SCP 2013 LOGAN SHERER - East Mecklenburg High School has committed to attend college and play baseball at the UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA CHARLOTTE. Logan will join the 49ers following his career with the the Eagles of East Meck and SC Panthers. Logan joins fellow SCP 2013 players Jon Stires and Jeremy Schellhorn as the 49ers hit the "Motherload".

SCP 2012 JAKE COCHRANE has committed to attend school and play baseball at EMBRY-RIDDLE UNIVERSITY. Jake will join the Eagles following his senior year at North Lincoln High School. Embry-Riddle is located in Daytona Beach, Florida and is a renowned aeronautical school. The Eagles are the NAIA Sun Conference defending champions and have advanced to the NAIA World Series each of the past 4 seasons.

SOUTH CHARLOTTE PANTHERS  SEASON ENDING RECAP

The 2011 season is in the books and a number of team and individual records were set along the way. 

Individual Career Records - Based on statistics with junior/senior teams ( 2years ) only.

SCP 2012 BRODY KOERNER (Clemson) broke the SCP career record for Strike Outs with 222 career Ks; eclipsing the mark held by SCP 2009 Corey Roberts (UNCC) with 154. Brody also broke the career mark for Strike Outs per 7 Innings Pitched with a mark of 11.10/game which beat SCP 2011 Jeffery Springs (Appalachian State) previous record of 9.50/game.

 

SCP 2012 NATHAN HELVEY (College of Charleston) tied the SCP record for career Wins with 17. Nathan tied SCP 2009 Corey Roberts and SCP 2010 Jesse Brewer.

 

SCP 2012 JACKSON CAMPANA (Clemson) set the all time SCP Home Run mark with 14 for his career. Jackson broke the mark last season and extended it this year in spite of playing a limited schedule due to injury.

 

SCP 2012 KYLE WHITMAN (Clemson) established himself as one of the all time top SCP hitters ending his career with a  Batting Average of .400 which is second only to SCP 2007 Whit Merrifield's (USC/KC Royals) .410 average; second in Total Hits (133) to Whit's 163 total and second in RBI's (79) to SCP 2010 Brian Holberton (UNC) (86).

 

SCP 2012 JOHN MANGUM (NC State) broke the career mark for Catchers Caught Stealing with a 2 year total of 43 Caught Stealing on 70 Attempts for a .614 CS Average which beat out SCP Brian Holberton 31 - 60  .533.

 

After digging through past statistics it has been verified that SCP 2012 PRESTON TILLER (Appalachian State) has earned the distinction of holding the SCP career record for Hit By Pitch. Preston added a single season record 15 this season breaking his single season record set last year of 14 for a career total of 29. The 29 HBPs eclipses the mark of 16 held by SCP 2008 Tyler Vogler. The HBPs helped put Preston in the Top 10 All Time for career On Base Average with a two year mark of .445.

 

Individual Single Season Records

A number of SCP single season individual records were set in the 2011 season. Leading the way was SCP 2013 KIRK MORGAN (East Carolina) who set new benchmarks for: Games Played  (79) - Tying SCP 2010 Brian Holberton.  Up To Bat (268) - Beating SCP 2007 Whit Merrifield 239. At Bats (221) - Beating SCP Whit Merrifield (207) and Innings Played (533) - Beating Brian Holberton (479).  Kirk tied the single season RBI mark held by SCP 2011 Hayden Hendry (Citadel) with 49 and also eclipsed the Saves record on the mound with 8 overtaking SCP 2006 Eric Sommerville's (Francis Marion) previous record of 5.

 

SCP 2013 PHILIP PERRY tied the single season Wins record of 12; set last year by SCP 2012 Nathan Helvey (College of Charleston).

SCP 2012 TRENT THORNTON (UNC) set a new single season mark for pitchers for Win % by going 11-0  1.000 which broke the previous mark of 8-0 1.000 held by SCP 2009 Corbin Shive (UNCC).

 

SCP 2013 NICK SALISBURY set a new single season record for defensive Double Plays with a total of 29 which broke the mark of 25 held by SCP 2009 C.A. Clayton. Nick also broke the season record for Base on Balls at bat with a total of 41; breaking the mark set by SCP 2007 Skip Hutchins with 39.

 

SCP 2013 BRETT MILLEMAN broke the record for Catchers Fielding %. Brett did not commit an error in 208 innings at catcher for a 1.000 FA.  He broke the record held by SCP 2007 Kolby Epley (COC) of .996; set in 2005.

The SCP 2012 completed their season with a 3-1 record at the Perfect Game World Championships in Jupiter, Florida. The Cat pitchers were dominant and the defense played well in giving up only 3 runs in four games of pool play which was the second least in the tournament. The offense never got untracked for the Panthers and in the team's lone loss to the Mizuno Puerto Ricans we were no hit.

Winning pitcher Ty Buttrey hit 94 on the radar guns and pitched 5 innings of 1 hit baseball to get the Panthers off to a fast start with a 5-1 victory. Ty and catcher Andrew MacLatchie were featured on the PG video of day 2 morning action listed on the PG web site. MIF Kirk Morgan got the team off to a fast start with a first pitch of the game double and subsequent run scored.

Winning Pitcher: Ty Buttrey (8-1)  5IP; 1H; 3K; 0R. Save: Michael Herbert (5) 2IP; 2H; 2K; 1R.

Leading Hitters: Martin Koon 2-3 (RBI). Kirk Morgan 1-3 (2B). Ty Buttrey 1-3 (RS).

Hitting 91 on the PG radar guns Trent Thornton shut out the pre tournament pool favorite Royals Scout Team with a complete game victory. He gave up 2 hits while striking out 9 and walking 0. With the victory Trent took his season record to 11-0 which set an SCP single season record for number of wins without a loss. 1B Kyle Whitman led off the third with a single and came around to score the only run needed on a Colby Barnette RBI single. 

Winning Pitcher: Trent Thornton (11-0)  7IP; 2H; 9K; 0R.

Leading Hitters: Kirk Morgan 1-2. Kyle Whitman 1-3. Colby Barnette 1-3 (RBI).

The Panthers were no hit for the first time in SCP history by the Pool A winners Mizuno Puerto Rico. Cat starting pitcher Brody Koerner matched the Mizuno arms through the fourth when they capitalized on an infield single; base on balls and the only hard hit of the game to take a 2-0 lead which would hold up for the victory. Koerner struck out 8 for a career total of 222 Ks; which broke the all time SCP career record. Brad Stone finished the game for the Panthers with 2 innings of no hit ball while hitting 88 on the PG radar guns.

Cameron Tekker; Brian Donovan and Jake Cochrane combined for a shut out to lead the Panthers to a 3-1 pool record and a win in the final SCP 2012 game. SCP 2013 Kirk Morgan went 2-2 with 4 stolen bases to help lead the offense and SCP 2014 Ryder Ryan drove in 3 Panther runs.

The SCP 2012 team finished the season 45-17-4 and a two year Panther record of 93-32-9.

SCP  2013 - ELITE 8

After sweeping pool play with a 3-0 record the SCP 2013s entered championship play as the tournaments #8 seed out of 144 teams. The Junior Cats advanced to the round of eight with victories over the Houston Heat and the East Cobb Astros before losing in a hard fought final 8 to the East Cobb Braves. The Panthers will wrap up their season next weekend in Raleigh at North Carolina State having finished in the top 8 in the three major national tournaments they competed in this season; USA Nationals (3rd); Perfect Game 16U (Final 8) and Perfect Game Underclass (Final 8) in addition to winning the USA 16U Cup Championship.

Bailey Ober pitched a complete game One Hitter to lead the Panthers to a round of 16 vicory over the East Cobb Astros. Thomas Nantz  drilled a single in the Cats two run 3rd to give the team all the runs they would need.

SCP  2014 - SWEET 16

The Rookie SC Panthers proved they will be a factor in years to come advancing to the championship rounds after sweeping their pool play games as the number 7 seed (one ahead of their sister 13 team) in the 144 team field.

Starting pitcher Logan Beehler had to leave the game early due to a line up situation having given up 0 runs. Nick Contafio completed the shut out with 5 innings of scoreless relief to pick up the win. Tommy DeJuneas drove in all 3 Panther runs.

Doug Norman (4-0) picked up his fourth Panther win with a dominating outing on the mound. Grant Wentzel earned his 3rd Save of the season to close out the game. Logan Beehler and Ryder Ryan each collected 2 hits to lead the offense.

Ryan Ross pitched an outstanding game over the Tri State Arsenal with 6 innings of shut out work. Ryder Ryan closed the game in the seventh for the second Panther shut out in pool play. The Panthers scored the only run they needed when Tommy DeJuneas stole third and scored on an error.

Captain Morgan or Captain Kirk - They Both Work!

SCP 2013 KIRK MORGAN (East Carolina) has been named "CAPTAIN" of the South Charlotte Panthers 2013 team. Kirk represents the first player ever selected as a Team Captain in the SCP organization. Coach Hutchins announced this selection Labor Day weekend;  "Kirk has demonstrated outstanding leadership on and off the field over the past 50 plus games. Although we have had many outstanding team leaders in the past 14 years; Kirk has earned this recognition; demonstrating an unselfish team first attitude and going 100% every game for himself and his team. Congratulations to Kirk and his parents Mary Beth and Scott for this honor.

The South Charlotte Panthers 2013 team won the USA Baseball 2011 16U Cup in Cary, NC this weekend! The Panthers went 5-0 during the tournament, pitched three shutouts, and outscored their opponents 42-9. You can read more on the USA Baseball Website.

NORTH CAROLINA FINALS

Behind ace SCP 2011 JEFFERY SPRINGS the SOUTH POINT RED RAIDERS won the 2011 North Carolina State 3A Championships 2-1 in a best of three versus NE Guilford High School. Springs won game 1 with a complete game victory on the mound to take his season record to 11-0. In game 2 the Red Raiders lost a last inning 5 run lead to take the finals to a game 3 match up. SCP 2013 ANDREW LOCKLEAR took the mound and pitched a complete game for the win and the championship. He gave up 5 hits while striking out 5 and allowed no base on balls to lead the Red Raiders to the Championship. Andrew also had 2 hits in the deciding game. SPRINGS earned MOST VALUABLE PLAYER honors for his game 1 victory and also led the Red Raiders at the plate going 7 for 11 with 3 doubles.
