Spartan Welcome Letter
STANWOOD YOUTH FOOTBALL (SCJAA)WELCOME

On behalf of the SYF Board, Coaches and Volunteers welcome to the 2008 Stanwood Youth Football Season.  Below is some information to get the season started off on the right foot. SYF is dedicated to instructing fundamental football as well as teaching life skills such as discipline, responsibility, respect, loyalty, teamwork, self-esteem and sportsmanship. You will witness many positive changes in your ballplayer as the season progresses.

SYF provides you with all the necessary equipment except a practice jersey, cleats and athletic supporter/cup. If you have questions on were to purchase such items, please contact your Head Coach. This is your equipment, please take care of it. You are financially responsible for all gear issued. If you have questions or issues with your equipment, please speak with your Head Coach.

It is our goal to keep an open line of communication with you at all times. If there is an issue please speak with your Head Coach. If the issue cannot be resolved, then please make arraignments to speak with me.  Codes of Conduct and other matters have been discussed at this practice. Conduct issues will not be tolerated at practices, games or other SYF events.

Please have your ballplayer suited up and ready to practice each night. There is no water available at the field so please supply your ballplayer a container of water with their name marked on it. Practice schedules will be handed out at your team practice.

Running a youth football program is very expensive. One-way to offset the registration costs are to conduct fundraisers. This year we will be conducting our annual Car Wash on Sunday, August 17th. Each team will have a selected time. We ask that each ballplayer sell two (2) sheets of pre-sale car wash tickets. Every cent raised goes back toward the SYF program. (Car Wash times below). If every Spartan participates, we will raise over $10,000 without even washing a car. Here are also two cool incentives. The ballplayer that sells the most car wash tickets wins a signed Ingram Seahawks Jersey. The second place ballplayer wins a signed Ingram Seahawks hat. The team that sells the most pre-sale tickets wins a pizza party. Team parents have additional sheets. Help us keep the ballplayers in the best equipment possible.

August is a busy month with practices and many events scheduled. Please visit the SYF website often for an updated calendar. Everything from the Car Wash to the Meadowdale Invite to the WJFL Jamboree to the Stanwood High School game schedule.

Please visit www.stanwoodfootball.com

Communication and flexibility are the key to any good program so if you have a question, comment or concern, please contact your Head Coach. Give your Head Coach an opportunity to help the situation. If he doesn’t know it’s broke, he cannot fix it.

Practices are very important, and so is family time. We ask that you make every reasonable attempt to make it and participate in practices. Football is a sport where you learn the most during practice. On average, a SYF team will practice between 130 and 170 hours in a season and only a fraction of that playing actual game.

For new parents, Stanwood Youth Football is unlike any other sport/program you have been apart of. We encourage you to get to know your fellow team parents and ballplayers. We spend a lot of time together and many ballplayers and parents make lasting friendships. Conduct, as always will be stressed this season. We at SYF strive not to allow feuds or other “adult” problems or politics enter this program. If you perceive that there may be an issue, we encourage that it is solved. SYF is not a neighborhood program and we do not support neighborhood teams. That is why such steps as combines are taken. Help us make this a great season. This is a kid’s game, let’s not let adults politics interfere with your child’s experience.

Please continue hydrating to prepare for the upcoming practices. SYF uses conditioning as a safety tool. Your ballplayer may not be physically ready for 3-hour practices. Your ballplayer will be sore and most likely find muscle groups he never knew he had. Do not skip practices due to being sore. Stretching and conditioning are vital.

Stanwood Youth Football as well as many youth programs in the community is completely run/operated by volunteers. There are thousands of hours dedicated in making such a program successful. Assist us in making this program successful. Make every attempt to be part of the solution and not the problem. Remember the bigger picture and the fact that there are 135+ ballplayers who want to enjoy the great game of football. Become a team parent, a team supporter and pitch in to better the program.

Here are a few key dates to remember:

July 28th First Practice 5pm to 8pm SHS Mandatory

August 16th Meadowdale Invite/ Canadian-American Games (Scrimmage). Time and place TBA

August 17th 6th Annual SYF Car Wash Haggen Grocery Store

            8:30am to 1pm 89ers and Red Juniors

12:30pm to 5pm PeeWee, White Juniors and Seniors.

August 24th WesCo Jr. Football league Jamboree Edmonds-Woodway Stadium. Ballplayers MUST have a birth certificate on file with their Head Coach.

September 6- Regular season games begin

If there are any questions, please contact your Head Coach or myself. Visit our SYF website at www.stanwoodfootball.com for schedules, football information and photos.

Until next time, be safe and KEEP THE SPARTAN PRIDE ALIVE!!

Kids first! Stanwood Youth Football is focused on coaching fundamental football. Kids first! That is our focus and should be the focus for everyone involved including coaches, parents and officials.

Respect    Discipline    Responsibility    Character    Sportsmanship    Teamwork    Leadership

Just a reminder of what our focus should be-

Do what’s right, not what’s easy. We are being watched and listened to every minute we are with ballplayers. Stay positive! Here are a few things we were taught when we were little...
1. Do what we know as right.
2. Treat others as you want to be treated.
3. Pick up after ourselves.
4. Say please and thank you.
5. Remember the big picture.
6. This is a kid’s game.
7. If you have nothing good to say, don't say anything.
8. You are a mentor to these kids.
9. We should teach more than football- responsibility, discipline, leadership, respect, teamwork and good citizenship.
10. Do what we know as right.

2008 Rule Changes and who is eligible to participate

There has been some questions about the rule changes for the 2008 season.

 THERE ARE NO BIG CHANGES!

No rush for PAT at the 89er level when kicking. Everything else, playdowns, weights and such are the same.

Who is eligible to participate in SYF/WJFL. Anyone in grades K-8th. You cannot turn 15 during the season. That's it. That means ballplayers from Stanwood, Camano Island, Arlington, Warm Beach, Lakewood, Conway, Burlington and where ever. Just be entering K-8th grades and provide a legal birth certificate.

If you have a question.... email us at spartanfootball@hotmail.com. Rumors are sometimes fun but a fact is that... a FACT.

Friday (9/15)- was the annual SYF SPARTAN NIGHT! All 7 SYF teams held practices at the Stanwood High School field, enjoyed a great BBQ and then all the SYF ballplayers and cheerleaders get into the SHS Varsity game for free.

At half-time the Spartan PeeWee's took the field for a scrimmage while the rest of the SYF ballplayers took the sideline to have their teams announced.

Thank you to the parents that helped out with the BBQ and to the coaches that helped keep the ballplayers organized and motivated.
