HUNTER MAY SIGNS WITH MARSHAL! 2010 SCP HUNTER MAY; Hopewell High School has signed to attend school and play baseball for the Thundering Herd at MARSHAL UNIVERSITY. He will join the Herd following his senior season at Hopewell High. Hunter joins fellow 2010 Panthers Ryan Butler and Kyle Kessler; look for this threesome to be the weekend rotation in the years to come. All three Panthers will be welcomed to the West Virginia mountains by 2008 SCP Eric Semeniuk. Congratulations to Hunter and his parents Jeff and Carole. Sunday, January 24 GREATER CHARLOTTE HOT STOVE BANQUET Hosted by the South Charlotte Sports Report and Carolina Baseball Center; THE GREATER CHARLOTTE HOT STOVE LEAGUE held their annual banquet January 23 at CBC. SCP BRIAN HOLBERTON was selected as the Greater Charlotte "Player of the Year". Brian joins the two previous winners and SCP players Tyler Tewell and Richie Shaffer for this honor. SCP RYAN BUTLER was selected as the Greater Charlotte "Pitcher of the Year". CHARLOTTE CHRISTIAN was selected as the Greater Charlotte "Team of the Year". SCP players on the Charlotte Christian team were LUKE BARD; TY LINTON; JAKE WATSON and TREY LANEY. SCP player finalist for the annual awards included: TY LINTON for Player of the Year. TREVOR HOVIS for Comeback Player of the Year. JOSH GREENE; ALEX TOMASOVICH and JESSE BREWER for York County Player of the Year. Ardrey Kell High School was a finalist for the team of the year; SCP players represented were ALEX WOOD; RYAN BUTLER; LOGAN RATLEDGE; BRETT LANG; ALEX LEACH and PRESTON TILLER. Monday, November 2 JOSH GREENE SIGNS WITH USC SUMTER 2010 JOSH GREENE has signed to attend school and play baseball at the University of South Carolina Sumter in Sumter, SC. Josh will join the Fire Ants following his senior year at York High School. Josh currently holds the SCP stolen base record with 50 set in 2008. He led the 2010 team in the 2009 season with a .441 batting average and stole a team leading 13 bases. Congratulations to Josh and his family.

Monday, October 19 PERFECT GAME WORLD WOOD BAT WORLDS JUPITER The 2010 South Charlotte Panthers traveled to Jupiter, Florida for the 11th annual Perfect Game World Wood Bat World Championships held at the Roger Dean Complex; home of the St. Louis Cardinal and Florida Marlins. Game 1 SC PANTHERS 1...............................................1.....4.....4 PG East Cobb Orange 6..............................6.....4.....0 Losing Pitcher: Kurt Semeniuk (3-3) 2IP; 2H; 5R; 4K; 5BB. The Panthers showed early nerves in allowing 4 runs in the first two innings off of base on balls; hit by pitches and errors to put themselves in a 0-4 hole versus the talented East Cobb Orange team. Relief pitchers Kyle Kessler and Taylor Reeves slowed down the scoring but the Panther offense could only muster one run from a Aaron Attaway single and a RBI single from Brian Holberton. Game 2 SC PANTHERS 3................................................3.....7.....2 Mizuno Puerto Rico 1.........................................1.....6.....1 Winning Pitcher: Jesse Brewer (8-3) 7IP; 1R; 6H; 7K; 3BB. The Panthers got themselves back in the thick of the pool race with a 3-1 victory over pool favorite Puerto Rico. Jesse Brewer pitched a complete game 6 hitter; giving up one run in the seventh inning. Jesse struck out 7. Brian Holberton hit a giant two run home run over the right center fence to stake the Panthers to a 2-0 lead in the 3rd. The Cats tacked on an insurance run in the fourth on back to back doubles from Michael Dunn and Tyler Freeze. Game 3 SC PANTHERS 5...................................................5.....7.....3 Chet Lemons Juice 7.............................................7.....8.....2 Losing Pitcher: Hunter May (2-1) 1.66IP; 5R; 5H; 1K; 3BB. The Cats jumped out to a 4-1 lead with a big second inning on hits by Alex Tomasovich; Brian Holberton and Eric Brenk. The lead did not last long as we failed to hold the lead off of walks and errors. The Panthers scratched back to with in 2 on a Brian Holberton home run but failed to catch up. Josh Bowers stopped the bleeding with a solid 4 innings of work giving up 1 earned run while striking out 3. Game 4 SC PANTHERS 1................................................1.....2.....0 Cangelosi Baseball 1.....................................1.....5.....1 The Cats completed pool play with a hard earned 1-1 tie versus Cangelosi Baseball. Facing 7 different pitchers with 5 clocked over 90mph the Panthers managed 2 hits yet a huge one was a two out double by Kurt Semeniuk to tie the game in the sixth. Starter Ryan Butler pitched a great game; topping at 88; holding the strong Illini team to 4 hits while striking out 4 in 5 and two thirds inning of work. Patrick McMahon matched up against the Cangelosi top of the line up and Kyle Kessler got the last out with the bases loaded when he got the Illini hitter to hit a sinking liner to right that Panther second baseman Alex Tomasovich made a diving grab.
Monday, October 12 PERFECT GAME WORLD WOOD BAT NATIONAL UNDERCLASS The 2011 South Charlotte Panthers competed in the 98 team Perfect Game WWBA National Underclass Championships in Fort Myers, Florida the weekend of October 8. POOL PLAY GAME 1 SC PANTHERS 0.........................................0.....6.....0 Collegiate Athletics 0......................................0.....1.....0 Nick Silva pitched a complete game one hit shut out to lead the Panthers to a game one tie versus Collegiate Baseball from Georgia. Nick struck out 3 in the game. The Panthers managed 6 hits but failed to score for the first time all season. Hayden Hendry led the offense with two hits including a triple and Brett Lang finished the game 2-3. GAME 2 SC PANTHERS 9..........................................9......11.....0 Black and Gold 5...............................................5......10.....0 The Panthers came back from 0-2 and 5-3 deficits to take a 9-5 victory in game two over a scrappy Black and Gold team from Florida. Starting pitcher Chip Helton pitched 4.66 innings before giving way to Lou Trosch. Lou slammed the door on a rally and struck out 4 in 2.33 innings earning the victory. The Panthers collected 3 runs in the fourth on a 2RBI double from Hayden Hendry and then with two outs in the sixth and down 5-3 the Cats strung together 6 straight hits to pull even and away 9-5. Blaine Lewis; RBI double and Michael Herbert 2RBI triple had back to back pinch hits to lead the way to the come back win. David Daniels came out of a wood bat slump to collect 2 hits in 3 at bats; scoring 2 runs in the win. Logan Ratlege and and Brett Lang each had RBI doubles. GAME 3 SC PANTHERS 13...........................................13.....12.....0 Houston Banditos 1..............................................1......2.....0 Jeffery Springs pitched a complete game 2 hitter and the Panthers advance to the Championship Round of 32 teams with a pool win. David Daniels led the offense with a 4 hit game including 2 doubles and 3 runs scored. Andres Sanchez had two doubles and Logan Ratledge was 2 for 3 with a double. Elliott Fowler was 1 for 1 with 2 RBIs and Blaine Lewis had a 3 RBI triple. CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND of 32 SC PANTHERS 5..................................................5.....8.....4 All Star Baseball Academy 2................................2.....5.....1 Jake Fincher; David Daniels and Michael Herbert all collected two hits each to lead the Panthers to a Round of 32 victory over All Star Baseball. Starting pitcher Tyler McCarthy gave way to Lou Trosch in the 3rd and Lou earned his second win of the weekend with 4.66 innings of scoreless relief. Lou struck out 8 to close out the team from Pennsylvania. CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND of 16 SC PANTHERS 5...................................................5.....12......2 Midland Braves 8...................................................8.....8.....1 The Cats jumped out to a 5-0 lead after three innings and behind a strong pitching performance from starter Peter Hendel held the lead through four. The Braves scraped together 3 runs in the fifth to cut the lead to 5-3. In the sixth the Panther fielding took a break with the Cats commiting three errors which led to the Braves tying the game 5-5. In an eighth inning tie breaker the Braves scored three and the Panthers were unable to answer. The loss eliminated the Cats who finished the event 3-1-1.
Leading hitters for the event were Blaine Lewis who finished 7 for 13 with 3 doubles; a triple and 5 RBIs. David Daniels 8 for 17 with 3 doubles and at one point 6 hits in a row. Michael Herbert 4 for 7 with a double; a triple and 3 RBIs. Hayden Hendry 6 for 16 with a double a triple and 4 RBIs. Lou Trosch earned two wins in the event with a total of 7 innings pitched; giving up 4 hits while striking out 12 hitters! Nick Silva had a complete game one hit shut out and Jeffery Springs had a 2 hit complete game with 7 strike outs in 4 innings. Peter Hendel shut down a prospect laden Midland line up with 5 solid innings; giving up 5 hits and striking out 3. MAT BATTS has signed to attend school and play baseball for WESTERN CAROLINA UNIVERSITY next season. Mat joins the Catamounts following his prep career at Mt. Tabor High School where he was the CPC Conference Player of the Year and a three time all conference selection. Mat likely holds the unofficial record for most starts and victories in Perfect Game World Wood Bat events having attended tournaments with the Panthers since he was 15 and pitching in as many as three events in a season a couple of times. I do know Mat has never lost a Panther game in Atlanta. Mat will be competing for the SCP 2009 team this week in yet one more PG WWBA event as they begin play next week. SCP 2006 NICK FOGLEMAN; PFIEFFER COLLEGE has been voted the Conference Carolina 2009 "PITCHER OF THE YEAR" in addition to being a CC selection to the ALL CONFERENCE FIRST TEAM. Nick finished the regular season with a 9-1 record and has a 1.85 earned run average. He has pitched 77 innings and has 80 strike outs to his record. SCP 2007 COREY NORMAN; SURRY CC has been awarded the 2009 Coaches Award. Corey has accepted a scholarship to continue his education and baseball career at CATAWBA COLLEGE next year. SCP 2007 PRESTON SHUEY; FRANCIS MARION was voted to the Peach Belt Conference All Tournament Team. Francis Marion swept the tournament for their first Peach Belt Tournament Championship. The win assures the nationally ranked Patriots a spot in the upcoming NCAA Division II play offs. SCP 2006 ERIK SOMMERVILLE is also a member of the Patriots and earned the win on the mound in their semi final win over UNCP. Shuey helped lead the Patriots to their fiftenth straight victory. In the final game his offensive box score did not tell the whole story. In a close 4-2 game Preston accounted for two of the Patriot runs; the first being a give it up grounder to second for an RBI and the second a hustle play where the right fielder dropped a deep fly; Preston hustling all the way rounded second and the throw to third was wild and he came around to score on a two error play.
GREATER CHARLOTTE HOT STOVE AWARDS
The Greater Charlotte Hot Stove League in conjunction with Carolina Baseball Center and the South Charlotte Sports Report held their second annual Greater Charlotte Baseball Awards Banquet at CBC. TYLER TEWELL was awarded the Kelley Sports Greater Charlotte High School Baseball Player of the Year. Other Panther finalist were COREY ROBERTS and LUKE BARD. SETH NEELY was awarded the York County High School Player of the Year. Another Panther finalist was TYLER MILLER. Ardery Kell High School was awarded the Greater Charlotte Baseball Team of the Year. Panther members of the AK program are ALEX WOOD; LOGAN RATLEDGE and RYAN BUTLER. JOSEPH SHEALY was a finalist for the Scholar Athlete of the Year. JACKSON CAMPANA was a finalist for the Greater Charlotte Youth Baseball Player of the Year. Congratulations to all the SCP players; finalist and WINNERS.
SPENCER SHUEY SIGNS WITH CLEMSON SPENCER SHUEY 2009 South Meck High School signed his national letter of intent to play football and attend school at CLEMSON UNIVERSITY next fall. Spencer had an outstanding senior season where he helped lead the South Meck Sabres to a deep play off run. Spencer was chosen this year for the exclusive NC/SC Shrine Bowl where he earned MVP honors in the game. He will take to the baseball field for his senior season this spring to help lead the Sabres in the SW4A conference. Congratulations to Spencer; his parents Mark and Karen; brother Preston an SCP alumni now playing baseball at Francis Marion and sister Stefani who attends college at Wingate where she is a member of the volleyball team.
BRAD COLLINS COMMITS TO GARDNER WEBB BRAD COLLINS has committed to attend school and play baseball at GARDNER WEBB UNIVERSITY. Before joining the Bulldogs; Brad will help lead the Weddington Warriors this spring in their quest for a SW4A title. JOSEPH SHEALY EARNS EAGLE SCOUT 2009 SCP Joseph Shealy recently completed the requirements and became an Eagle Scout of America. Joseph is a senior year at South Mecklenburg High School in Charlotte, NC. and will be on the baseball diamond this spring for the Sabres. Joseph becomes the second Panther to make Eagle Scout joining Byron McKoy in the class of 2007. Congratulations to Joseph and his parents, Darrell and Robin on this highest of honors. The UNC Charlotte Forty Niners struck GOLD on August 28th when they received committments from two SC Panthers who will look to help lead the prospecting 49ers to "mother load" riches beginning in 2010. 2009 SC Panther CORBIN SHIVE committed to attend school and play baseball for the Forty Niners following his senior season at East Rowan High School where he will help lead the Mustangs in their conference championship defense and improve on their NC State 3A Championship Runner Up finish in 2008. Congratulations to Corbin and his dad Brent on this exciting commit.

ALEX WOOD COMMITS TO GEORGIA 2009 SC Panther ALEX WOOD committed to the University of Georgia where he will play baseball for the Bulldogs. Congratulations to Alex his parents Richard and Carol and sister Stephanie. Alex is a member of the Ardrey Kell HS Knights baseball team and will help lead them in their quest for a SW4A Conference title and beyond before joining the SC Panthers in their 2008 summer and fall schedule.
RICHIE SHAFFER NAMED AFLAC ALL AMERICAN RICHIE SHAFFER HAS BEEN NAMED AN AFLAC ALL AMERICAN FOR 2008. Richie Shaffer competed with 38 select rising high school seniors in the Aflac All American Game at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles on Saturday; August 9. In the game televised on FOX SPORTS; Richie and the East squad came back in the bottom of the ninth down 0-2 and scored 3 runs then held on for a victory. Richie made the defensive play of the game with a diving catch of a Texas League fly ball. At the plate he went 0 for 2 with 2 walks and scored the game winning run. CONGRATULATIONS to Richie and his family. |
