SC Explosion Start their 4th Season
The San Carlos Explosion have been together for three years. To date we have played each Fall in the Redwood League achieving two second place finishes and one third place finish.
We were District II Cup champions in Fall 2003.
Each year we have added one to three new players, while maintaining our roster at 14 players.
We compete in Fall and Spring Leagues and play an average of six tournaments a year.
We are always willing to look at new players. Anyone interested in trying out for the team should contact our Manager, Shari Edwards, for details. Tryouts normally involve joining one of practice sessions.

SAN CARLOS EXPLOSION WIN DISTRICT CUP 2003
San Carlos Explosion U13 Girls played against the best teams from South San Francisco down to Salinas during the weekend before Thanksgiving to decide the District II Champions.
The Explosion started out their quest on Saturday with a convincing
4-1 win over the Santa Clara Power. Goals by Niki Beigi, Jessica Edwards, Gigi Meneses and Patty Vega sealed the victory. The second game matched the Explosion up against CV United who had already beaten the Power 4-0. Thus, the Explosion needed to win to advance out of group play and into the semi-finals. It wasn't long before the Explosion took control of the game. By winning the midfield battle with solid performances from Captain Lindsey Sorensen, Emily Denton, many scoring opportunities were set-up and very rarely was the strong defense threatened. Sweeper Kelsey Walters, defenders Molly Bacon and Natalie Danielle kept the momentum going. After going up 5-0, goalkeeper Rebecca Gleason finally got her first touch on the ball before the game ended.
A thick layer of frost on Sunday morning delayed the semi-finals by an hour, but the Explosion was ready to play against the Salinas Kiwis. After a tight first half, the game was won by a truly worthy goal. Kalyn Susnow picked up the ball in the midfield, switched the point of attack with a long penetrating ball to Jeanne Pastore on the left wing. Jeanne beat her defender and pulled the cross back to Niki Beigi who controlled the ball and sent her shot into the corner of the goal. A 1-0 final result was enough for a place in the championship game.
Down to only 12 players for the start of the final, sorely missing Olivia Galioto, the Explosion again started strongly against the Peninsula Strikers from Foster City. Several near misses during the game started to look costly when the Strikers scored on a breakaway 15 minutes from time. However, the Explosion refused to give up and showed their character by coming back through another combination move between Jeanne and Niki that resulted in a tying score. After the Explosion dominated the first half of overtime, but with little luck, they struck again just as the second period started. This time Niki's cross to Jeanne saw her side foot in the golden goal. What a team effort!
San Carlos Explosion Heat Up Fresno Tournament
The San Carlos Explosion traveled to Fresno for the annual Halloween tournament to compete against eleven U14 girls' teams.
Playing up one age group, the Explosion had to quickly get used to much bigger and very physical opponents. In their opening game, they controlled play with some quick passing movements that sliced open the CV Avalanche defense. Some great finishing by Jessica Edwards, Jeanne Pastore and Colleen Goeser together with some good support play on the wings by Gigi Meneses and Niki Beigi led to a 3-0 victory.
The second game proved to be the most physical of the weekend with three players knocked out of the game with injuries. After falling behind in the first two minutes, the Explosion stepped up their game, matched the Mad Town Strikers for speed and aggression and came back to win 2-1 with goals from Kalyn Susnow and Natalie Daniele.
The third game in group play against the Flames was characterized by great controlled play, particularly in the center of the midfield by Emily Denton, Lindsey Sorensen, Kalyn Susnow and strong defense by Molly Bacon, Patty Vega, Kelsey Walters, Olivia Galioto and Rebecca Gleason in the goal. The Explosion ran out comfortable 2-1 winners.
With three wins and 26 points the Explosion advanced to the final with the highest number of points in the three divisions. They took on the Kiwis from Salinas Valley in the Sunday championship game, with the temperature continuing in the blistering 90's. Playing uphill in the first half, they scored two goals, the first followed some fine passing movements including switching the point of attack to open up space for Jessica Edwards to take the ball into the penalty area and fire a strong shot out of reach of the goalkeeper. The second goal was an individual effort by Kalyn Susnow culminating in a shot from 25 yards that crept into the corner of the goal. Despite conceding a goal early in the second half, Kelsey Walters made sure of the championship when her long shot sailed into the top of the goalkeeper ten minutes from time.

SC Explosion V SF Mission Flames- A Hot Match- 9/22
The Explosion traveled to SF to play what was described by Coach Paul Denton as "excellent fundamental soccer" last Sunday. Initially, the skilled prodigious, quick Mission Flames dominated the field and applied pressure to the SC goal. Goalkeeper Patty Vega was able to aptly thwart the advances. Soon, the SC girls began to change the tides. The excitement came to a crescendo when a shot at the goal bounced out of the tough SF keeper's hands, was kept alive by speedy Jessical Edwards and passed to lefty Jeanne Pastore for the score! The great teamwork continued as the SC banked goal #2. An amazing tackle by Kelsey Walters, constant and steady defensive pressure by Lindsey Sorensen and Olivia Galioto'strong attack kept the SF team from scoring in the first half. Lindsey Sorensen, as the skilled SC keeper in the second half, allowed no goals and was supported by her strong defensive line to contain the Flame's counters. At the final whistle, the score was 2-0. A great display of soccer by both teams!

Explosion Take Second Place in Dixie Moon Classic
The Explosion travelled to San Rafael to take on teams from the North Bay and the Sacramento area. After several good first round games where the Explosion finished top of their group, they took on the Folsom Blaze in the championship game. It was a very hard fought game against probably the best team we have ever faced. The game stayed tight all the way to the final whistle with the Blaze running out winners 1-0.
Explosion are Runners-Up in the Silicon Valley Rotary Cup
The Explosion played four games in the August heat in Santa Clara and came away with the runners-up trophy. The championship was deadlocked at 0-0 after extra time so the game was decided on penalties. Both sides traded goals and saves until the Alpine Rampage won on the 14th penalty kick.
Explosion Wins Hot August Tournament
After three games in very hot temperatures, the San Carlos Explosion advanced to the final of the U12G division, by winning their group.
On Sunday afternoon the Explosion took on the Pleasanton Flash in the championship game. After settling down in their new formation, the team started to dominate the game and created a lot of scoring chances. After a scoreless first half, the Explosion ran out comfortable winners, 3-0.
Congratulations to all the players for a wonderful tournament and our first tournament championship.
Explosion Take 1st in Almaden Fall Classic!
The San Carlos Explosions U12 Girls took the Championship of the Alamaden Fall Classic the weekend of 10/27/02, winning all their games with only 2 goals scored against them all weekend. Everyone on the team contributed their best effort to create an unbeatable force. Highlights of the weekend included the exceptionally placed header into the goal by Christine in game #1, perfectly timed runs by Kristin to gain her a hat trick in game #2 and an incredible corner kick by Olivia in game 3. The Explosion's strong and aggressive defense led by Molly and Kelsey made it difficult for the opponents to get anything started. Both Patty and Lindsey, sharing keeper duties, easily stopped the occasional shots that came their way. Great runs, skilled footwork and precision passing by Jessica, Colleen and Gabriel provided the team the winning edge in all areas of the pitch. Kalyn consistently sheared up the midfield with her aggressive defense and took advantage of ample scoring opportunities. Forwards Jeanne and Gigi were successful in fighting off the opponent's defenders and converting their share of opportunities. The versatility of both Christine and Emily sheered up the wins with their movement of the ball and their ability to anticipate the opponents' moves.
The Championship match was the game of reckoning for the Explosion. A very aggressive and fast Hanford Earthquakes team quickly took the field and was not going to be denied. The San Carlos girls united in an aggressive attack and the attempted multiple efforts to score only to be frustrated with the inability to convert against a strong Earthquake defense and talented keeper. By half-time, the Earthquakes led 1-0. The Explosion, showing great heart and resolve, would not be disavowed. A second half assist by Jeanne to Olivia secured the score of 1:1 despite a field of multiple injuries for the Earthquakes. A late 4th quarter score by Gigi from an assist by Christine, finished the exciting and well-matched game as the Explosion took the championship trophies home.
Thanks to our coaches- Paul, Mary and Kelly.

Thanks to all the girls, parents and coaches for a great first season. The Explosion finished third out of 11 teams, in the competitive Redwood League and captured a couple of fourth place tournament finishes.

Have fun playing indoor soccer and I look forward to seeing everyone out on the practice field in July.....Coach Paul

Explosion Finish Fourth in the Santa Clara Rotary Cup.
After winning two games and drawing one in group play, we finished tied with the Santa Clara Fire. Penalties had to be taken to decide who would advance to the championship game. Unfortunately, this was not to be our day and we headed for the consolation game, only to lose 1-0 to the DeAnza Force.
This was a great weekend for the team. On Saturday afternoon, the team showed a lot of heart by coming back from two goals down to tie the eventual champions and on Sunday morning, having to take maximum points to be in with a chance of progressing to the championship game, we beat a good Valley Sting team 6-0.
We now look forward to the start of our league season on September 9th.
Explosion Wins 4th Place in First Tournament
A great effort by the girls in each of the three group games on Friday night and Saturday led to a second place finish and the right to play in the consolation game on Sunday. A 1-1-1 record was enough to beat out the Avalanche for the second spot. Although tied on points we won the tie breaker by letting in fewer goals (four vs. eight).
The consolation game was a hard fought battle and despite getting behind the girls never quit.
Playing up one age group in our first tournament was a great experience and to take fourth place exceeded any of our expectations. Let's look forward to our first U11 tournament on August 25/26!

Stanford Cup Tournament Results
Congratulations to all the girls that took place in the Stanford 4-a-side tournament on May 20, 2001: China: Gigi, Kalyn, Kristi, Kristin and Olivia.
Australia: Christine, Colleen, Emily, Kelsey and Lindsey.
We ended up with a 0.500 record after collectively playing 12 games. This was a great performance given that this was not only our first tournament as a new team, but also we were playing up one age group against several CYSA Class I teams.
WELL DONE!
