  • ### GAME RECAPS ###
  • 5/27 (8-2 League/23-9 Overall)
STEELE CANYON 6, Cathedral Catholic 0:
Riding the wave of emotion from Thursday's thriller the Cougars would not be denied their 1st CIF title, blanking the Dons 6-0 at San Diego State. Samantha Beasley (13-7) was electric on the mound, allowing only 4 hits while striking out 7. Sam also had a great day at the plate, smacking 2 extra-base hits which drove in 2 runs. Jeneva Mack scored twice and Jayme Jarvis & Lisa Mongelli each drove in runs. The game was one of the most complete games of the season with only 2 strikeouts and many balls hit hard for outs while the defense was solid. Congratulations ladies on becoming the 1st-ever Cougars womens team (any sport) to become CIF CHAMPIONS!!!

  • 5/25 (8-2 League/22-9 Overall)
    STEELE CANYON 2, Ramona 1 (8 innings):
The Cougars won their biggest game in their young history with a come-from-behind win over Ramona in the CIF Semi-finals. Samantha Beasley (12-7) was very impressive, allowing only singles to the high-powered Bulldog offense. Sam & Erika Beasley each hit triples, but couldn't score. The defense was a little shakey in the 1st and the Bulldogs went ahead. After the nerves calmed down the defense played great, including a double-play by Jeneva Mack late in the game. In the 6th Hannah Rost led off with a single and was forced out at 2nd. Jessica Hartnett came off the bench as a pinch-runner in her 1st-ever varsity game and promptly took 2nd on a wild pitch and stole 3rd. Angela Harris, also coming off the bench, slammed a 3-2 pitch up the middle to tie the game. The Cougars then won it on a 1-out monster homerun by Jazmin Daigle in the 8th, sending them to the CIF Division III Championship game for the 1st time in school history.

  • 5/23 (8-2 League/21-9 Overall)
STEELE CANYON 6, Monte Vista 2:
Playing their 1st-ever home playoff game the Cougars started off strong, scoring 3 times in the 1st inning. Hannah Rost (3-4, 1 3B, 3 RBI, 1 RS) capped the inning with a single and scored on an error. After giving up a couple of runs in the 3rd the defense was lights out, helping Samantha Beasley (11-7) cruise to the win. Jazmin Daigle went 2-3 & scored 3 runs while Lisa Mongelli stole a basehit ranging far up the middle and firing to 1st baseman Vanessa Adame, who made a great stretch to secure the out. The girls played with fire & passion as they won their final home game of the season.

  • 5/17 (8-2 League/20-9 Overall)
    STEELE CANYON 3, Helix 2:
With the league title on the line the Cougars started off with their worst inning of the season, spotting the Highlanders with 2 unearned runs on 4 errors. Samantha Beasley (10-7) would not let down, limiting the visitors to 2 hits while striking out 6. Lisa Mongelli & Jeneva Mack each got 2 hits in the comeback, which was helped out greatly by 4 Helix errors, including the winning run with the bases loaded in the 6th. The Cougars did not strike out for the 1st time this season. The win is their 20th overall, a school record.

  • 5/15 (7-2 League/19-9 Overall)
STEELE CANYON 9, Mount Miguel 2:
The hitters continued to make things happens as the Cougars pounded out 11 hits in beating Mount Miguel, completing a 5-0 road league sweep. Erika Beasley (10-1) went the distance while Jayme Jarvis (3-4, 1 HR, 4 RBI) & Samantha Beasley (3-4, 1 3B, 2 RBI, 2 RS) sparked the offense. Jayme's home run (#4) was the club's first in nearly 6 weeks. Hannah Rost added 2 RBI and Jazmin Daigle scored twice.

  • 5/12 (6-2 League/18-9 Overall)
STEELE CANYON 3, Granite Hills 1:
The Cougars got a badly needed win, beating the home Eagles and keeping pace with Valhalla for 1st place in Grossmont South League. Samantha Beasley (9-7, 2-4 batting) finally got some runs to work with as the Cougars slammed 10 hits, including 3 straight 2-out hits in the 3rd for their 3 runs - Rachel Mahoney (1-3, 1 RBI, 1 RS) & Jeneva Mack (1-3, 1 RS) with singles then Lisa Mongelli (1-3, 2 RBI) cleared the bases with a triple. Vanessa Adame chipped in with 2 hits while Danielle Davisson turned a sweet double play, catching a bunt and firing to 2nd base where centerfielder Jayme Jarvis had snuck in behind the runner.

  • 5/10 (5-2 League/17-9 Overall)
Monte Vista 3, STEELE CANYON 1:
The bats continued to be ice-cold as the Cougars dropped their 2nd straight league game, creating a 3-way tie with 3 games to go. Danielle Davission (0-1) pitched well enough to win but got no support as the varsity lost their 5th out of 6, scoring only 2 runs in the 5 losses.

  • 5/8 (5-1 League/17-8 Overall)
Patrick Henry 1, STEELE CANYON 0 (12 innings):
This was truly a game that no one deserved to lose. The Cougars defense was outstanding, turning 3 double-plays & making all of the bunt coverages to perfection. Both teams had a couple of good scoring chances but neither could cash in until a 2-out 12-inning single off Samantha Beasley (8-7) to win the game. Sam pitched her heart out as did the Henry pitcher, who was almost knocked out of the game early on a wicked line drive by Rachel Mahoney (2-4, 1 SAC). Sam lowered her ERA to 0.85 for the season.

  • 5/5 (5-1 League/17-7 Overall)
    Valhalla 2, STEELE CANYON 0:
3 costly errors and only 4 singles spells doom as the Cougars drop their 1st league game, being shutout for the 2nd time this season. Samantha Beasley (8-6) struck out 10 with no walks, giving up no earned runs but still got the loss. With 4 games left in league the Cougars have a 1-game lead over both Granite Hills & Valhalla.

  • 5/3 (5-0 League/17-6 Overall)
    STEELE CANYON 9, Helix 2:
Erika Beasley (9-1) took a no-hitter into the 7th inning while the offense sent 11 batters to the plate in the 1st to blow out Helix. 8 different players scored and the defense played solid as the Cougars raised their league record to 5-0, giving them a 2-game lead. Samantha Beasley (3-5, 1 RBI, 1 RS), Jazmin Daigle (2-3, 1 RBI, 1 RS), & Vanessa Adame (2-3, 1 RBI, 1 RS, 2 SB) lead the offense, which pounded out 9 hits and received 7 walks.

  • 5/1 (4-0 League/16-6 Overall)
    Poway 2, STEELE CANYON 1:
The Cougars traveled to Poway to face the #7 Titans and lost a great game 2-1. Samantha Beasley (8-5) was again the hard-luck loser, giving up 6 hits while striking out 4. Trailing 1-0 in the 4th Jayme Jarvis & Hannah Rost hit doubles to tie the game, but Rost was left at 3rd. The Cougars stranded 1 other runner at third in the game, which was also a problem for Poway (3 runners left at 3rd). Poway eventually pushed across the winning run with an infield single.

  • 4/29 (4-0 League/16-5 Overall)
    Santana 2, STEELE CANYON 0:
The offense gets shutout for the 1st time this season as Santana's Shae Bass gives up only 3 hits and strikes out 10. Samantha Beasley (8-4) was the hard-luck loser. The Cougars got 3 runners in scoring position with less than 2 outs but couldn't score, including a 2nd-and-3rd/no-out situation in the top of the 7th. The defense was much stronger today, including an amazing diving & sliding catch by Hannah Rost on a foul popup behind the plate.

  • 4/28 (4-0 League/16-4 Overall)
STEELE CANYON 6, Mount Miguel 2:
The Cougars once again brought their hitting shoes, slamming 13 hits to win their 4th straight league game (6th straight overall & 9 wins in their last 10). Jazmin Daigle (1-4, 3 RBI), Lisa Mongelli (3-4, 2 RS), Angela Harris (2-3), & Vanessa Adame (2-3) were the hitting stars while Erika Beasley (8-1) & Danielle Davisson (1st save) limited the Matadors to 2 hits and no earned runs. Too many errors (3) and runners left on base (9) made the game close until the Cougars put the game away in the 6th with 3 runs.

  • 4/26 (3-0 League/15-4 Overall)
STEELE CANYON 7, Granite Hills 6:
In a game dominated by mental & physical errors the Cougars spotted the Eagles 2 runs but responded in big-time fashion, scoring 4 times in the first. Jazmin Daigle's 3-run triple put the Cougars ahead to stay while Lisa Mongelli added 3 hits & 2 RBI. Samantha Beasley (8-3) gave up 5 hits and 2 ER to get the victory, striking out the final out with the tying run at 3rd base. Definitely not one of the cleaner games but they found a way to win, banging out 9 hits including Vanessa Adame's 2 singles. The victory gives the Cougars the lead in the Grossmont South @ 3-0, their 1st-ever win over Granite Hills, and 5th-straight win overall.

  • 4/24 (2-0 League/14-4 Overall)
STEELE CANYON 4, Francis Parker 1:
Meeting Francis Parker in the rain-delayed championship of the Aztec Tournament the Cougars were determined to start off strong, scoring 4 runs in the 1st 2 innings (all with 2 outs). Jazmin Daigle's sacrifice fly started the scoring, then back-to-back-back 2-out singles in the 2nd (Lisa Mongelli, Samantha Beasley, Jayme Jarvis) plated 3 more and the Cougars never looked back. Samantha (7-3) carried a shutout into the 6th and settled for a 3-hitter, striking out 6. For the tournament the Cougars went 6-0, outscoring their opponents by a combined 44-7. The Cougars have won 4 straight, giving up only 1 earned run.

  • 4/21 (2-0 League/13-4 Overall)
STEELE CANYON 6, Monte Vista 3:
After surviving a slow start and her own error Erika Beasley (7-1) pitched 5 innings of 4-hit ball (all singles) to secure the Cougars 2nd league win over Monte Vista, allowing no earned runs. Jazmin Daigle went 3-4 to pace the offense while Samantha Beasley (2-3, 1 BB) picked up the save with 2 shutout innings. Hannah Rost scored twice and made a nice catch in left field. Lisa Mongelli & Rachel Mahoney also played well in field while Danielle Davisson, seeing her 1st action this week in a month, drove in 2 runs with groundouts.

  • 4/19 (1-0 League/12-4 Overall)
    STEELE CANYON 3, Valhalla 1 (8 innings):
Following an 11-day lay-off the Cougars faced defending league co-champion and CIF Division III runner-up Valhalla, a team they have never beaten. After giving up 3 1st-inning singles Samantha Beasley (6-3) allowed only one hit over the next 7 innings to pace the Cougars come-from-behind win. Hannah Rost's bloop single in the 6th, their 1st of the game, cashed in Jeneva Mack after 3 consecutive walks loaded the bases. In the 8th Mack lead with a single, moved to 2nd on Samantha's sacrifice, then scored on Lisa Mongelli's 1st RBI of the season. She later scored on a 2-out single by Jazmin Daigle. This rally almost didn't happen as Valhalla threatened in the 7th, putting 2 on with nobody out. After a couple of strikeouts a pitch in the dirt moved the runners up to 2nd & 3rd. On the throw to 3rd the ball got past the bag, but Vanessa Adame alertly backed up the throw.

  • 4/8 (0-0 League/11-4 Overall)
STEELE CANYON 1, La Costa Canyon 0:
After finding ways to lose to top opponents this season the Cougars returned the favor at La Costa Canyon, handing the home team a 1-0 loss. Lisa Mongelli and Samantha Beasley (5-3) worked a double steal to perfection in the 1st inning while Samantha shut down the Mavericks (9 strikeouts and 3 singles). The offense struggled (only 2 hits, both by Samantha) but the defense was great, making all the plays including much-improved bunt coverage. This was Steele Canyon's 1st win ever over a playoff-calibre & ranked (#10) Division I opponent.

  • 4/6 (0-0 League/10-4 Overall)
Patrick Henry 2, STEELE CANYON 1:
The Cougars had their chances against #3 Patrick Henry but couldn't cash in, losing 2-1. Runners were left at 3rd base in the 3rd & 4th and 2 were stranded in the 7th. 13 strikeouts and a couple of mental mistakes were too much to overcome. After taking 9 days off due to an arm injury Samantha Beasley (4-3) looked sharp, walking none while giving up only 5 hits and one earned run.

  • 4/1 (0-0 League/10-3 Overall)
    STEELE CANYON 4, Brawley 1:
In the semi-finals of the Aztec Tourney the Cougars faced their toughest opponent. While giving up an unearned run in the 4th, the varsity squad struggled at the plate with only 3 hits through 5 innings. In the 6th the bats came alive, starting off with Sabrina Padillo's 2nd hit of the game. Moving to 3rd on a single by Lisa Mongelli the Cougars loaded the bases on an intentional walk. The next pitch was wild, scoring Padillo. 2 pitches later Jayme Jarvis won the game with a 3-run homer, her 3rd on the season. Erika Beasley (6-1) won her 3rd game of the day, giving up only 1 hit.

  • 4/1 (0-0 League/9-3 Overall)
    STEELE CANYON 12, Lutheran 1:
The Cougars score 6 times in the 1st to blow out Lutheran. Erika Beasley (5-1), Jevena Mack, and Rachel Mahoney combine on a 4-inning no-hitter. Mack chipped in 3 hits & 3 RS while Samantha Beasley & Hannah Rost blasted home runs.

  • 4/1 (0-0 League/8-3 Overall)
    STEELE CANYON 15, Calexico 0:
Erika Beasley (4-1) gives up 1 hit over 6 innings, striking out 10, while Jazmin Daigle adds 2 homeruns as the Cougars wallop Calexico in the opening round of bracket play at the Aztec Invitational. Hannah Rost nearly hit for the cycle, needing just a single while hitting her 4th homer of the season. Sabrina Padillo has her first 3-hit varsity game.

  • 3/29 (0-0 League/7-3 Overall)
    Grossmont 5, STEELE CANYON 4:
The Cougars lost a heartbreaker on the road to end the Grossmont North/South Tournament on an unearned run in the bottom of the 7th. Erika Beasley (3-1) pitched shutout ball over 5 innings, but the Foothillers found their bats scoring 4 times to take the lead. Back-to-back triples in the 2nd by Jazmin Daigle and Hannah Rost followed by Angela Harris's sacrifice bunt gave the Cougars a 2-0 lead. Rost added a long homerun to right-center in the 6th. The Cougars tied the game in the 7th after Jayme Jarvis bunted for a basehit, the throw to 3rd was wide and Lisa Mongelli scored. With the bases loaded and no outs they couldn't cash in, hitting 2 balls hard but nothing got through. Although it's been a tough week the Cougars will get another crack at either Grossmont or Santana on Friday. For the tournament the Cougars finished with a 3-2 record, losing both games by only 1 run.

  • 3/28 (0-0 League/7-2 Overall)
Scripps Ranch 10, STEELE CANYON 3:
5 errors and 5 hits tell the story for today's game vs. Scripps Ranch. The visitors grabbed 4 unearned runs in the 1st and a bases-clearing triple in the 2nd to seal the victory. Lisa Mongelli got back on track, grabbing 2 hits, and Samantha Beasley (4-2) scored twice in a losing cause. The girls try to get untracked tomorrow against Grossmont North rival Grossmont in the finale of pool play for the Grossmont North/South Tournament.

  • 3/27 (0-0 League/7-1 Overall)
    Santana 2, STEELE CANYON 1:
In a battle of unbeatens the visiting Sultans capialized on 2 defensive mistakes, beating the Cougars 2-1. Samantha Beasley (4-1) was the hard-luck loser, giving up no earned runs and driving in the only run with a 2-out triple in the 6th. The Cougars managed only 2 hits in the loss, which leaves then @ 3-1 (1st place) in the Grossmont North/South Tournament. A win @ Grossmont on Wedneday will likely result in a rematch with Santana on Friday.

  • 3/25 (0-0 League/7-0 Overall)
STEELE CANYON 5, Mar Vista 2:
In game #2 Erika Beasley (3-0) went the distance again, allowing only 4 singles. Jayme Jarvis hit her 2nd triple of the day while Samantha Beasley went 2-3 & 2 RS, Erika Beasley drove in 2 runs, and Angela Harris (who caught both games) reached base all 3 times (2 walks and a single).

  • 3/25 (0-0 League/6-0 Overall)
STEELE CANYON 4, Orange Glen 2:
In the opening pool play game in the Aztec Invitational the Cougars jumped out early, scoring 4 runs in the 1st on a triple by Jayme Jarvis, single by Jazmin Daigle, and a 2-run homer by Hannah Rost. Erika Beasley (2-0) won her 2nd straight start, holding the visitors to 4 hits.

  • 3/24 (0-0 League/5-0 Overall)
STEELE CANYON 4, West Hills 0:
The varsity Cougars faced their 1st ranked opponent and responded with their best performance of the young season, defeating Grossmont North power West Hills 4-0. Samantha Beasley (4-0) was dominate, allowing only a 7th inning single while recording 11 strikeouts. Jayme Jarvis provided the crushing blow with a 3-run homer with 2 outs in the 7th inning to seal the game. Lisa Mongelli scored twice while Hannah Rost grabbed 2 hits & 2 stolen bases. The Cougars are now 5-0 for the 2nd straight season heading into tomorrow's Aztec Invitational.

  • 3/22 (0-0 League/4-0 Overall)
STEELE CANYON 3, El Capitan 2:
Finally a warm day after weeks of cold saw the Cougars go to 4-0 with a 3-2 win over visiting El Capitan. The bats got going early, scoring 2 in the 1st. Lisa Mongelli continued her torrid hitting, going 3-3 and scoring twice. Hannah Rost went 2-3 with a double for the Cougars as they built a 3-0 lead after 4 innings. After Samantha Beasley (3-0) went 4 innings Erika Beasley gave up a couple of runs before Samantha struck out the side in the 7th. Sabrina Padillo made a game-saving catch in the 6th with the tying run at 3rd, snagging a fly ball to the right-center gap.

  • 3/20 (0-0 League/3-0 Overall)
STEELE CANYON 4, El Cajon 3:
Another really cold day and another win for the varsity Cougars. Erika Beasley (1-0) won her 1st start, limiting the Braves to 4 singles. Jazmin Daigle provided the offense, going 3-3 with 2 clutch 2-out RBI singles. Not the best Cougar performance of the season (only 1 extra-base hit), but the girls found a way to win. The performance of Erika on the mound was especially needed with the 6-week loss of Danielle Davisson due to injury.

  • 3/17 (0-0 League/2-0 Overall)
STEELE CANYON 13, San Dieguito 3:
The Cougars started their home season with a bang, beating the visiting Mustangs in the Falcon Fiesta Tournament opener. After going down 1-0 in the 3rd the Cougars tied it in the bottom half and erupted for 9 runs in the 4th to put the game away. Three Cougar home runs - Hannah Rost, Jazmin Daigle, and Danielle Davisson accounted for 6 runs while Lisa Mongelli went 4-4 & 3 RS and Jayme Jarvis drove in 3 more. 8 different starters scored while Samantha (2-0) and Erika Beasley limited the Mustangs to one extra-base hit as the Cougars improve to 2-0 on the young season.

  • 3/10 (0-0 League/1-0 Overall)
STEELE CANYON 10, La Jolla 2:
With freezing rain, hail, and snow blanketing the county somehow the varsity was able to get in their opening game against La Jolla. Both teams started out strong, with Danielle Davisson driving in Jayme Jarvis with 2 outs in the 1st. The lead was short-lived as La Jolla's #4 hitter bombed a 2-run double to give the Vikings a 2-1 lead. After a 15-minute rain delay in the 3rd the Cougars really settled in on the mound and at the plate. In the 5th Lisa Mongelli ripped her 2nd straight double (3 hits on the day) and Jayme Jarvis (also 3 hits) followed with a long homerun to give the Cougars a 3-2 lead. In the 6th the game was blown open - 7 straight hits to start the inning. Jazmin Daigle's lead off with a single then finished the 7-run inning with another, this one driving in 2 runs. Erika Beasley also added 2 RBI while Samantha Beasley (1-0) picked up her 1st win of the season, allowing only 3 hits after the 1st inning.
