took a game of second- through fourth-graders way too seriously."Another 10 to 15 people got involved to try to break up the fight, he added. The Black Hills Junior Football League is made up of 21 football teams and cheerleading squads with 862 students in second- through eighth-grades. Farrar said it was the first fight at a football game since the league formed in 1994. Sapinoso said it was the second time this season Lacey police have responded to a fight at that location during a game, but he didn't know the teams involved.Diane Huber covers Lacey for The Olympian. She can be reached at 360-357-0204 or dhuber@theolympian.com.

It's Never Too Late To Turn Those Grades Around! - Ten Tips for Academic Success
Ten Tips for Academic Success
As summer comes to a close, young people are heading back to school and hitting the books. Start your child's school year off right by implementing regular homework routines. Follow these great tips to promote academic success for your kids.
1. Discuss the importance of goals with your child.
2. Together, set appropriate goals for him or her. Begin with two or three attainable goals.
3. Develop a goal achievement plan – set a timeframe for completion, identify resources to support the attainment of the goal and the obstacles to overcome.
4. Together, create a step-by-step action plan for achieving each goal.
5. Recognize any and all progress through verbal praise or incentives.
6. Establish a regular time to accomplish homework and talk about progress on goals.
7. Set family goals as well and work together to achieve them.
8. Be a positive role model. Share personal goals with your child and your own strategies for attainment.
9. Create a goal corner on your refrigerator or family bulletin board. Be accountable and regularly check the progress.
10. Talk to your child’s teacher. Make sure the goals you set support classroom efforts.

Stanwood Youth Football and it’s volunteer staff want to assist youth with the resources they need to succeed at school and beyond.

With support from caring individuals, SYF can help a multitude of kids make the grade. Support SYF and help us help kids!

Starting September 4th SYF begins it's school practice hours. Practices are Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 5pm to 7pm.
