Saed Finds the Strike Zone versus LWA in Tough Loss
MS Softball had a long journey to LWA suffering a tough loss to an equal opponent. Sixth grader Katherine Saed who has struggled finding the strike zone pitched an AWESOME game!! Saed gave up only 2 runs, 1 hit, 5 K's, had 2 assist on put outs (one to 1B, another preventing a run from scoring to home), in 3 innings of work. Sarah Epstein took over pitching reins in the 3th and last inning (time restraint) giving up 1 run, 2 hits, 3BB, and also had an assist on a preventing a run from scoring play to catcher Olivia Hammerman at home plate getting the force out. Epstein also did great defensively. LWA was up to bat in the bottom of the 3rd with the bases loaded, Saed pitched a quick one over the plate where the LWA batter popped right up to 3rd, as runners went on the 1 out pitch, Epstein snatched the ball from the air making the 2nd out, and then tapping the bag at 3rd, getting the 3rd out preventing crucial runs from coming in and ending the inning! Overall, Schechter played one of their best games of the season. Bats woken up slightly with four hits! MS Softball with have their last game of the season at Jericho on Tuesday May 29th, come on and cheer as they face East Woods.

MS Recap
MS Baseball Topped By Buckley

In the dog days of May, defensive miscuses and the long bomb, put Buckley in front 9-2. One highlight was a 2-run 2B by Daniel Stecker in the first inning. Everyone had a chance to contribute today for Schechter. The boys' look to bounce back on Monday at Lawrence Woodmere Academy.

MS Softball Gets Rocked by St. Mary's

Schechter MS Softball team continues on their rocky journey in their 2nd season as they fall to St. Mary's. With all the 6th graders showing up and only having 9 players, Schechter put a valiant effort against a more experienced team. A nervous Katherine Saed faced 10 batters in 1.2 IP giving up 5 runs, walking the batter she faced. A reserved Sarah Epstein stepped up to pitch the rest of the game. Epstein had 5 strike outs, 5 walks, gave up 15 hits to a dominating team. With Epstein's strong pitching effort, Schechter failed to back their pitcher up as 4 errors were committed by the infield. Katherine Saed made 3 great defensive hustling plays catching tough pop ups held up by the wind. Epstein also had fun defensively throwing three St. Marys' runners out, two at home plate to catcher Arielle Marrache and one at first to 1B Alexa Jadid.

MS Softball Prevents Buckley from Shut Out

In a competative-friendly match up against Buckley, the Lady "Cubs" were defeated by a strong hitting Buckley team 10-1. Schechter had 3 hits, but committed 6 errors in the game. Erica Levy was 1 for 3 at the bat, hitting a single and getting her first RBI by scoring Olivia Hammerman from second base who also had a single. Pitcher Sarah Epstein, who for the first time pitched back to back games, was solid, giving up 6 hits and 5 walks. Epstein also tried to help in her own cause as she also hit a single. For the first time in MS Softball history, Schechter gave up a two - run home run to Buckley but the outfield hustled getting the relay in and throwing to home to catcher Olivia Hammerman who caught the throw dead on but the runner just got in a step ahead scoring the HR. There was strong defensive plays by Katherine Saed at 3B and Sarah Hirsch at SS...as the girls both made key outs (on pop ups) and Hirsch covered 3B as Saed went for a sky high pop but dropped the ball and Hirsch quickly covered third as Saed threw the ball to Hirsch forcing the Buckley player out at third, minimizing runs from scoring and ending the innings. Schechter's bats and defense were snoozing a little, but hope to wake up as they face LWA on Monday 5/21 @ LWA.

Tennis Recap
5/7 - KF 3 - Schechter 2

Today the Boys of spring to the drove west to the mighty courts of Kew Forest. Upon arrival all were in awe because the West side country club was the host of the original U.S. Tennis Open. The boys of Schechter were leading 2-1 with 2 matches to play. They put up a fight but as Kew Forest tied up the match both teams went on to cheer for the 1st doubles team of Hillel Buechler/Brian Kimiabakhsh on the grand stand which once held such legends of the game like Arthur Ashe, and Billy Jean King. As the Schechter team went up 7-6 the Kew Forest doubles team tied it up and went into a tie breaker 10 point showdown. Unfortunately, the doubles team could not hold it together and were defeated in this heart stopping match 10-7. A well fought match on both sides and Schechter was handed there 2nd loss of the season.

5/8 - Schechter 3 - LuHi 2

In today's rematch, the Schechter Lions were on the prowl for some yummy Crusaders, and boy did they feast! The Crusaders were looking for retribution from our first match which the lions took 3-2, well this was no different, All our singles won, David Epstein took his match with ease 8-2, Zach Lessen took his match 8-3, and Doug Hoch who is playing with 1 injured still keeps on destroying his opponents 8-0. This team is on a role and I do not think any team in this division can stop this pride of lions!!!!

5/9 - Schechter 3 - KF 2

As the boys are getting over there tough defeat on Monday, this is the time to show what we are made of. Exacting out revenge on the team who handed the prideful Lions their 2nd loss. As Kew Forest made there way east to Glen Head CC, we were waiting for them, pumped up to win and show them the real Lions. Coming out like someone lit something under them and with 3 fast wins of doubles and single matches. But the highlight was our 3rd singles Ben grossmann and our lonely senior David Epstein both went into tiebreakers sadly they lost but really gave it to their opponents, and made them work there butts of for there win, this is a hard fought well deserved match.

5/10 - Schechter 4 - ML 1

Today's match we were to face our other queens opponent, unfortunately for them it was in our "DEN". So as the Prideful Lions took to the clay courts of Glen Head CC, they were excited going for there 7th victory. And did this match go by quickly. One blinked and 3 matches were finished. Coach was blown away since this is the team who defeated kew forest who we split with. So it was 3-0 with 2 matches to play. Our 2nd doubles team got off the courts and reported the score of 8-3 and the match was now 4-0, counting on our first singles David epstein for the clean sweep. David epstein was down 5-3 and started to make a comeback 6-4, then 7-5 cheering GO,GO,GO, making our staple as one of the best teams in the IPPSAL tennis league. Unfortunately Mr. Epstein could not stage a comeback and fell to their #1 singles player 8-5, a hard and well fought match, but Schechter still comes out victorious once again.

5/15 - LWA 3 - Schechter 2

On this glorious day in May, the Schechter boys were biding for the 1 of 2 championship spots as they took the court against LWA. The match was going swimmingly as the boys of Schechter went up 2-0 in a heart beat. But as the doubles teams played their hearts out they failed to complete the victory. Awaiting the final out come of the first singles played by David Epstein in a 6-0 hole, Epstein rallied to force a tough gritty Tiebreaker, which had to be decided by a 2 point win. Unfortunately Mr. Epstein fell short this time losing 11-9, splitting the season with the Lions.

Thursday East Woods vs. Schechter: WALK(off) THIS WAY

Lions Squeeze Falcons
With an 16-2 victory Monday evening in St. James, the Schechter Lions continued to make noise in the IPPSAL league as they won their fourth of the last five games, bumping their league record to 5-3. Marc Canarick took his second win of the season pitching four innings of four hit, two run ball. Offensively, Zeke Silvera, Jordan Bass, and Max Geller each had two hits, two rbi, and at least two runs scored. Evan Stein had three hits including a first inning suicide squeeze which plated Bass. Elliot Schaja increased his team leading RBI with three (14). But it was a night for Senior Ari Zelman as he collected two runs on two hits and four stolen bases. Batting .600 over the last four games Zelman has raised his average to .300. COME OUT WEDNESDAY AND THURSDAY AT JOHN MACCARONE STADIUM IN GLEN COVE as Schechter looks to lock up second place and home field for the first round of the playoffs.

Lions Fall to Royals
Self claimed, "Second Best Team in New York" (besides the New York Metropolitans, Damien Easley for Mayor) Lions of Schechter fell to perenial contender 6-4 in a thriller. With two outs and runners on second and third, team leader in rbi, Elliot Schaja lined out to second to end a potential storybook upset. Sophomore Kyle McCaffrey went all seven innings keeping Upper Room at bay, striking out two, while doing a masterful job mixing location and tempting the overly aggressive Royals. After a two run home run in the bottom of the first McCaffrey settled down allowing only one earned run the next five innings. Defensively, two outstanding defensive plays by cousins Jordan Bass and Zeke Silvera kept the Lions close. In the bottom of the fourth ranged to his right and dove, fielded the sharp hit up the middle and gunned out the home run hitting Royal. The following inning Bass ranged deep into the hole, reared back, and throwing over the top a one hop pick to get the speedy left fielder. Offensively, Ari Derman (who reached on a single) was driven in by Elliot Schaja's rbi single. Schechter loaded the bases in the inning with one out but a double play ball, squandered any further damage. The top of the sixth Schechter forced the action as Geller reached on an error by the first baseman. After Keith Zauderer narrowly beat out another double play, he stole second and with two outs was driven in by Ari Zelman, who advanced on the throw home. McCaffrey laid down a bunt, and an over throw allowed Zelman to score from third as the last run of the inning. Down 6-3 and with two outs left, Evan Stein was plunked. After a stolen base and a strike out, Schechter needed another two out rally. A single by Max Geller gave Schechter first and third with the tying run at the plate. With one strike, Senior Keith Zauderer launched a double into the left center gap plating Stein and putting Geller on third base. Schechter looks to soar into the playoffs as they have three big games next week; Monday the Lions will travel to Knox. COME OUT WEDNESDAY AND THURSDAY AS SCHECHTER LOOKS TO BEAT RIVAL PORTLEDGE ON WEDNESDAY AND LOCK UP HOME FIELD ADVANTAGE THURSDAY AGAINST FAITH!

Boys' Varsity Baseball Jumps Two Second Place
On a critical day in the short IPPSAL Baseball Season, the Lions swept the first doubleheader in school history. Taking the field at a nice leisurely time of 3:45, the boys fell behind Faith early 1-0. Senior Zeke Silvera calmed down after a leadoff triple, allowing one hit over the next three innings. In the top of the fourth, freshman DH Ari Derman, in his first game back from injury led off with a single to left field. With Derman on first fellow freshman, catcher, Max Geller ripped a double into the right center field gap. With runners on 2nd and 3rd Senior Keith Zauderer hit a groundball to SS who came up throwing and gunned out Derman at home. The very next pitch, team leader in RBI, sophomore Elliot Schaja drove the ball to right center for another double, plating Geller. Senior, first baseman Ari Zelman hit a Sac Fly to plate Zauderer and Schechter took a 2-1 lead. Silvera gave up two unearned runs in the fourth, but the Lions bats came right back in the fifth. With one out Jordan Bass got one of his five hits on the day as he singled to left field. After senior Evan Stein walked, he stole second. With an inexperienced pitcher on the mound, Stein took a huge lead off second and drew the throw, immediately Bass broke for home beating the throw and allowing Stein to complete the double steal. With two outs Geller hit a clutch single to drive in Stein as the go ahead run. The Lions tacked on another run in the top of the sixth with an rbi double off the bat of Bass. Canarick pitched two shutout innings to close the door and earn the first save of the year.

With a twenty minute intermission, and half time show, the Schlions celebrated their hard fought victory. Canarick took the hill to finish the final four innings of his initial start. Allowing two runs, neither earned, Canarick pitched a gem giving Schechter a wonderful chance to win. After an rbi by Schaja in the top of the fifth, the top of the sixth saw the Lions go from a 5-4 deficit to an 8-5 lead. Schechter batted around in the sixth as Sophomore Kyle McCaffrey hit his second single in as many at bats. After stealing second, Junior Lewis Rotstein dropped a bunt down the first base line, as OSNA conversed with the umpire whether the ball was fair or foul the Lions advanced placing runners on 2nd and 3rd. With one out Bass came up big with a 2rbi triple as the left fielder made a diving attempt at a low line drive. Stein followed suit with an rbi single, and with heads up base running advanced to second on the throw home. After Geller reached on an error by the shortstop, Zauderer capped off the scoring with an rbi single.

Tennis Blanks Falcons, Again
Today on a lovely day for tennis, the Schechter Lions hosted the Knox Falcons at Stanco park. The matches started out strong and so they should have but ended sadly for the falcons the same way as the 4/30 victory for Schechter, 5-0. Our first doubles Jon Steingberg/Daniel Addady played great as well as our second team which made up of Ben Grossmann/ Zach Abada great matches. Also due to our number 1 singles out with tendentious in his shoulder Doug Hoch still comes out to every game and still wins 8-0, and he did not disappoint again today. Great job! Next week we have 4 games , against Kew Forest(away), home against LuHi, home against Kew forest, and away against Martin Luther, a long road trip for the boys of Schechter but I know they will come through swimmingly.

MS Game at Eastwoods Cancelled
Today's game at Eastwoods has been cancelled, practice will take place in the back.

Wednesday, May 2
Tennis Keeps Rolling and Sweeps
In making the long trip out to Knox the Boys' Tennis Team was depleted in their lineup with 5 players missing, 1 with an injury. But taking the courts the Schechter team looked confident and was ready to give it their best effort against the Knox team. As the matches started and ended fairly quickly the Schechter boys were confident that they were going to sweep the Falcons 5-0 and when it was all said and done that's what happened. Great job to everyone and we will have another chance to play Knox on Thursday, May 3rd at home, which will be played at Stanco Park.

Tuesday, May 1
Shutout For The Ladies
Dominating the offense this evening was catcher and southpaw Rachel Hollander blasting a base-rounder to left field, as Schechter defeated Knox for their first league win 24-0. All in all driving in a total of 11 RBI consisting of one HR, one triple, and two doubles! Sigal Hirsch added to the book smacking in a total of 5 runs. The girls put in the heat during the 4th, scooping up 11 runs. Defensively, from the circle, Eliana Goodman once again kept Knox off the bags, and pitched two 1,2,3 innings. Sara Edrich's and Rachel Shonfeld's bats came alive tonight with their first doubles of the season which drove in two more. Adding to the tally were Noam Yossefy, Netta Bob, Ilana Ramer, Goodman, all with solid hits sending home RBI each. The girls are home Tuesday at 4:15 and look for a second win against VSCA.

MS Softball Gets "Walked On"
Monday afternoon MS Softball took a tough loss against Greenvale. All three Schechter pitchers did their best against a tough Greenvale opponent and a tiny strike zone. Greenvale gave up two runs, two hits and nine walks. Schechter was tagged for 18 runs on 16 walks and 16 hits. Amongst tough playing conditions Schechter kept their heads up and chalked it up under the learning experience column.

Monday, April 30
Lions Trounce Falcons
With a 18-3 wallop, the Boys' Varsity Baseball Team evened their record 2-2-1. Jordan Bass took the victory throwing three scoreless innings while going 2/3 at the dish with three runs and three rbi. However, the real juggernaut of the offense was Sophomore second baseman Elliot Schaja who went 2/2 with 6rbi including a bases clearing double in the 13 run second inning. Senior first baseman Ari Zelman, known more for his defensive work, went 2 for 3 at the plate snapping an 0 for 9 slide. Schechter will head out west to Morris Avenue Park on Wednesday to compete against Faith Academy.

Monday, April 30
MS Baseball Falls to St. Mary's
After spotting St. Mary's a 3-0 in the top of the first, Schechter scored 5 in the bottom including a bases loaded walk by Josh Jurysta and a 2 out 2rbi single by Dov Stern. St. Mary's tied it up with 1 in the second and 1 in the third. Seventh grader Brian Chavkin came in and held them scoreless in the 4th and 5th. The Lions bats were quited until in the bottom of the 5th, Ari Cooperman walked stole 2nd and 3rd and with 2 outs Chavkin singled up the middle for the go ahead run. Schechter was unable to hold the lead as they gave up 3 runs and ultimately fell 8-6. Offensively, Daniel Stecker chipped in 2 hits, while sixth graders Phillip Roth and Jake Katz contributed on the defensive end.

Boys' Baseball Finishes Week With a Split and Loss
After a promising win against Portledge on Monday, the Boys' Varsity Baseball Team headed east to take on OSNA. After falling to OSNA earlier in the year in six innings the boys made an early statement that it wasn't going to be the case again, as they plated three runs in the top of the third inning. Freshman Marc Canarick, made his first Varsity start and went three innings holding the Pioneers to three runs. The game was postponed at that point due to poor weather. Leading the offensive onslaught was Senior Zeke Silvera who bumped his paltry .125 batting average to .300 with two singles. Senior Jordan Bass plated Silvera in the first with a single and later scored on a Max Geller single. The game is in the process of being rescheduled to finish the final four innings.

Thursday, the Lions hosted Upper Room and fell in five. Taking the loss was Senior Jordan Bass, one of two Lions to muster a hit against Upper Room's ace.

The Lions (1-2-1) look to bounce back with a win against Knox on Monday at home.

Monday, April 30
Can you say DEFENSE?
Despite Mondays 15-2 loss to OSNA's Pioneers, the Lady Lions stepped onto the field with Pride for the rematch, and it showed. With Eliana Goodman at the helm the girls allowed OSNA to score only two runs off of their lone two hits, practically no defensive errors, and four 1, 2, 3 innings, the girls played their most defensively solid game thus far. Although, inconsistant hitting left many of the Lady Lions stranded on base, senior Ilana Ramer, "I Raams" scooped em' up and threw em' out and drove the only run home with a shot to the one spot allowing Yossefy to steal home, narrowing the score to Pioneers 2, Ladies 1. The game was an intense and exciting pitching duel with Goodman holding her command. Ladies "YOU ROCK!" COme out to cheer the girls on MOnday at Home vs. Knox.

Middle School Opener Drops Tight One
In its second year of existence, the MS Softball team showed up and did their best against an equally compiled East Woods team, losing 9-4. In the first, Captain SS Sarah Hirsch recorded the first out for Schechter. Pitcher Sarah Epstein also recorded her first strike out and assisted in an out to first base(wo)man Danielle Truglio for the 2nd and 3rd outs. Outfielder Aliza Chesler hit a single recording her first RBI as Olivia Hammerman came in to score Schechter's first run. Epstein showed perseverance in her first game for Schechter getting herself out of tough situation with men on base, but East Woods would not go away and scored 4 runs in the bottom of the 4th inning taking a 4-1 lead. Schechter wouldn't go away either, with aggressive running Schechter tied the game in the top of the 5th inning. In the bottom of the 5th Schechter struggled as East Woods would score on walks and errors. Sarah Epstein recorded 4 K's, 3 walks, and had 2 assist on outs and one of her own. Pitcher Katherine Saed ended up with the loss. Schechter had a lot of positive's in today's game and will now put their focus and hard work to the next game, Monday against Greenvale.

Tuesday, April 24
Baseball Evens IPPSAL Record
In the first varsity baseball game between Schechter and rival Portledge, the Lions held onto for the 11-10 victory. After putting up a three spot in the top of the seventh, winning pitcher Zeke Silvera (1-0) (CG, 3ER, 6Ks) was staked to an 11-6 lead. The walk, two infield errors, and four straight hits would have been enough to give Portledge the victory but a pickoff, and caught stealing erased two base runners for the panthers. With two outs and a runner on second base, Silvera on a    2-2 count ripped off a breaking ball that was swung and missed in the dirt and got by catcher Max Geller (1-3, 3B, 2RBI, 2runs) who pounced on the ball and threw a dart to 1B Ari Zelman. The lions dominated on the basepaths as they took advantage of the Portledge catcher stealing 18 bases. Senior shortstop Jordan Bass was the most grand of the larcenists with five stolen bases. Jordo also chipped in two runs on two singled. The day belonged to Senior Right Fielder Keith Zauderer as he compiled four hits on four at bats scored, two runs, stole four bases and knocked in two runs. Zaudy is now batting .667 through the first three games. Seven of the ten panther runs were unearned. Lions look to split the season with OSNA tomorrow in Centereach.

Friday, April 20
MS Baseball Wins First Game of Season
In the second year of existence with coach Andy Chavkin at the helm, the Middle School Lions thwomped rival Portledge 14-0. Eighth grader Tomer Talmy took the win pitching two strong innings, seventh grade rookie Zack Kardish and seventh grader Brian Chavkin each pitched an inning for Schechter. Offensively, Chavkin led the way going two for two and plating three. Dov Stern did a wonderful job calling the shutout behind the dish and applying the shutout preserving relay from Josh Jurysta and Max Solasz. Lions look to make it two in a row on Wednesday at home against Greenvale.

Friday, April 20
Ladies Fall to LWA 1 -11
Freshman Eliana Goodman took to the circle for the first time in her Schechter Varsity Softball career. With a quick 1, 2, 3 inning to start it off Goodman took to the 1 spot with authority, letting the Pink Elephants fly, with 7 strike outs, and only three earned runs. Errors in the field cost the ladies the game during the second and sixth innings. Once again the bats lit up as the girls had 10 hits against LWA's Glazer, the top pitcher in the IPSAAL league. Zari Huml shined tonight both defensively and offensively as her speed and smart base running earn the Lady Lions their only run. Noam Yossefy and Sara Edrich were put to the test as most of the action was seen at both the 6 and 5 spots. Come support the girls on Monday 4:30pm at home as they face Our Savior.

Lions Fall in IPPSAL Opener
Forget the 11-1 loss in five plus innings, the 8 unearned runs, and eleven strikeouts. This article is being written to talk about Senior Leftfielder Evan Stein's rope to rightfield to break up the perfect game in the fourth and the beautiful offensive production in the bottom of the fifth. Senior Outfielder Keith Zauderer normally recognized for his hockey prowess, and Soccer defensive skills, blasted a double over the right fielder's head on a first pitch fastball leading off the home fifth. Sophomore Second baseman Elliot Schaja laid a perfect sacrifice placing Zaudy on third base with one out. With one out confident, assertive first baseman Senior Ari Zelman strolled to the plate, with a mighty swing, Zelman rolled the ball down the thirdbase line, with the combination of Zaudy's jump and Zelman's blazing speed the third baseman realizing he had no play at the plate botched the throw to first as Zelman drove in the first run of the game for the Lions. Defensively, Isaac Silvera made a jaw dropping stop ranging deep into the second base hole to prevent a run from scoring. The Schlions look to put their first notch in their IPPSAL belt Monday at Portledge, you do not want to miss this!

Wednesday, April 18
18 K's for Lady Lions Pitcher Sigal Hirch
Once again the weather was not on their side as the Ladies hit the field, this windy and icy cold evening. But the girls knew what it meant to shine as diamonds do, and held the GLCA offense at bay only letting up one run and 4 hits. Sigal Hirsch led the team from both the Circle and the Box with 18 k's, only 5 walks and 2 RBI's, can you say "7-UP!" Rachel Hollander settled in quite comfortably on the receiving end of Sigal's fast ball for her first game of the season behind the plate. Hits were all around the horn 2nite 12 in total, with one for Eliana Goodman and Hollander, Noam Yoseffy, Zari Huml, Rachel Shonfeld and Ilana Ramer all pulling in 1 RBI each and Hirsch smacking 2 more for a total of 7 runs. During the 7th the girls did their best to hold the shut out for their pitcher, but managed to let one run squeek a walk home to final the score at schechter 7, GLCA 1. The girls face LWA tomorrow nite for their home opener with freshman Eliana Goodman starting it up in the circle. Come down and give the lady Lions a Roar!

Baseball Drops Exhibition to Kew Forest
Senior Zeke Silvera kick started the beginning of the 2007 season with a brilliant performance on the mound with 5.0 innings of one run ball. The Jaguars mustered a meager three hits and three walks as Silvera mowed down 8 batters. Sophomore Kyle McCaffrey and Freshman Marc Canarick, allowed the other six runs on 1 hit and 7 walks, while striking out 3, although none of them earned. Offensively, Silvera and Senior Keith Zauderer were the only two Lions to record singles for the home team. Senior Ari Zelman and Sophomore Elliot Schaja scored the two runs on based loaded walks by McCaffrey and Silvera. Schechter takes on OSNA tomorrow in their first IPPSAL game of the year.

Cold And Soppy Loss For Lady Lions Season Opener
The Lady Lions stepped onto the diamond tonight for their season opener at Faith Academy. The conditions were not in their favor as a bitter cold and wet evening did not help the rusty team. The girls faired well in the field ony having three fielding errors. Sigal Hirsch and Ilana Ramer worked well as the Pitcher/Catcher team making four tag out plays at home plate. The team welcomed freshman Eliana Goodman at first base, Noam Yossefy at SS who held their own tonight. The sole hit of the game came from senior Rachel Goldrich "G-RICH" who in her true hitting stlye sent the ball down the 3rd base line to earn her a single. The Ladies meet Valley Stream Cristian Academy tomorrow at Eisenhower Park for game two.

Spring Has Sprung
In todays rainy gloomy weather the Varsity Boys' Tennis team took their A game 4 miles northeast to Portledge. In their first match they had to face their rivals and did they give it their all. With the rain coming down there was a 20 min rain delay. Seventh grader Zach Lessen at third singles was initially down 4-1 but flipped the script with a 7-1 tear putting a stamp on his 8-5 victory. The second doubles team of Juniors Jonathan Steinberg and Daniel Addady accomplished the amazing feat off blanking Portledge 8-0, which is only trumped by the fact they did after falling behind 7-1. Although the men faught their hardest they fell short and fell to Portledge 3-2, next match is Thursday at LWA.

White Sweeps Brandeis To End Season
In the season finale for the Schecter White team, we face the team from Brandeis once again. Going into this game I knew we were not going to have a repeat blow out like we had on their court, they came out hungry and wanted this redemption game to show they improved this season. Thats exactly what happened they came out hungry and came back from a 15 point lead to cut it down to 7 at the half. Then with a strong showing from the entire team which most everyone scored or helped on the boards or defense these "Little Giants" all season proved the odd that are not always in the bigger and older team. This team proved that they are the real deal and will be a strong force when they get older, in this final game Schechter won 46-27. Great season and great job to everyone.

Total Team Accomplishments Ends Final Home Game for Red
In Monday night action, Schechter's Red squad defeated Brandeis by the score of 31-15. Schechter opened up the game with a 7-0 run. Schechter made big accomplishments as a team with their defensive prowl on the court. Defensively, the girls caused many Brandeis turnovers. Offensively, Schechter broke through Brandeis's high 3-2 zone with great ball movement. The 8th graders were big in their final home performance for MS basketball. Jordan Katz lead the way with 6 points and a blocked shot. Both Sarah Hirsch and Captain Dani Kristal scored 4 points. Hirsch had 9 big rebounds underneath and Kristal contributed 3. Lianne Canarick had 6 rebounds, and 2 assists. The "middle" (meaning the sole 7th grader) woman of the squad and Captain Amelia Bayroff showed her strong presence and leadership on the court with 5 points, 3 rebounds, 1 assist and 2 steals.

The rookies of the team all had an amazing game and some even made huge accomplishments that surprised both parents, coaches and even themselves. "Shorty" Aliza Chesler scored her first points of the season, by receiving a pass from point guard Sarah Epstein, she took some dribbles into the key and pulled up for her shot, a beautiful arch that would swoosh right through the net, making her teammates and parents cheer loudly and even receiving a hug from Captain Bayroff during a time out! Chesler also contributed with 1 rebound and a steal in the game. Olivia Hammerman had 4 points, 3 rebounds, 1 steal and was strong defensively for Schechter playing in a forward spot that she was not accustomed too.

With about 2 min left in 4th quarter, Coach J realized that almost everyone had made a basket in the game and was determined to have everyone who hadn't get on the board. With Katz being the lone scorer on the squad of 5, Canarick, Alexa Jadid, Sarah Epstein, and Katherine Saed were the remaining girls that needed the basket. With a tough challenge for the remaining 4 to score, Epstein quickly put her 2 points on the board making an outside bank shot. She also had 2 rebounds, 2 assist and 1 blocked shot in the game. Bayroff now took her place at point to help the other 3 girls get their chance for a basket. With Schechter putting offensive presence, Canarick who was crashing the boards, grabbing a huge rebound putting it back up quickly for her 2. Brandeis who were quiet, were now putting pressure on Schechter in the back court, but Bayroff saw clear as day, that Alexa Jadid was open. A long pass over half court right to Jadid, who took her shot missed, but was fouled and now had her chance for points. She stepped to hte line and was a little nervous, put the first shot up and missed. The second shot goes up and hit the rim but was denied her first poitns for Schechter. Schechter quickly gained the ball back offensivley and again Jadid was opened, she received a passed from Bayroff quickly ran in and made a lay up for her two. With less than 30 seconds left, and time out called by the coach, a plan was in tact to get Saed on the board. With Katz taking the ball out of bounce, Saed by herself on the block and the 3 remaining girls pulling their defenders towards the sideline, Katz threw a strong pass almost out of reach for Saed who jumped to get it, pivoted squard up took her shot......and a slow roll around the rim would deny her two points at the buzzer. Saed still had an amazing game for Schechter with 8 big rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal, and all out determination, hustle, and desire to play. Every single one of these girls have improved in skill, talent, abilities, and belief in themselves to play this sport. Every single girls is an MVP in Coach J's eyes!! The Girls finished their season with a record of 7 wins- 3 tough losses.

JV Championship Comes Back Home
The stakes were high (to end the season with a big win and the championship), emotions ran high (each team, each player wanting it more than the next) as the final match put forth two teams equally matched and equally deserving. Cold outside on the Portledge campus, the gym was well heated as the burners were set to go and the players on each side knew their role and were determined to take advantage and the trophy. The Lions opened the game with a ferocious roar as the first quarter closed with the Lions on top 11-2 as Schechter knocked down three 3-pointers (Rubin 2, Kyle McCaffery 1), it was 25-15 with Schechter ahead at the half, as Kew Forest finally found a few answers to the flocking Schechter defense. And it was the defense overall that allowed Schechter to secure the title. Awareness of Kew Forest's attempts to isolate their big man, Schechter guards did a great job doubling down, while the off forwards swarmed to deflect passes and create steals for the #1 seeded Lions. With a high scoring night for Josh Rubin and David Mendelowitz, it was the sheer aggression on both ends of the court, lasting all four quarters that truly wrote the tale of this game. Sophomore Moss Amer was one of the defensive leaders, as well as board crashers for as he secured two separate possessions after a missed back end of 1-1 free throws, allowing Schechter to cash in two more points while running off thirty seconds of valuable time.
Kew Forest made a valiant leap towards the victory, bringing the game to within 5 about half way through the fourth forcing coach Smith to call a time out and talk to his team. That being the turning point, Schechter finished the game with a tear that equated to the fashion which opened the game, ending the match and the season with a 45-35 victory and bringing the title back to the Den. The Lions end their season with an undefeated league record (13-0 regular season, 2-0 post season), overall 15-2 (2 losses, not in league play). This being the cherry on top of a fairy tale season, the celebration over a team job well done had just begun.
At times over a grueling 17 game season, each game proved that when 11 players play as a team and give it their all, it truly makes for a well oiled machine, with a prowess felt both on and off the court.

Red Squad Pulls Out Another W
In a close game vs. Holy Child, the Schechter MS Girls Basketball team came away victorious in Monday afternoon action, 26-22. Schechter fell behind in the first quarter as Holy Child was on an 8-0 run, until Sarah Epstein hit what would of been a 3 pointer as time expired in the first. In second quarter action, Schechter kept it close with tough defense and waking up underneath the boards defensively, were only behind by a basket. Schechter pulled away in the 3rd quarter by out scoring Holy Child 12 - 2, but in the 4th quarter Holy Child would not go away. Scoring 6 points on turnovers committed by Schechter (score 22-18), a time out was called and new plan was put in place to try and secure a Schechter win. With a full court press on by Schechter, Holy Child over the limit on team fouls and time winding down, Schechter was able to pull out the win with foul shots. The two 7th graders on the team came away big in the game with Amelia Bayroff leading the way with 10 points, 6 on foul shots, and Natasha Zara had numerous scoring chances from the outside and took advantage of that having 6 points. Forward Jordan Katz made most of her time on the court and scored 4 points, while Dani Kristal and Katherine Saed finished with 2 points each to round off the scoring. Kudos to Schechter Red now with a season record of 6 wins - 3 loses, will face East Woods on Wednesday away.

And So It Goes
On what will be the final page of the playing careers of six senior at Solomon Schechter, the final score of 50-45, may be enough for some, but the way the girls left their careers on the court is indicative of the four years they have been Lady Lions. In the 2007 IPPSAL quarterfinals, Lawrence Woodmere Academy was too much for Schechter as the inside-outside game of Schwartz and Boneparth combined for 38 points. In the early going everything fell for the visiting #3 seeded Tigers and after the first quarter Schechter found themselves down 16-6. Senior Sigalit Altmark had a gritty performance as the injured guard/forward, single handedly kept Schechter within striking distance with nine of her twelve points coming in the 30-20 first half. Amanda Boris saved her greatest individual performance for what ended up being her last. With bruised knees, a bloody nose, and heart enough for all Lady Lions past and present combined, Boris' 15 points and 15 rebounds almost willed Schechter to victory. Combined with Boris' output, sharpshooting Sigal Hirsch scored seven of her nine points in the second half as Schechter finished the game on a 21-10 run. Rachel Hoffman took a charge while playing relentless defense. Zari Huml prevented easy shots at all costs, block shots, steals, altering shots, timely fouls all disturbed the flow of the LWA attack. Ariel Glasser, Noam Yossefy, and Emily Goldberg performed admirably for Schechter and will be counted on next year to repeat the success, and advance further for Schechter. Congratulations to the 2007 Lady Lions: Sigalit Altmark, Amanda Boris, Sigal Hirsch, Rachel Hoffman, Zari Huml, Ilana Ramer, Ariel Glasser, Ronni Shalem, Melissa Stern, Emily Goldberg, Eliana Goodman, Genna Sinel, Noam Yossefy. Pride.

Natasha Zara and Dani Kristal both had 8 points and Sarah Epstein and Natalie Yamin rounded out Schechter's points with 2 each. Zara and Kristal also had 3 rebounds and 2 steals each. The Red team will be away this upcoming week facing Holy Child Academy and East Woods, and will then return right after winter break with their last home and season game versus sister school Brandeis.

Blue Buoyant In Victory
The Blue team steam-rolled the Crusaders from Long Island Lutheran 48-27 in Brookville this afternoon. The score was close for three quarters, but the unselfishness of the players and the terrific ball-movement sealed the fate of LuHi in the fourth quarter. Behind the prolific scoring of Danny Eiber and the distribution of Matt Ebrani, the young Lions looked awesome. David Hammer and Zach Abada had their best game of the season, with Zach stealing passes and finishing transition layups while David grabbed both offensive and defensive rebounds and scored both shots and layups. The entire team worked together to take the LuHi center out of the game, doubling him on every catch and blocking him of the boards. Great win Blue!

Red 5-2 In All-Around Game

Jordan Katz lead the team in scoring with 5 points, followed by Dani Kristal 4 points, Sarah Hirsch 3 points, Amelia Bayroff, Natasha Zara, Olivia Hammerman, and Natalie Yamin all contributed with 2 points. Yamin once again was huge for Schechter underneath the boards with 6 rebounds and a blocked shot. "Kitty Kat" Saed and Hirsch had 5 rebounds. Monday's win was by total team effort and having fun on the court. The Red squads next test is on Thursday in a big home game versus Lutheran after the GV play off game. Come down and support both teams!!

Seniors Send Lady Lions To Victory
In the final regular season game of six seniors' basketball careers, the Lady Lions defeated Kew Forest 46-20 to solidify second place in the IPPSAL West. Seniors Sigalit Altmark and Amanda Boris dropped eight on Kew Forest, as Schechter did a magnificent job running the motion offense, getting the ball to the high post and creating open shot opportunities. Defensively, Schechter's 3-2 defense squandered opportunities for Kew Forest shot opportunities, while the (wo)man-(wo)man defense forced tough shots for the Jaguars. The Lady Lions will take on the Tigers from LWA on Thursday, February 8th at 4:15 to start off the 2007 IPPSAL Playoffs. Come give Schechter the home court advantage they need. Thank you to Sigalit Altmark, Amanda Boris, Sigal Hirsch, Rachel Hoffman, Zari Huml and Il(l)ana Ramer for all of your sweat, smiles, tears, and memories.

White Stumbles At Holy Child
In the rematch of the century, the "Little Giants" of Schechter's Middle School basketball program were on a mission, and their target was to be victorious over the team of Holy Child. The game was tight as it was in the first game against these two teams. Both teams came out hard in the second half, but this time it was not in the cards for the "Little GIants" of Solomon Schechter and they were handed their first lost of the year by the score of 33-27.

Red Pulls Off Thrilling OT Victory
Schechter Girls MS Basketball team had to pull out all the stops against Buckley Thursday afternoon. In an exciting, thrilling, intense game, both teams were tied at the end of regulation 21-21. Each lead by one team lasted less then a couple of possessions as the other team would score. Each quarter in regulation scores were tied. Buckley challenged the Lions with presses and switching off between man to man and 2-3 zone defense. Schechter would come back with their full court press and switched from a 2-3 and 1-2-2 zone staying in man to man coverage for the 3rd and 4th quarters to put pressure on Buckley. Smart play, tough defense, pressure, calm collectiveness and clutch free throws helped the Red squad pull out the 27-24 victory by out scoring Buckley 6 - 3 in OT. Captains Dani Kristal and Amelia Bayroff combined for 23 Of Schechter's 27 points (Kristal 13 and Bayroff 10). Katherine Saed once again had a big day underneath the boards with 4 rebounds and steals, and contributing with 2 points. Another rebounding monster the helped tremendously on defense was Natalie Yamin with 5 rebounds and 4 steals of her own. Guard Sarah Epstein scored 2 points, had 5 rebounds, 3 steals and a blocked shot to balance out Schechter defensive prowl. Every single Red squad members contributed to the game whether they were cheering on the bench or on the court giving 100% determination and effort. BIG congrats goes to the whole team for the victory and becoming 4 and 2 on the season!! Next match ups are scheduled for Monday 2/5 at home versus OSNA @ 5pm and Thursday 2/8 versus a tough LuHi @ 5:30 pm home..come check the action!!

Storm Drop Close One Against North Shore
The Storm came out with a lot of energy and emotion as this game was the second to last for all of the seniors on the team. The North Shore Stars finished the first two periods up 4-0, but in the third, the Storm scored their first goal of the night on a sexy wrist shot from Max Geller. This was Max’s first goal of the season, as well as the first of his young career with the Storm. With 40 seconds left Keith Zauderer added a power play goal to cut the North Shore lead to 5-2. Unfortunately the Storm could not battle back to earn a point, however their next and final game of the season will take place on Sunday February 4, at Jericho, ball drops at 2:00.

(2/1) Kew Forest @ Schechter
In a much anticipated game that was to be the first of a two game set against Kew Forest in 11 days the Lions played through adversity and were able to hang on for the 50-47 win. If you can believe this, the game was actually closer than the score reads out, yes closer. It was a tight game the entire way with the lead teeter-tottering with almost every basket made. Each side had their heroes and everyone seemed to give their all as contributions were deep
